Will a Curt Folding Cargo Carrier Clear the Rear Bumper of a 2015 GMC Terrain

Updated 09/17/2015 | Published 09/16/2015

Question:

I am planning to purchase a Curt Receiver #13591 for a 2015 GMC Terrain. And wanted to mate a Curt 18109 carrier with the receiver. The reason I am going with a 2inch receiver is that my other vehicles have 2inch receivers and hopefully will be able to use the carrier. My two concerns is clearance when the carrier is down and accessing the back hatch. As well as being able to fold the carrier up and not touching the vehicle. I have viewed the receiver installation video for the Terrain and really appreciate it. Any assistance would be appreciated.

On your 2015 GMC Terrain with Curt trailer hitch # 13591 installed it will measure approximately 3-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole out to clear the rear bumper. On Curt cargo carrier # C18109 when folded up it measures 5 inches to the nearest part of the carrier so it will clear the rear of the vehicle by 1-3/4 inches.

The distance from the trailer hitch receiver to the bottom of the rear hatch on the Terrain is fairly far. The carrier when folded down and empty would not be an issue. It is also unlikely that items on the carrier would get in the way but that depends on how high the cargo is.

What you will want to look at is the exhaust. The carrier has a straight shank so the exhausts will exit at about the same level and potentially right into the carrier. The carrier is 60 inches wide so if the distance between the exhaust tips are wider than that it would not be an issue.

I recommend going with Curt cargo carrier # C18151. It has more clearance, 9 inches when folded up and 17 inches when folded down so the hatch and exhaust would not be a problem and when folded it will easily clear the rear bumper.
