etrailer cargo carrier

Note: This is not rated for use on the back of an RV or motorhome.

This cargo carrier lets you transport your gear on the back of your vehicle. It tilts down for cargo area access even when it's loaded with gear, and you can fold it up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. It has raised side rails that help contain your gear and provide tie-down points, and the steel mesh floor offers stability for your cargo.

Tilting and Folding Design

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier tilts down - even when it's loaded with gear - so you can easily access your vehicle's rear cargo area. Before you tilt the carrier make sure your cargo is strapped down and secure. Simply support the front edge with one hand, remove the pins (standard 5/8" or 16 mm diameter 2" hitch pins) located in the upper and center shank holes, and gently lower the carrier.

etrailer cargo carrier

When the carrier is not being used, you can fold it up against the back of your vehicle. This lets you fit into your garage and other tight parking spaces without removing the basket. To fold the basket up, just remove the pin from the center shank hole, fold the rack up toward your vehicle, then reinsert the pin into the bottom shank hole.

Raised Side Rails

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier has raised side rails that help keep your cargo in place. The rails also provide multiple anchor points for a cargo net, bungee straps, or other tie-downs.

Angled and Extended Shank

etrailer cargo carrieretrailer cargo carrier

The shank on this carrier is raised to improve ground clearance, and to make it easier for you to load and unload your cargo. It also extends the basket away from your vehicle, which helps prevent contact with your bumper or rear-mounted spare tire when the carrier is folded up.

Easy Assembly and Durable Construction

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier is easy to assemble. Simply bolt it together with the included hardware. The basket is made of heavy-duty steel with a rust-resistant black powder coat finish, and it has an easy-to-clean mesh floor. Reflectors (sold separately) are available to increase the carrier's visibility at night. You can also add a light kit (sold separately), which is required if your gear blocks your vehicle's tail lights.

Automatic Hitch Pin Hole Alignment

Alignment Collar

The stop collar automatically aligns the pin holes on the shank and your hitch every time you install the carrier. It prevents you from having to get on your hands and knees to check for pinhole alignment. It's quick and easy to install, just slide the collar onto the shank, insert the carrier into your hitch, align the pin holes, slide the collar up against your hitch, and tighten down the bolt with included hand knobs. Once it's set up you never have to adjust it again.

Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin

etrailer cargo carrier

An anti-rattle hitch pin is included for securing the carrier to the hitch receiver. Align the hole in the shank with the hole in your vehicle's hitch, insert the pin into the hole, and secure with the clip. This will reduce noise and movement of the carrier in your hitch.

Super disappointed in this etrailer purchase. The product came in a large box that was fully intact and not damaged. The actual cargo basket was meticulously wrapped and appeared to be brand new as expected. The other components however, like the arm, were in boxes that were smashed, old, worn, and had multiple layers of old tape. The arm itself was scratched and banged up, even rusty in spots. Clearly it was used or had been a returned item. If I wanted a dented, gouged, and rusty Cargo Carrier I would have purchased one used, for half the price. This is not the quality I expect from etrailer.. I have purchased many racks and other items from this company and usually the quality is outstanding. This time they dropped the ball. I have since read other reviews and it is apparent that this is not an isolated incident. I'd have sent it back if it wasn't so damn heavy and awkward to lug around.

Holds all my gear. Just what I was hoping for. Now my dogs have the car all to themselves.
Really bummed that there are "Made in China" stickers all over it. I went with etrailer because I thought they were a USA company. I guess no one can turn down that cheap slave labor. Hopefully my gear does not end up on the highway.

etrailer.com IS a US company with our headquarters located in Wentzville, MO about 40 miles west of St. Louis. The carrier is manufactured for us overseas in China.

by:

Receiver arm snapped 10 miles into the trip. It looks like the arm was made of cast iron which would explain why it couldn't handle the 200lb generator. I would not recommend this product to carry anything more than folding chairs until the manufacturer quits using cast iron.

Honestly this is very unusual for this to happen. Customer Service will be in touch with you to have this carrier returned.

Great luggage rack! 4,500 miles in 3 weeks on the first trip and it performed exactly as intended. It didn't sag or rattle. We used a Rola bag with ratchet straps for extra stability. We loaded luggage, too many other bags and fishing gear for a family of four. Better than buying a bigger vehicle. As the picture shows, it also makes a great tailgate/table for fishing or camping.

