Question:
I have a Mazda 5 with a class 1 hitch, which hitch mounted cargo carrier will work best for this application?

We offer three hitch-mounted cargo carriers that are a confirmed fit with the Class I trailer hitch on your 2014 Mazda 5. The Curt 17x46 Cargo Carrier, # C18145, the Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier, # C18110, and the Reese Cargo Carrier, # 63155, will all work for you.
The Curt cargo carriers are the lightest at about 25 lbs each. The Reese Carrier is 44 pounds, has rails and a mesh floor, and a compatible light kit # 20174 if the cargo blocks your vehicle lights. I have attached video reviews for each carrier for you to check out.
Many Class I trailer hitches have a metal tab in the receiver to prevent certain accessories that are not compatible with class I hitches being used with them. Class I hitches also have a low tongue weight capacity at 200 lbs and all of the hitch mounted cargo carriers have weight capacities over 200 lbs, so it would be easy to exceed the tongue weight of the hitch.
I have attached a photo showing where the tab would be located on a Class I trailer hitch.
If the 200 lb tongue weight capacity of the Class I hitch is exceeded the hitch, carrier and/or vehicle could be damaged. No matter what cargo carrier you choose, you will be limited by your trailer hitches tongue weight capacity. There should be a sticker on your trailer hitch that indicates the tongue weight or TW capacity.
