Question:

What is the difference between harness 118554 and 118384 for a 2012 Jeep Liberty 4x4? Would be pulling with a 4 plug flat connector. Would either work with the factory connector in the rear, or not? Seems like 118554 is much more work to install. What am I missing?

The difference between the Tow Ready trailer wiring harnesses, # 118554 and # 118384, is how they connect to the vehicle. If your 2012 Jeep Liberty came with a factory tow package, then you would just need part # 118384. There should be a factory tow package wiring harness behind the rear bumper of your Jeep that is capped off. You will simply remove the cap, plug in this harness and you are good to go.

If your Jeep Liberty did not come with a factory tow package, but the factory plug is still present at the back of the Jeep, then you may have to take the Jeep up to a dealership and have them flash the computer to activate the tow package.

If the plug is not present, then you will have to use part # 118554. This harness will draw power from the Jeep's battery to power the trailer lights and it will use the vehicle's tail light circuits to signal the trailer lights rather than using a factory tow package.