Jimmy

The luggage rack worked well until the hitch receiver bolt sheared off when I tried to unscrew. We then needed to cut the shank and the receiver from the truck. I was told the replacement part I needed would not be sold to me individually and I would need to buy a complete luggage rack. I offered to buy it and did not ask for a free replacement. I was also told the product has a lifetime warranty but that the warranty would not be honored because I cut it from my hitch receiver. That doesnt make sense. Why would an American company not offer the part that needs to be replaced? This is the USA. We fix what needs to be fixed instead of just buying another one. I am very disappointed. Now Ill need to find an American company that will produce the replacement part. Maybe etrailer will help before its too late. I really hope so.

Sierra K.

6/21/2022

At this time, we do not have replacement shanks available for this cargo carrier. If the bolt was left on the vehicle for a long period of time, it may have rusted inside. In that case, some lubricant can be used to try and penetrate the rust. If that does not work, you can drill it out with a bit.

by:

After searching for one of these and finding them I chose to go with this one, "Made In The USA" rather than one "Made In China." The price difference was $5.00! That's all! I have had BAD experiences with items made in China. Workmanship is sub-par to say the least. I purchased this one and could not be happier with it! Quality is awesome, works flawlessly and is a great bang for the buck. If you're looking for a cargo carrier for your hitch/receiver buy THIS one! Shipping was quick also!!! E-Trailer is a great dealer with QUALITY products!!

This carrier worked out great. The tilt down feature is helpful to have but I didn't really need it. However, the fold up feature was helpful when driving around, so I recommend that as a convenience.

The only thing I had trouble with was the hitch bolt. I have a Thule bike rack that I've used with my truck hitch receiver and never had a problem, but this rack's hitch bolt was a real pain to get in at first. Don't be dismayed. With the rack off of the vehicle, I used some WD-40 and some lithium grease on the bolt and then used an adjustable wrench to screw it in and out a number of times. I noticed a bunch of either paint or metal shards gumming up the threads on the bolt each time I removed it. After about 5 times of screwing it in and out, wiping off the bolt with a towel, adding some more grease once in a while, it got to the point that I could screw it in and out by hand pretty easily. Problem solved.

I'm really happy with this rack. It fit two big coolers of food and beer plus beach umbrellas and other stuff. It's really strong and sturdy. The biggest issue was not the weight on the rack, but whether the rear suspension on the Highlander could hold it with our other junk in the back plus passengers. :-)

Its been a year since I purchased this and I used it on another vacation, driving through multiple states. Its very sturdy and I continue to be pleased with this purchase. I will say I had some trouble with the hitch bolt again. It was impossible to screw in by hand and using an adjustable wrench is a tedious chore. I didnt have time before leaving on the trip to do what I did the last time wd-40lithium. It would be nice to have a better locking system...something other than a bolt that screws in. Ill have to look for that. All things considered, Im still happy with this rack and I would still recommend it. Im sure Im going to be using this for many more years.

Bought this as a slightly used product from etrailer.com and it worked great for Holiday travel. Fits our Subaru Ascent perfectly & provides that little added space we needed without putting on our roof box. Only disappointment was the parts bag was not sealed and parts were everywhere in the box with 2 missing washers (easily replaced) …see pics. Product is sturdy and no sway like stated by etrailer description.

by:

This will work on a Jeep Library if you add a hitch extension. I welded an 7” extension to the receiver opening. (No rattling) If you weld it, make sure it’s level or the carrier won’t be. With the spare on the back of my Jeep the carrier wouldn’t fold up. Does now with room to go. I have a Motorhome and this is my tow vehicle. Carrier is used mainly for bikes.
I was tired of booking up my small boat trailer with spare in the way. Now ball is accessible. This is a well built carrier. Doesn’t move or rattle at all. Thanks etrailer.

As you can see, my previous review it it it is primarily used for bicycles on trips on my tow vehicle. Hav used it only once in that capacity since I got it because of this Covid lockdown. Worked very good. Used occasionally on the Liberty for carrying large bags of pet food, topsoil, etc. when I’m not using a pickup. No complaints about this carrier.

by:

This has been a great solution for me. It is versatile and very sturdy. I use it on the back of my 40' 5th wheel. I wanted to transport my e-bike, as well as other bulky items. I built a bike rack in the cargo tray, added tie-down D-rings to secure the additional items.

by:

Positives first. This is a very sturdy cargo carrier and seems to be made well. Good welding, solid build. Negatives. Packaging to protect the product was sub par as mine arrived damaged(bent). It was fixable with a pair of vise grips and some black paint so I didn’t send it back. My biggest problem with it is that it doesn’t allow me to use a standard locking pin to secure it to the receiver on my vehicle. I have to use the threaded pin, nut, and cotter pin, which are supplied, but has no theft protection. Overall it is a decent product but a couple of small changes would make it better.

