Perhaps the easiest light kit to install, the sealed light units snap into the built-in mounting brackets on Draw-Tite, Rola and Tow Ready cargo carriers and then plug into the existing 4-pole trailer connector on the vehicle.

Features:

  • Fits Draw-Tite 40101, Rola 59502 and 59507, and Pro Series 63153 and 63155 trailer hitch mounted cargo carriers
  • Off-set Y-harness - one lead measures about 3'

Light Kit Installation

Insert grommet

Step 1

Mount rubber grommets on both sides of cargo carrier tray making sure grommets are seated securely.

Insert light

Step 2

Press tail lamps into grommets until seated securely on both sides of carrier tray.

Route plug

Step 3

Route plug with green wire under cargo carrier to the passenger side (right) and plug into cargo carrier tail lamp.

Route plug with yellow wire under cargo carrier to the driver side (left) and plug into cargo carrier tail lamp.

Secure wiring

Step 4

With supplied cable ties, secure all wiring to the bottom of the cargo carrier.

Please note: With the off-set Y-harness, one wire lead (about 3' long) is run straight to a light, the other lead (about 6' long) is run along the back edge of the carrier before it curves up to the second light. On the 40101 and 59502 cargo carriers, the wires come up through the carriers' mesh floor to attach to the back of the lights. On the Tow Ready carriers 63153 and 63155, the tighter mesh floor is not large enough for the plug to pass through. Therefore run the wire leads under the platform to the lights, then up the front of the carrier and around to the back of the light. This also helps prevent the wires from getting pinched by the cargo. On vehicles where the 4-pole trailer connector is tucked under the vehicle, a 4-pole extension may be required to connect the two plugs. See 'related items.'

Video Transcript for etrailer Hitch Cargo Carrier 20174 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Cargo Carrier Light Kit for railed cargo carriers. This light kit provides your cargo carrier with lights that serve three functions: tail light function, stop or break light function, and turn signals. This light kit is very easy to install. It's going to come with everything that you need for your installation. Once installed, the lights will receive power from the vehicle. The wiring harness is going to plug into the four-way flat connector on your vehicle.

The other ends of the harness plug into the back of the lights. This kit's designed to fit Draw-Tite 40101, Rolla 59502 and 59507, and Pro Series 63153 and 63155, trailer hitch mounted cargo carriers. You can see everything that the light kit comes with. It's going to come with your two incandescent tail lights, nice white base with a red lens. They are SAE and DOT, Department of Transportation, compliant. It's going to come with your rubber mounting grommets.

It's going to come with your wiring harness. It's going to have a four-way flat connector on it. The connector with the green wire goes to the passenger side tail light. The connector with the yellow wire going to it goes to the driver's side tail light. You're going to get zip ties to secure any excess or slack in the wiring that you may have.

Please note that on vehicles where the 4-pole trailer connector is tucked under the vehicle, a 4-pole extension may be required to connect the two plugs. That item is sold separately and it's available here at etrailer.com. What I want to do now is simply just go ahead and hook these up to power. That way you can see what they look like with power running to them. These plugs just plug directly into the back of the housing of the lights. The plug goes in and then we'll connect our four-way flat connector.

We'll also turn off our overhead lights so you can see it in a lower light setting. This is the tail, or running, light function of the kit. When we apply our brakes, you can see how that signal output increases, really brightens up quite a bit. It's going to do that same thing when we activate our turn signals. This would be hazards. If we do just one side . We'll do the other side. That's going to do it for today's look at the Cargo Carrier Light Kit for railed cargo carriers.

Very well packaged, arrived in good shape. Easy to put together. Have 12.50 x 35 inch tires plenty of clearance, can not open tail gate with large tire. Ordered light/wire kit, changed to different lights. Will work great for what I need. 365843

Delivery was quick ordered Mon mornning deliverd Fri afternoon.Trailor was very easy to put together looks great and should do what I got it for.. could come with 6 larger washers fo 3 center bolts.Lights allso went on easy.i chose to run them through the smaller tubes to lessen exposure seeing that i cut them to add an extension (to short by 12 inchs) then I zip tighed tupperware over inside to protect from cargo banging into them and popping them out..in all I would recemend great for the price 148843

Package was received with no issues, well packed. Assembly was easy. The light kit install instructions could use a little more detail, hard to tell what they're supposed to look like when properly seated, but not a big issue. Would like to see the wiring harness light connector removable so as to run the wires inside the support channel, but not a big deal. My harness just fit into my connector, but I would imagine others would need an extension. Overall, very happy with the product. I hauled a big gas grill an it was no issues. Plenty of tie-down options. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a way to expand storage. I can take 7 people in my SUV and now I have a place for their stuff. 142387

No problems. The only thing I would change is to make the wires for the lights longer so they could be attached along the perimeter of the frame instead of jutting across.

