An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall when loaded. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride when loaded or towing because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for 2001 Ford Ranger Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System: Complete Installation

Today on the 2001 Ford Ranger we are going to install part number TFRR0504A from Timbren. Before we started we actually did a few test runs. We did it fully loaded, halfway loaded, and empty. Now we will go ahead and install the Timbren kit and then we will go ahead and try it again.

The suspension enhancement actually replaces the factory bump stop right here. What is going to happen is we have got to take off this factory bump stop, it comes off there is usually a bolt on top, and there is a part that comes down here that gets clamped onto the axle and replaces the bump stop here on the bottom. Lets go ahead and take this off first.

We will go ahead and start the sub assembly. Whats going to happen is this screw will go on the inside. So just take it and put it into the end of the socket, and there is a little washer inside so you have to work it inside the washer. And it is going to bolt on to the top of this bracket here. And this bracket will actually get bolted onto the bottom of the truck. All right when you tighten these down you want to get these about hand tight. All right we will go ahead and install this part on the bottom of the frame now.

Go ahead and slide our lower bracket into place. Take care, stay away from any brake lines or any other components. Line it up straight. And then what happens is the clamp goes on the bottom and the two bolts will go through and hold it into place. When you tighten down the bolts you want to do them evenly on both sides. With one complete we will go ahead and move to the other side and start on that one.

On the one completed side you can see that we have about one inch of space between the rubber bushing and the bracket below it. When you get loaded up it is going to take up that space. The more load on it the harder it works. Here we go again, after the install we will show you how we can reduce the body roll in it with the heavy, light load, and no load. With a few simple steps and a couple simple hand tools we have our suspension enhancement installed. And there you have it for part number TFRR0504A from Timbren.

I actually found that airbags worked better for my truck and trailer. I ordered those from you as well. May I return the Timbrens for at least partial store credit?

by:

I have not fully loaded my Odyssey yet BUT compare to original “pacifiers” which are made from kinda tough popcorn, those timbers are looking reliable.

by:

Easy installation. Good quality.

by:

Easy to install. Works as advertised. Etrailer rocks!

by:

Installed this on my 2001 Explorer. Install is easy (assemble unit, bolt on in place of existing bump stop). Annoyed to find it doesn't fit. Specs are gap 1/2"-1-1/2"; there was a gap of 2-3/4". Yeah, they sell spacers for $27 each, but it's really annoying to buy a $225 product that says it fits your truck, only to find that you have to spend 50% more to actually adapt it to your truck!

by:

Very easy to install. I got the product in two days. Love etrailer products. THANKS.

by:

Very easy to install took about 30 minutes. If it manages the weight of my trailer I will be more impressed with your product.

Very poor packaging. The box is coming apart and USPS reinforced it. Found out this product doesn,t work on a 2018 Winnebago Intent. It will cost me almost $[XX] to return it.

Shipping was fast, product looks to be well made.

Customer service was great. Fast delivery. Very easy to install. 35 minutes it was done.

by:

Easy installation and perfect fit!

by:

Great product there leveled the load and made tow way better.

Thanks

by:

Got them a day ago and installed the next day. Super easy installation.

by:

What a great product. This has made a night and day difference pulling a 5th wheel.

by:

Really not sure it's doing anything. No noticeable difference when towing my camper.

by:

Part was reasonably priced and arrived early. Very happy with the process.

by:

Service is great and product appears to function as advertised. For what it is seems like product is priced a little high. I'd be very surprised if it costs more than $20 to make them.

  • Timbren Springs Fell Off Under Load on a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country
This is so uncommon that it is the first time I have heard of this happening. The springs are very durable rubber and unless they were installed incorrectly, in the wrong place, the wrong system was used or they were severely overloaded, I cannot think of a way this would happen. The system is meant to be installed on a vehicle with a suspension in good working order. So if there were stock suspension problems, the installer should have noticed that. The correct system for your 2005...

  • Difference in the Timbren 3,000-Lb System and the 1,000-Lb System on 2005 Ford Ranger
For your 2005 Ford Ranger 4WD the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, part # TFRR0504A, has a 3,000-lb weight capacity and is for use on the rear suspension. The Timbren Front Suspension Enhancement System, part # TFXF1004A, has a 1,000-lb weight capacity and is for the front suspension. The Timbren system will work with the factory suspension. It does not work before the factory suspension. When mounted on the vehicle it will sit about 1 inch above the rear axle. When the vehicle...

  • Can Timbren Helper Springs be Used on a 1988 Ford Ranger 4x4 with 3 Inch Lift
Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement # TFRR0504A is designed for a stock 1988 Ford Ranger 4x4 but they do make spacers to use the system with a lifted truck. The spacer # A25723-90AH00 is 1 inch tall so if the distance between the top of the axle and bottom of the frame is 3 inches more on your truck than stock you would need a total of 6 spacers. Longer bolts will also be needed but will have to be obtained locally.
