Which Bearing Buddy and Grease for 1700 Lbs Carry-on Utility Trailer

Updated 01/06/2015 | Published 01/05/2015

Question:

I keep seeing your website come up when I am looking for trailer parts and am now ready to purchase bearing buddies and grease. I own a used Carry-On 4x6 utility trailer 1700 lbs cargo weight and I have a spare bearing that says its a 1 1/16. I dont put this into the water but will be doing a few 500+ mile trips with it. I was wondering if the 1.980 bearing buddy was the correct one and what grease to purchase. I would like to repack the bearings to be sure they are done correctly and so that I can learn about the trailer. I also would like to have a dedicated grease gun for the bearings, so a small gun would be the better option. I am not in a rush, just getting things lined up for the winter work so that I am ready for spring.

Although bearing buddies are primarily meant for boat or PWC trailers, you can certainly use them on a utility trailer. To choose the correct diameter Bearing Buddy use a precise measuring tool like a dial caliper and measure the inner diameter on the hub where the grease cap sits. You will want to match that measurement as closely as possible to the measurement on the Bearing Buddy product pages. I have attached a link to all of our bearing protectors for you to reference.

The alternative method would be to remove your hub and get the part number of the outer bearing. The part number will be stamped into the bearing. Once you have the outer bearing part number, I can recommend the correct Bearing Buddy for you.

For bearing grease LubriMatic Disc/Drum Brake and Wheel Bearing Grease, part # L11465, is intended specifically for lubricating trailer wheel bearings. This grease is also available in a 4 pound can, part # L11380. For a grease gun you can use # L30200.
