Can Draw-Tite Base Plates Be Moved From a 2006 Saturn Ion to a 1996 Geo Tracker

Published 10/12/2010

Question:

I currently tow a 2006 Saturn ION behind my motorhome. The towbar is a Drawtite. Can I remove the brackets from the ION and put it on a 1996 GEO Tracker that has the holes for a baseplate? Thanks for your help.

I know that Draw-Tite used to offer a car-mounted tow bar, which used base plates that were bolted directly to the vehicle. Is this the tow bar style you have? If so, this tow bar uses universal brackets, so you would be able to move the brackets from one vehicle to another. Our part # 63180 is basically the new version of this tow bar. Be aware that the # 63180 tow bar is rated for towing speeds up to 45 MPH only.

I would recommend inspecting the base plates and making sure they are still in solid working order.

If you do want to use the Roadmaster # 118-8 base plate kit on your 1996 Geo Tracker, you could do this but you would need an adapter, part # RM-025.

To wire the Tracker for towing, you would need wiring kit # 38955. Your tracker should have separate turn signal and tail lights, so the # 38955 kit would utilize your main red light for brake, turn signal, and tail light functions. If you want the amber turn signal lights to function, you would also need tail light converter # 118158 and two additional diodes, part # RM-792.

A magnetic light kit, # RM-2120, would be an easy alternative if your motor home is already wired with a 4-Way flat plug.

I have included some links to additional information that should be helpful for you.
