Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

Tail Light T Connector Diagram

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2012 Jeep Liberty

Today on our 2012 Jeep Liberty well be installing the Tow Ready T1 connector, part number 118554. First to begin our installation well open up the rear cargo door. Well need to remove the fasteners that secure the taillight housing in place. Starting here on the drivers side, well go ahead and remove the two fasteners and then gently pry the taillight housing away from its current position, being careful not to break the alignment tabs underneath. Now well go ahead and remove the taillight assembly by pressing on the locking tab for the connector and removing it from the assembly. Well go ahead and set it aside for reinstallation later.

Next well go ahead and repeat the same process on the passengers side. Now well start making our connections. With the yellow and brown connector well take the socket and plug it into the connector on the drivers side, plugging in line with the manufacturers wiring. Then we can take the red and green wire connector along with our four pole and feed it down between the bumper cover and the body, and or sheet metal of the vehicle. Next well go ahead and attach the power wire for our converter box.

Using the black wire coming out of the converter, yellow butt connector provided with our install kit well go ahead and crimp the two together. Then well take the extra length of black wire provided with our install kit, strip back one end and install it into the butt connector and crimp it down. Now with that done well go ahead and take a clean cloth and clean off the sheet metal just below the taillight assembly. Once its cleaned we can peel back the two way adhesive and secure the converter box directly to the sheet metal. Now well go ahead and take our power wire and follow the same route as our red and green wire connector and four pole down between the bumper cover and the body of the vehicle.

Next well go ahead and take the white wire with the preattached ring terminal which will be the ground wire for our converter box, and secure it to the body of the vehicle, using a self-tapping screw. Locating an area where the sheet metal doubles up can make for a great ground location. Now with the ground secured, well go ahead and take our taillight assembly and lug it into the opposite connector of our new Tow Ready harness. Now we can go ahead and reinstall the taillight assembly. Now with the drivers side reinstalled well go ahead and get underneath the vehicle and start routing our wires over to the passeners side.

Keep in mind when routing your wires you want to stay away from excessive heat, such as the exhaust, or moving components such as steering or suspension. As we route the red and green wire connector along with our four pole that will go to the center of the vehicle and down to the hitch, as were routing them along well use zip ties to secure it up underneath the vehicle. Now that weve got our red and green wire connector over on the passengers side well go ahead and feed it up behind the bumper cover and the body of the vehicle below the taillight assembly. Now with our wire secured underneath well go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look and move back to the passengers taillight assembly. Here well go ahead and take the red and green wire and zip tie or secure it to the manufacturers wiring. Then we can make our connection with the T connector and the manufactures wiring. Now for our extra wire well go ahead and bundle it up and use a zip tie to secure it, and then take the socket and plug it into the back of the taillight assembly. With that done well go ahead and reinstall the taillight assembly. Next well get back underneath the vehicle and start routing the power wire up to the front of the vehicle into the engine compartment and up to the battery. As we route our wire well go through the frame when possible and zip tie as necessary. When routing through the frame well use a pull wire, or in this case well be using a piece of air tubing to assist in routing our wire. Now that weve got the wire routed up toward the front of the vehicle well need to add a couple of loom clamps to assist in securing our wire. Well be using the Redline metal loom clamp, part number A0500 along with a couple self-tapping screws. Now that weve gone through the second loom clamp well go ahead and feed it up into the engine bay, and then pull it up to the top of the engine compartment. Here we can take a zip tie and secure it, and then route it over to the battery. Now well go ahead and remove the battery cover and prepare our fuse holder. In this application when preparing our fuse holder, well go ahead and cut the fuse holder off center to leave enough length so that we can travel up through the positive battery terminal cover. After we cut it, well go ahead and strip back both sides and on the short side well add the yellow butt connector and secure it. The long side well feed up through the battery cover and then secure our ring terminal to it. Now that weve got the ring terminal secured well go ahead and remove the nut on the positive battery post, install the ring terminal and then resecure the nut. Now well go ahead and finish routing the fuse holder and reinstall the positive battery cover. Next well take our fuse holder and the black power wire and cut off any excess from the power wire. Then well strip it back and attach it to the yellow butt connector. Once weve made this connection well once again go ahead and wrap up the yellow butt connector and wire with some black electrical tape. With that done well go ahead and install the fuse and the fuse cap. This will complete the install of our Tow Ready T1 connector, part number 118554 on our 2012 Jeep Liberty.

Installed this on my 2008 Jeep Liberty Sport. It was very easy to install and of good quality. The only thing I changed was, I used a couple heat shrink connectors instead of the ones that came with it to help a little bit better against moisture and corrosion. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase 256848

Owning a few landscaping and irrigation companies in the past, I've always had guys that knew what they were doing when it came to this stuff. However, not this time. I looked up the parts and decided to call so that I'd be certain to get the right setup for what I needed. Out of the package I had no problems following the clear and concise instructions to completion. Plugged in my trailer, checked the lights...good. Camper battery and D.C. fridge operation while plugged in to harness...good. Went for a drive to test breaks with some minor adjustments as the instructions eluded to being necessary...all good. Very satisfied and would order again in a heart beat. Thank you for your excellent products and respective instructions. 360674

Installed it myself. It needed minor tweaking to get the bolt holes to line-up. I had a shop install the wiring harness. Everything seems fine but I haven't needed to use it yet. It's first use will come within the week. 272798

