Question on Weight Distribution and Sway Control On A 2013 Ford Edge

Can you recommend several weight distribution/anti-sway control systems for my situation? My vehicle is a 2013 Ford Edge. I have a 12foot x 6foot tandem axle cargo trailer that Id like to pull. My concern is the available clearance to the ground for a W/D control system. I think a trunnion type system will be too low. The trailer frame clearance on level ground is 12 the bottom of the tow A-frame tow bar is 13. The Edge has 14inch clearance from the top of the 2 receiver to the ground measured without the trailer attached. My tongue weight without a load is 150 lbs. My tongue weight with a load will be around 350 to 400 lbs. The tow bar frame length measured from the cargo box to the end of the coupler is about 52. Maximum tow weight is 3,500 lbs. The Andersen No-Sway W/D system looked the best but they dont recommend their product for my coupler - an Atwood which is one of these Atwood models - 88007, 88010, 88555 or 88600 coupler. Thank you in advance for any input you may provide.

Since you are dealing with a ground clearance issue with your tow vehicle and trailer, your best bet is to look into a short weight distribution shank like the Blue Ox shank, # BXW4017. This will provide the most ground clearance possible for your application. In addition to this shank, I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution system. There is no weight distribution system that will provide the necessary drop and ground clearance that you will need, but these two components will get you as close as possible.

When choosing a weight distribution system, the most important factor is total tongue weight. To calculate total tongue weight, you also need to add any weight you might load in the rear of your Ford Edge behind the rear axle to the loaded tongue weight of the trailer. You should also make sure that the trailer hitch on your vehicle is rated for weight distribution. There should be a sticker or a tag on the hitch that lists a weight carrying capacity and a weight distribution capacity. If you cannot use weight distribution capacity, Then I do not recommend using one of these systems and instead adding suspension enhancement to your Edge.

If you can use weight distribution, the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37061ET is my recommendation for your application. The tongue weight is rated 200-600 lbs for the weight distribution system. This should give you enough leeway for any cargo you may want to load in the rear of your Ford Edge. Also, the straight spring bar design that run horizontal to the trailer A-frame will give you better clearance than the lower hanging round bars on other models. The Equal-i-zer uses a 4 point sway control that helps limit side to side trailer sway. This product comes with a 2 inch chrome ball and is made in the USA.The Equal-i-zer # EQ37061ET does not come with a hitch shank.

I attached videos Equal-i-zer hitch and some help articles that might answer any questions you may have on trailer and towing issues.

If you cannot use weight distribution, then I recommend adding suspension enhancement such as the Air Lift 1000 Air Helper Springs # AL60819.
