Troubleshooting Wiring on a 2015 Nissan NV3500 with Factory Tow Package
Updated 12/07/2015 | Published 12/06/2015 >
Question:
Hello, I have a 2015 Nissan NV3500 w/ the tow package. Today I tried towing my 5x10 utility trailer using a 7-pin to 4-pin plug in adapter. Only the drivers side lighting worked. To use a 4-pin for my utility trailer I will need a converter? With the converter installed will this affect the operation of the factory 7-pin connector when I tow my camper? Thank you for your time.

I can help you troubleshoot your issue on your 2015 Nissan NV3500.
First let me answer your question about the use of a converter. You will not need the use of a converter for the utility trailer, because the 7-way on the vehicle is already converted for use with all trailers.
The first thing I would do is use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the functions on the 7-way and compare them to the 7-way diagram I've linked right here for your convenience. If all the functions are the same as this, then what you will do next is plug in your 7 to 4 pin adapter and again test the functions coming out of that to be sure they are correct.
If all those work correctly then it would sound like you have a grounding issue on the trailer. You will want to make sure that all the grounds are mounted on a clean metal surface or all run back to the main ground on the trailer.
I would be more than happy to continue to help you troubleshoot this if you continue to have issues.
