Expert Reply:
The Curt trailer hitch that fits your 2001 Mitsubishi Galant, # C11248, is meant to be used with ball mount # C45521 which can be used in the rise position (with the ball platform higher than the receiver opening). In this position it provides a 2-5/8 inch rise measured from the top of the receiver opening to the top of the ball platform.
With Class I hitches like this you are supposed to use the ball mount specified by the hitch manufacturer or it can void the hitch warranty.
For 1-7/8 inch ball that fits the above ball mount I recommend # A-80. And for a 2 inch I recommend # A-82.
