Recommended Weight Distribution for 8800 lb Trailer with 950 lb Tongue Weight

Updated 06/12/2015 | Published 06/10/2015

Question:

I need some guidance on your pro Series weight distribution hitch. I currently tow a 8800 pound trailer car trailer with car and stuff with my F150 XLT. The GVWR on the door says GVWR 7100 pounds. The truck has a ford heavy duty receiver, air bags in the rear and a V8 engine. The trailer has duel electric brake axles. The truck pulls trailer fine but I feel I am on the stability edge, what would you recommend ? I am thinking your Pro Series 10K cap with 1K TW weight. my TW weight is 950

Expert Reply:

If the 950 lb tongue weight figure you mentioned represents the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer, and includes the weight of of anything stowed in your truck bed behind the rear axle, then a weight distribution hitch with sway control like Reese # RP66084 would be ideal. Since you are on the edge of stability dual cam sway control will be a huge benefit. This system is rated for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 600-1200 lbs. The weight distributing shank is included, but you'll need the # 19286 2-5/16 trailer ball.

I'll link you to our help articles that address common WD questions and how to positively determine your trailer tongue weight.
