Question:
Hello! I am just trying to price everything so I need to know exactly everything I will need to get this working properly. It seems like I can just purchase this kit and then the wiring to hook up to a rented trailer? Is this correct? Thank You!

Since you're looking for an economical option to tow a rental trailer with your 2005 Honda Element the hitch, I recommend is the Curt # C11700. The recommended ball mount is part # 3592.
You will also need a ball. If the rental trailer requires a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256. For a 2 inch ball use # 19258. The rental place should be able to tell you which size you need.
If you prefer the larger 2 inch hitch receiver instead I recommend etrailer # e78KR. It costs more but will give you more options later for accessories since there are more for 2-inch hitches than there are for 1-1/4 inch hitches. If you go this route, I recommend our ball mount kit # 989891.
For wiring you can use # C59496. This is a hardwire kit since there are no plug and play options for your 2005 Element. Installation is not difficult though. You just need access to the tail light wiring. Then you would use the included circuit tester to determine which wires on the driver's side are for the left turn signal, brake lights, and running lights. And on the passenger's side you just need to determine which wire is the right turn signal wire. I have linked a video you can use as a guide.
I have included a couple of helpful links on towing for you as well.
