How to Pick Out Replacement Brake Calipers for a Boat Trailer

Updated 04/14/2020 | Published 01/13/2015

Question:

I have a 1994-1995 Ranger bass boat with a matching trailer. I was thinking about replacing the surge brake calipers. Is this something you would carry and what information would you need for matching the part?

To replace the calipers on your boat trailer you will need to know the weight capacity for the axle that is on the boat trailer and the brand of the calipers. A very common brand is the Kodiak calipers, typically they will have 225 stamped on the caliper as well like the # KDBC225DAC. This system would work on axles that range from 3,500 lbs to 6,000 lbs.

If you need a different caliper check out the link I attached that will take you to a page that has all of the calipers we offer. You will want to select the brand and capacity you need from the filters on the page.

The trailer in question has Kelsey Hayes calipers on it, and it looks like the pistons are froze. I myself havent seen them as of yet, but this is my brother-in-laws trailer. He sent me pictures of the calipers and I find it hard to believe they are froze. They are in great shape, not unless there is a special way of freeing up the pistons.

We do have a couple of Hayes replacement calipers available (linked below) but unfortunately we don't carry any pistons that would work for your brother-in-law's setup. There might be some rust built up around the piston that's freezing it up - you could try spinning it in place to break apart any corrosion to see if this loosens it up enough for proper operation.