Just finished installing this harness. Had to wait for a break in the weather. The rear plug in's were a snap to install along with the rear cross wiring. The rear ground was easy along with the converter box. Running the hot wire from the front to the converter box was a pain in the a--. The zip ties did not hold (most broke) and had to use my own. I used plastic wire conduit to prevent rubbing upon turns. Hope this works. Have not hooked the trailer up to check that end yet but all Jeep lights work correctly. A Vehicle lift would have helped greatly as under Jeep space was tight. Less ground clearance than my 2000. Over all i'm pleased with all the items I purchased and will deal with them again if i need additional items. Excellent customer service and follow up. 473303

Wow! This thing is awesome. Not only was it easy, it looks like a factory installed harness. There are no cobbled wires or nasty splices anywhere. Love it. The installation videos on this site make etrailer the best! I hate hard to follow goofy written instructions. P.S. If it had little shrink tubing for the battery wire splice that would have been even better. 41541

Easy to install and nothing was missing. The only complain is on the quality of the zip ties which I replaced with better ones. I recommend covering the wires in flex split wire loom. One year since installation and no issues at all. 734719

This is a good wiring system. It was relatively easy to install. I do have an issue with it blowing the main fuse that is installed at the battery. I can't find a short anywhere, but I keep a set of fuses in my trailer, so I'm ready. 720389

Installed on a 2008 jeep liberty, had to buy a 12m x 1.75 mm tap to clean out the threads from rust. After that installation was ok, I am questioning the torque settings, which seemed very high and was worried about snapping the bolts. The two yellow connectors are heat shrink but directions don't tell you that. My only issue was the black wire to the battery is 12 gauge and the wire off the connector was 14 so supplied connectors were for 12 gauge. The hitch is solidly built and glad I got it done. I recommend this product and etrailer 673313

  • Comparison of Wiring Harnesses to Fit 2011 Jeep Liberty and Other Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer
There are three trailer wiring harnesses that fit the 2011 Jeep Liberty. The Tekonsha # 118554, Curt # C56334, and a Hopkins # HM11142485. All three provide a 4-way connector and install by plugging in behind both tail lights. There is also a hot lead wire that will be run to the battery and a fuse to be installed. Everything for the install is included with each harness. Then the connector will is stowed beneath the Jeep near the trailer hitch. Of the three I recommend the Tekonsha...

See attached picture. I also attached a link to an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. The wiring harness # 118524 is not a fit for your vehicle but does still require the 12V power wire. The correct fit for your 2012 Jeep Liberty is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118554. All of the trailer wiring kits we offer for your 2012 Jeep Liberty will require you to run a power wire up to the positive post of the vehicle battery. This ensures that the amperage draw of your trailer lights does not short out anything on the vehicle's taillight wiring. The install becomes more involved but it really is worth it since you don't have to worry about damaging your vehicle. Since we have the best luck with the Tekonsha brand wiring kits the part # 118554 would be the...

  • Running Power Wire to Battery of 2009 Jeep Liberty to Install Trailer Wiring Harness
For your 2009 Jeep Liberty we offer the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, # C56334 as well as the Tow Ready Custom Fit T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118554. Both harnesses require running the 12-volt feed to the vehicle's battery. In testing, both Curt and Tow Ready have found that the taillights alone on the 2009 Liberty can not support the electrical draw from trailer lights. This is why the black wire must be run to the vehicle battery. With the black wire run to the battery,...

  • 4-Way Recommendation for 2012 Jeep Liberty with 7-Way
Since you have a 7-way installed already on your 2012 Jeep Liberty I have a much easier solution for a 4-way but the part # 118554 would technically fit and work. Instead the part # 118384 would be much easier to install and use. This will plug in line with the 7-way at the rear of your Liberty and then will provide you with a 4-way.

  • How to Wire Brake Controller 2011 Jeep Liberty
To install the Prodigy Brake Controller, # 90195, in your 2011 Jeep Liberty without a 7-way connection you will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want part # 118554. I have included a video that will walk you through the installation process. From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached...

  • Is A Trailer Hitch Available For 2011 Jeep Liberty That Only Receiver Is Visible
All of the trailer hitches we offer for your 2011 Liberty have the receiver located in the middle of the crossmember of the hitch. Some hitches actually have the receiver welded to the bottom of the crossmember and that does hide a lot of the hitch but not the receiver as you mentioned. The trailer hitch I recommend for your Liberty is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch, part # 75578. This is a Class lll trailer hitch with a 2-inch receiver opening. If you plan on doing some...

  • Recommend Wiring Harness With Both 4 And 7-Way Connectors On A 2012 Jeep Liberty
I have the perfect wiring harness option that will give you both 4 and 7-way capabilities on your 2012 Jeep Liberty. You will also not need to install any factory wiring harness to do so. For this, I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # 118554 as this is a complete plug and play kit included with everything needed for installation. However, as this harness only has a 4-way connector, you will want to use the Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole...

  • Wire Color Codes for Installing # 118554 Trailer Wiring Harness on 2010 Dodge Nitro
If you were installing the Tow Ready connector you referenced on a 2010 Dodge Nitro, you would not need to cut or splice any wires, as the T-Connector plugs inline with the existing wiring, making for a plug-and-play installation. You would access the rear of the tail light assemblies as if you were replacing a burned out taillight bulb. The factory wiring harness is unplugged from the tail light assembly, and the T-Connector would plug inline between the factory harness and the tail...

  • Does Rear Bumper have to be Replaced to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Jeep Liberty
I have great news. You will not have to change the bumper on your 2008 Jeep Liberty to install one of our trailer hitches! The receiver on hitches such as # 75578 will be below the factory bumper once installed. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop.