Used this for my new carrier. Fit was perfect. I extended the wires in order to run them inside the tubes of the rack. Not necessary, but a cleaner look. You could just zip tie them to the rack if you want. Lights are bright. No need for LED type. 403743

We're currently on a 9000 mile road trip from California through Canada to Nova Scotia, to Maine and back... we purchased a car carrier and waterproof cover and they have performed as advertised! Lots of rain, muddy conditions here in Canada and all of our camping equipment stored in our carrier remains clean and bone dry! Great sturdy products. I purchased the light kit for the carrier and it too has performed flawlessly. The carrier is installed on my 2016 Subaru Outback. I had a 2" hitch previously installed and the carrier with all the weight looks great. I don't feel it on the road... 422204

For $20 it's not bad, but the plugs on the lights are a little sketchy and the number of zip ties are a bit short if you want thorough security. They are otherwise easy to install 614546

They work just fine. The cord to the trailer light socket next to the receiver is to short. Had to purchase an extender. Also, the light fit to loose into the sockets on the carrier. Will have to come up with something to keep them in. 257350

I used the cargo basket to transport 2 coolers and some miscellaneous camping gear. The basket was easy to assemble and the additional lighting option was easy to install also. 719950

These lights fit my cargo carrier perfectly. Quick and very easy to attach and set up for use. Good Price. I would only suggest a cap or some type of cover for the exposed plug end when not in use. 702793

it ws better than the original wiring harness that failed because it was longer and could be installed without exposure to scuffing when driving over deep curbs. 643371

Very nice set up. Works great on my carrier rack to be able to have brake and tail lights without worrying about the gear on the rack blocking the vehicles lights. 621656

The product itself appears to be pretty well made. The wired connections fit nice and snug and were sufficient length to route underneath the cargo carrier i purchased and plug into the hitch harness. I only gave it 4 stars since it didnt fit in the 24x60 Reese Cargo Carrier #63153, even though the description says it will. The rubber gasket and light are too small for the oblong openings in the carrier and I had to ziptie them in place so they dont fall out. 617203

Was a little concerned that this product would not live up to my expectations. I was totally wrong. Quality product great, easy to install, make sure you follow the directions as the product fits very snug to create a tight fit. Wiring Harness could have been a little longer to route the wires the way "I" would have liked. Overall Quality product. 493629

The light kit arrived quickly, and was easy to install. I agree with the comments about the problem of those two plugs sticking into where the baggage will rest on the rack (it will push against them when you're stopping), and that the grommets seem to not hold the lights into the rack openings very securely. The electrical wires seem to be long enough now. Sure like doing business with etrailer! 437766

Love, love, love our cargo carrier - used it when we traveled across the states. It's sturdy, easy to use, and very handy, since we travel with two large dogs. Pups had room in the van because they weren't squished in with luggage. So, the product is great, but we also want to give a shout out to the customer service and the extremely prompt and friendly communications. 367467

great all in one package, no need to splice wires or buy any additional wires. fits right into the 6" oval trailer light brackets. Plugs up to my jeeps trailer plug by the hitch reciever. Took me less than 10 min to install. Plugging the wire into the light itself takes a little patience but once you get the plugs lined up it goes right in. The lights themselves feel solid. 327410

by:

Works great. Installed easy. 315137

- 20174
by:

Lights work well. The only complaint is that they did not fit into the trailer hitch carrier snugly. I used cable ties to secure them better onto the hitch carrier. Not a big deal. Overall, though, very nice. And, yes, I would purchase them again. 311717

- 20174
by:

Lights were no problem; they fit well, were sealed and water resistant, and worked as expected. The wiring harness was the problem! The two connecting 'branches' to the lights were the incorrect lengths, no matter how they were manipulated. So extra wire was on one side and the other was too short. 305189

- 20174
by:

Exactly what I ordered and it fit perfect ! 301845

- 20174
by:

light slips out of housing easily but other than works fine. 276262

by:

Would not recommend this kit. Had to extend all wires on lights to reach and not be damaged when not on vehicle. After redoing wires to both lights, they got so hot they burned plastic housing. Replace both lights with led ones. Better off buying your own lights and wires and install. 273738

