A 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver is either a Class I or Class II hitch. All Class I and Class II can only use the ball mounts that are recommended for that vehicle.
For safety reasons, if you have to change the rise or drop from the recommended ball mount, then the manufacturer does not recommend to tow that trailer with the Class I or Class II hitch on your vehicle.
We have Class III hitches available for Mercury Mountaineers that will bolt on underneath the OEM 1-1/4 hitch. The Class III hitch will allow you to use ball mounts of different rise or drop. Both hitches cannot be used at the same time.
If you have a 2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineer 4-Door you can use the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75132. If you have a 2006-2010 Mercury Mountaineer you can use the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75437.
Both of those hitches are 2 inch Class III rated hitches.
The Class III hitches will be mounted underneath the OEM hitch so you will have to measure to see how much rise or drop ball mount you would need.
You will also need either the 2 inch hitch ball, # 19247, or a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball, # 19260, depending the coupler size on your trailer. Also the pin and clip, # PC3.
I am sending a link that will show you how to choose a correct ball mount and how to measure the rise or drop you will need.
