Updated 04/02/2015 | Published 04/01/2015

Question:

I have a 1977 scamp 13inch rv/trailer and want to put a system like this one on it. I know i will need new wheels and install the surge components and brake lines but am not sure about the hub and bearings.... there is a 4 hole flange on the spindles.

The disc brake kit you referenced, Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR2D, fits 2000-lb axles and is compatible with 13-inch wheels. To ensure these hub/rotor assemblies will fit your spindles you'll need to verify the bearing numbers in your current hubs and choose a disc brake kit that uses the same bearings. You also need to verify your axle capacity to select a kit that will offer enough stopping power. The brake caliper mounts in this kit will be compatible with your existing 4-bolt brake flanges.

The linked photo shows the typical appearance and location of bearing numbers; matching parts numbers is the best way to choose new parts but if you cannot obtain your bearing numbers you can measure your spindles with a precision digital caliper at points C and D in the photo and then choose a kit whose bearings' inner diameters match these dimensions. If your existing bearing set is a # L44649 for the inner and outer bearing, then the kit you referenced will work.

The linked article covers all the details about adding disc brakes to a trailer and will help guide you through the process of selecting new wheels, a disc-brake-compatible electric-over-hydraulic (EOH)actuator and the other components you'll need like brake lines. Your trailer is too light to use a surge coupler to actuate the brakes but the EOH actuators we offer, such as Dexter # K71-651 and the others shown on the included link, have the required pressure to operate disc brakes. You will also need a brake controller like the Prodigy P2 # 90885 to operate the EOH actuator.