The Cargo Carrier, Cargo Bag & Light Kit were perfect! NO water entered the Cargo bag, the light kit was easily installed! It made traveling so easy. We stayed in a hotel on the way to the beach & we just simply put the bag in our SUV so it was secure overnight! Perfect solution! Customer Service is excellent. We didn't have any problems, but when I had questions before purchasing emails were answered promptly! 260203

Very easy to install and adds safety to people notice the carrier on the back of the car! We initially installed them on the underside of the carrier and then realized they would hit on steep hills, so moved them to the top. 248256

For your 2015 Subaru Forester, I recommend the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # E98839 which has a 2 inch receiver and is able to support tongue weights up to 525 lbs. This hitch will have the top shank of your cargo carrier sit at 14-1/4 inches off the ground. • The Rola Cargo Carrier, part # 59502 has a dedicated spot for mounting a license place if necessary and has an available light kit, part # 20174 for incandescent lamps or # 98174LED for LED lamps. This would fit the cargo bag part # 988501 that you are interested in as well so it would be your best option that wouldn't require any fabrication.

  • Does a Trailer Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Require a Light Kit on a 1995 Buick Roadmaster Wagon
  • If the cargo carrier and the cargo loaded on it do not obscure the vehicle tail lights, you do not have to have a light kit installed on the carrier. However, it is still a good idea to get a light kit for safety purposes. Since you have the wagon model of the 1995 Buick Roadmaster, you would first need to install Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # C55352. For cargo carrier, # 63155, you can use light kit # 20174. I have included a link to the installation details for the vehicle...

  • Cargo Carrier Clearance From Rear Mounted Spare Tire On 2012 Jeep Wrangler
  • I did some research on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, and per the Jeep website, if you have a Class lll trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver, the tongue weight capacity for that hitch is 500 lbs. The weight capacity would include the cargo carrier weight along with anything that would be carried. The towing capacity for your Jeep Wrangler is 2000 lbs. If you have a Class lll hitch, one of the carriers I recommend is the 24x60 Pro Series Cargo Carrier, part # 63153. It features a 2-1/2 inch rise...

  • What is the Capacity of a 400 lb Tongue Weight Trailer Hitch Paired with a 500 lb Capacity Carrier
  • The tongue weight capacity of the CURT Trailer Hitch, # C13143, for the 2010 Lexus RX 350, is 600 pounds. If the vehicle tongue weight capacity is under 600 pounds or under the 500 pounds of the carrier then you go by the lowest rating. Tongue weight is calculated by the weight of the carrier plus the weight of the cargo loaded on it. You also have to add in the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the vehicle. So, if you have a 50 pound carrier and put 200 pounds of...

  • Adding a Light Kit Compatible with Most Hitch Mounted Cargo Carriers
  • The Light Kit for Draw-Tite, Tow Ready, and Rola Railed Cargo Carriers # 20174 is a great option to add to a cargo carrier. To use it on the Curt cargo carrier # C18145 you referenced, you would simply need to add the Replacement Oval Mounting Bracket for Light Kit # 106873 with self tapping screws like # 101131802.

  • Recommendation for an Enclosed Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier
  • There are no boxes that will fit in trailer hitch mount cargo carriers like # 63155 but there are bags that fit, # 59102. It is not waterproof because to be waterproof it has to be able to be submerged under water for a certain period of time and not let any water in. We do carry some enclosed hard shell trailer hitch mount cargo carriers that will fit in Class II, 1-1/4 inch trailer hitches though. First we have the Thule Transporter, # TH665C. This carrier can tilt down, lick, and...

  • Is it Possible/Required to Install a Trailer Light Kit on Motorcycle Cargo Carrier
  • The track length of the # MT70101 is 79 inches and sets a couple inches above the height of the trailer hitch. You will need to compare the overall length of your motorcycle with the distance between your vehicle's taillights to if they would be visible either around the motorcycle or through the rims. At the very least the third brake light will definitely still be visible since it sits on top of the vehicle. If you wanted to install a light kit you will need the kit part # 20174 and...

  • Attaching License Plate to Cargo Carrier
  • The legalities regarding a cargo carrier obscuring a rear license plate can vary widely by state. Your best bet would be to directly contact the State Police or Department of Transportation in the states in which you will be traveling. Many cargo carriers do not provide a dedicated place to attach a license plate. You could drill two holes through the rear rail in order to bolt the plate in place to temporarily attach the plate, if needed. The Rola Cargo Carrier, part # 59502 has...
