Tire Chain Recommendation for a Spinter Van with 265/70-17 Tires

Published 11/25/2015

Question:

Hello, I have noticed a lot of diamond style snow chains are not rated for E-load tires, or in other words, not designed for heavier vehicles. I have a Sprinter van with 265/70/17 and I would like to run the smoothest running snow chain offered. I want to be prepared for snow and ice and also want the least amount of rattling while on the road. What chain might you recommend that can also handle a 8000 pound vehicle? I had the standard chains that rattled the van a lot, I think it loosed every bolt in by rig is there a better option? Thanks.

Snow tire chains fit tires by physical dimension and disregard the load rating of the tire.

Vehicles with chains must only drive to the maximum speed limit as recommended by the auto and chain manufacturers, which is usually around 35mph. Even at that slow speed it will be a rough ride. The only way to get a less rough ride is to use thinner chains/cables, but then you have less traction.

For you tire sized 265/70-17 you can use the Pewag # PWE2228SC chains with all square links for an aggressive bite into the snow. The feature alloy chains that will last longer than others.

If you only plan to use chains only occasionally, the Titan Chain # TC2028 cable chains are good choice, but they won't have nearly the grip of the Pewag's.
