I spoke with my contact at one of our winch suppliers. They told me that for the use you described and for a single davit used on a boat lift the best winch would be a brake winch.

Depending on the weight of the boat you have the brake winch I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Self-Locking Brake Winch, part # DL15721. This winch has a 2,500 lb weigh capacity and has a fully automatic brake meaning the load stays in place even when the handle is released. This winch can handle up to 34 ft of 5/16 inch diameter wire cable like part # DL24102.

If 2,500 lbs is too much for your boat, we do offer a brake winch that is similar but with a 1,200 lb weight capacity. It is part # DL14934. This winch has the same features as the larger winch but uses a smaller cable like part # DL24045 which is 7/32 inch diameter and 50 ft long.
