Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Wheel/Tire Combo for 1995 Jayco Pop-Up Camper
The modern tire size for the 20.5 x 8.0-10 tire is 205/65-10. The exact wheel and tire combo you need will depend on the wheel bolt pattern used by your pop-up (4 lug on 4 inch bolt circle, 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt circle or 5 lug on 5-1/2 inch bolt circle) as well as the load rating needed. You'll want to choose a two wheel/tires with a combined between the two load rating greater than the GVWR of the pop-up. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating represents the maximum the pop-up can weigh...

  • Rim and Tire Recommendation to Replace a 20.5x8x10 Tire
For the 20.5x8x10, the new size is a 205/65-10 like what is on the tire and rim combo # AM3H430 that you referenced. If you are looking for a wheel and tire combo in this size and yours has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern hub this would work well for you. If you are unsure what your wheel bolt pattern is check out the FAQ article I attached. If all you need is a tire in that size you would want the part # AM1HP56. If you do need a rim and tire and instead have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern...

For your 20.5 x 8.0-10 tire and wheel, I recommend the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM3H390 or the 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern # AM3H370. We also have galvanized wheel options # AM3H380 and # AM3H400. I've attached video reviews of each to assist. • Can I Upgrade from a 4.80x8b Tire to a 205/65-10 Tire?
The answer to your question depends on your current lug pattern and clearance between your fenders and tires. When your trailer is loaded to it's full capacity, there should be a minimum clearance of 3 inches between the top of your tire and the underside of your fender. This will give you adequate clearance for potholes and bumps. There should also be a minimum of an inch of clearance from the side wall of the tire to the trailer frame. You will not be able to use the same wheels and the...

  • Which Tire and Wheel Combos are Recommended for Trailer Hub # AKIHUB-440-2-1K
Trailer hub assembly # AKIHUB-440-2-1K is good for 8 to 12 inch wheels with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. The hub is designed for 2,000 pound axles so to match that capacity and if you want a wide tire you can use a 205/65-10, load range C, # AM3H370. This tire and wheel combo will be 8.3 inches wide and 20-1/2 inches tall. If you wanted to go with a 12 inch tire you can use tire and wheel combo # AM30780. • Correct Size Spare Wheel/Tire for 20.5x8-10 Trailer Tires
The best match we have for a 20.5x8-10 tire is a 205/65-10 which is just slightly larger but will still work just fine as a spare. I recommend using the part # AM3H390 for 5 lug or the part # AM3H370 for 4-lug which are both great cost effective options.

  • Is The Hub Pilot Size Important When Using Wheels With Lug Bolts
Thank you for the compliment. Yes, the pilot hole size is very important when the trailer uses lug bolts. That means the wheel is a hub centric wheel instead of a lug centric wheel. The difference is the wheel that is hub centric will center off the pilot hole size and a lug centric wheel will center off of the studs that are on the hub. You are correct the 12 inch wheels do not have the 2.5 inch pilot diameter. The 10 inch wheels with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern are the correct wheel you...

  • Which Load Range Tire for Utility Trailer Carrying 2 ATVs
The load range of tire you need will depend on the weight of your empty trailer. Two load range C wheel/tires like # AM3H370 would have a 2200 lb combined capacity per axle. Two load range D, such as the # AM3H410 you had looked at would have a combined capacity of 2640 lbs. The weight of the load plus the trailer should not exceed the tire's load capacity. In order to achieve their full capacity, the tires should be fully inflated to the air pressure listed on the tire sidewall. If...

  • Trailer Tires to Replace 20.5x8x10 Tires on a Pontoon Boat Trailer
The problem you are experiencing could be due to low tongue weight and not the tires. Boat trailers generally have lower tongue weight than other trailers. Making sure the trailer is towed level and with adequate tongue weight (10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight) could help a lot. It could also be that something is wrong with the suspension but if the trailer is new that is unlikely. If you have any suspicions that there could be a suspension issue then I would have a shop that...

  • Changing from 5.70-8 Tires to 10 Inch Tires on a Trailer
As long as you have room in your wheel well for a larger tire and wheel, the only other factors that you will need to consider are the bolt pattern and weight capacity of the new tires. For example, the Kenda 205/65-10 Tire and Wheel Combo, # AM3H370, has a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern and a maximum load rating of 1,100 lbs at 50 psi. A 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern is the most common bolt pattern for 8 and 10 inch wheels, so this combo should work as long as the load rating of two wheel/tire combos...

The closest tire available to a 20x8x10 is a 205/65-10 tire, which measures 20-1/2" tall and 8.3" wide; you're likely fine but want to measure to ensure you have at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail.
