Question:
Are Bearing Buddies meant to be used in place of normal wheel bearing maintenance or are normal grease repacks still required and if so, what is their benefit ?

The Bearing Buddies are designed to protect your bearings by keeping water and dirt out of the hubs and bearings and ensuring there is enough grease inside the hub.
If you are not experiencing any problems or visually see any grease leaking out of the hub, then you shouldn't have to repack your bearings regularly. I recommend checking your hubs once a year to inspect the condition of your brakes. If you notice any grease leaking out of the hub, then grease could have been compromised, hence why you may want to clean out the old grease and replace with new grease.
Another nice benefit is the Bearing Buddies will prevent overfilling and rear seal damage with an automatic pressure relief feature.
I included a short video and picture for you to look at as well.
