Trailer Hitch and Motorcycle Carrier for the Back of a Travel Trailer

Updated 04/06/2016 | Published 04/03/2016

Question:

I currently have a pop up camper with a flat bed on the front for carrying my motorcycle. Im looking to trade my pop up in on a travel trailer. Looking at a 2014 Jayco Jay Feather 16 XRB. Before I make the purchase I was wondering if this hitch would support a hitch mounted motorcycle carrier? I would be carrying either a Suzuki DR650 that weighs about 325 lbs or a honda ruckus that weighs just under 200 lbs.

Curt RV frame mount hitch # 13703 has a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds. So the Honda Ruckus would be fine but the Suzuki would be too heavy since you also have to factor in the weight of a carrier.

With this hitch Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or cargo carrier) per their warranty requirements.

For a hitch with a higher capacity that does not require the strap I recommend # C13702. It has a 500 pound tongue weight capacity. then you would need a carrier that is rated for use at the back of an RV or trailer. We have one option for this, # UF48-979033. It has a maximum capacity of 500 pounds and weighs about 50 pounds.

The combined weight of the motorcycle and carrier cannot exceed the tongue weight capacity of the hitch used.
