Can I secure a kayak using this basket or is there an additional attachment I need to purchase?

You can secure a kayak using this basket but you will need to make sure it stays put on the rack by using the Rhino-Rack Cam Buckle Cinch Straps # RTD3 and Thule Quick Draw Tie-Down Ropes w/ Ratchets and Strap Loops # TH855XT to secure it to your vehicle.
If your concerned about scratching your Kayak I recommend the Rightline Gear Kit # RL100K10 that includes foam pads to protect your kayak and roof basket.
