How to Pick Out a Bearing Buddy for a Boat Trailer

Updated 06/12/2015 | Published 06/11/2015

Question:

I am looking to buy a pair of Bearing Buddies for my 21foot tandem axle boat trailer. I was looking at the BB1980A-SS. I measured the diameter of the metal tube surrounding the zerk fitting similiar in appearance to a bearing buddy but without the internal pressure spring, and it is 2inch diameter. So Im assuming I would need the 1980?, and that that would be the correct fit? Thank you.

Sounds like you have figured out which Bearing Buddy you would need and the # BB1980A-SS would work well for you. But just to be sure here is how you would pick out the correct one.

In order to pick out the correct bearing buddy you will need know the pilot hole of your hub. To do this, remove the wheel and tire and remove the grease cap from the center of the hub. Usually it is a metal cap that is just lightly hammered into place. Use a screwdriver to pry off the cap.

Clean the grease off and measure the opening. I have included a video demonstrating the Bearing Buddy.

The Bearing Buddies # BB1980A-SS that you referenced are for hubs with a 1.98 inch hub bore.
