Replacing Trailer Tires on Cargo Trailer for 3,000 Mile Trip

Question:

I am looking at a luggage/cargo trailer that has a torsion axle and snowmobile size 8inch wheels. There should be enough room to upgrade the tire/wheel to a 20.5x8-10. My question is will either the 8in or 10in make a 3000 mile round trip without cooking the wheel bearings?

Either size wheel and tire will work well for you on your trip. Using a 10 inch wheel and tire can offer higher weight capacities, but your carrying weight capacity will still be limited by the lowest component in the system.

When thinking about using a larger size tire, it is important to think about tire clearance. It is best to maintain at least 3 inches of clearance between the trailer tire and the fender.

One of our most popular tire and wheel combos in the size you referenced is the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10 Inch White Wheel # AM3H370. This tire offers a 1,100 pound max load at 50 psi, a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern, and has an inflated outer diameter of 20.5 inches. With a section width of 8.3 inches, the tire will offer plenty of contact with the road.

To help the life of a trailer tire, you will want to ensure that the tire is inflated to the proper psi rating listed on the tire and is not overloaded, as well as abiding by the speed rating for the tire. Check the tire's sidewall for its speed rating.

To help the trailer's bearings, you can make sure the trailer is properly maintained and lubricated before taking off on your trip.
