Fifth Wheel Towing Setup Recommendation for a 2011 Chevy Silverado 5-1/2 foot Bed

Updated 09/11/2015 | Published 09/10/2015

Question:

Hello, I need the proper gooseneck configuration to tow a 1997 Shadow Cruiser 24foot dry weight 4200lbs with a 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 short bed I think the bed measures 510inch front to back. I like the Curt because you dont have to lift the bed to install making the install easier, however Drawtite is cheaper!!! Also, which is best for my needs an adapter with offset or an offset ball assembly?? Thanking you in advance,

Since your truck has a 5-1/2 foot bed the only way you are going to be able to tow a fifth wheel trailer is if you go with a fifth wheel rail kit and hitch plus a Sidewinder pin box on the trailer. There's no offset hitch or adapter for the gooseneck route that would allow this to happen.

First you will need to start with a rail kit. For that you would want to go with a custom install kit that will minimize drilling when compared to a universal kit like the part # RP50064-58.

For a hitch the part # RP30047 would be a great option as well. This hitch has a pivoting head and an excellent jaw design to allow great king pin contact.

You will need to remove the pin box of the trailer and replace it with a Sidewinder pin box. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have now in order to pick out the correct one.

There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer.

Once you figure out which pin box you have you can check the FAQ I attached that has a chart that shows the correct Sidewinder to get based on which pin box you have.
