Are Equalizers Required on Tandem Axle Trailers
Updated 07/17/2015 | Published 07/16/2015 >
Question:
Can a tandem axle work well without an equalizer between the leaf springs? I am wanting to mount a tandem axle under my Coleman popup tent trailer using 3500# axles, and add a 5foot front deck for cargo. Can I just mount tandems spaced as independent axles? Thank you for your assistance.

You will want to use an equalizer on your trailer if you go to a tandem axle setup. You wouldn't be able to install the axles closer together by not running one anyway. You would have to run two sets of single axle hangers. Which when you put the two hangers next to each other it wouldn't let you install the axles any closer than if you had one hanger with an equalizer.
Plus, your suspension would be smoother with an equalizer since it would let the axles pivot up and down slightly over small bumps. The design of a tandem axle setup helps keep at least one axle in contact with the ground when going over bumps or rough terrain.
I attached a page that has all of the equalizers we carry.
