Troubleshooting Powered A-Frame Trailer Jack Will Retract but Wont Extend

Question:

My father in law has a Holiday Rambler Alumi Lite travel trailer and its a 97 model. The motor will only retract and for a certain distance. There is a clicking sound inside the switch housing and when it clicks it then stops. It will not extend at all to raise the trailer tongue. You can manually raise it and it used to raise once the click inside the motor occurred. It wont do that now and will only go down or retract. This jack is only 4-5 years old. Any ideas?

The problem you describe sounds like the gears in the motor have some teeth that have broken. This is caused from over extending/retracting the jack. The motor can retract the jack foot because when it's retracting, the jack isn't under load.

There aren't any user replaceable parts in an A-Frame trailer jack like the # LC285318 you referred, so your best bet would be to replace the jack.

I'd recommend your Father-in-Law go with the highest capacity jack available. Overkill is good in this situation, because a jack that's rated much higher than it needs to be won't be overworked and will therefore last longer. I'd recommend going with the Bulldog # BD500199 4K capacity jack, which has a 5 year limited warranty.