I hate to hear that it arrived with minor damage that needed to be repaired. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you. We do have a threaded lock that will work for the carrier. It is part # e99047.

So incredibly happy with the cargo carrier. Assembly wasn't too bad. It took my husband and I maybe an hour. Did a dry run the weekend before putting it onto our Yukon. Took us about a half hour. We were so happy with how easy it was once we got the hang of it. I'd definitely recommend buying the bag to go along with it. We were pleasantly surprised at how much stuff we could fit into the carrier. We didn't even really notice any difference when driving the vehicle. We went away for a long weekend and ended up just tilting the empty carrier up the whole weekend vs taking it off. It was so easy. We can't wait until we get to use this again!

by:

Overall it bolted together easily with my 14 yo daughter and I using ratchets and a supplied utility wrench. Looks fine and worked out for our camping trip. Tilts easily and I checked if any nuts loosened on the road and none did. My driveway of course is angled such that it scrapes when it and the Outback are fully loaded. And it scraped a couple times on the trip in commercial ramped type approaches to businesses but I figure as soon as it rusts there it’ll scrape again and clear that off. Probably less in the car and it would clear. I do wish it had tie down loops vs using the cross bars/frame etc so the hooks when metal don’t scratch it to hell and gone. I used ratchet straps, plastic hooked bungees and metal hooked bungees and loops would’ve been preferred. It did mean our Spaniel could come and play though too!!

by:

I'm kind of cautious on most items that we are purchasing - always wanting to get nice quality for a fair price. We've used our cargo trailer multiple times since we purchased it a year ago and it has worked out great for us. I can't say we've gone on any major trips with it but our little trips to haul things from one location to another have gone well. The trailer fits nicely on our vehicle, no rattling during the drive.
I would recommend this cargo trailer!

by:

I thought it was going to be far enough out to clear my ladder but it isn’t. Only reason for two star review, don’t think it’s really a problem with the product. Going to make an insert for my hitch to move it out a couple inches.

Etrailer Expert

Jenny N.

5/26/2023

I must admit that I am having a little trouble picturing how the carrier is working with your ladder. Would you be able to send a picture? Be careful when using an extender with the hitch as does reduce hitch capacity by 50 percent which will affect how much you can carry with the cargo carrier.

by:

I’m totally psyched this came earlier than expected. We are going on a trip next weekend with our Jeep Wrangler to Barnstable Beach out in Cape Cod. It took maybe half hour 45 minimum to put together and was very easy. After assembling of course I had to see how it fit and couldn’t be any happier it is perfect. I have an oversized tire and had concerns of it fitting past the spare tire but thankfully Etrailer has the measurements online and I took measurement prior to ordering. I just have one problem my spare tire is big so it doesn’t let the rack fold up enough to allow pin in to secure it in the upward position but I can easily modify and drill the hole a little bigger, I literally need 1/8 - 1/16 of an inch to get pin in. I guess I could try letting air out of spare tire that may work. I can’t wait to try it out it will definitely make a huge difference in packing up the Jeep. Thank you etrailer for the speedy delivery and and the great information about the product online. It’s great to have good info prior to purchasing.

Qx60. I travel a lot and this cargo carrier does the job. I already crossed North America twice with it. Still running strong. Becomes rusty over the time but seems durable

by:

It could use better assembly instructions. It was easy to assemble but if one hasn't assembled one before you do read the instruction which were not very good. As all assembly instructions these days, print was too small and one part stated to install the bolt in the "forward hole", which way is forward toward the truck or looking at the trailer. Small issue but unclear. I went to a review of the carrier on you tube and could determine where things go better than the instructions provided.

by:

Overall, really pleased. Works as advertised. Only used it once, but never noticed it behind my vehicle even in super windy conditions (west Texas) at highway speeds (about 150 lbs on it in an etrailer bag that is also really nice). The tilting function is nice to have, but in reality it only allows my tailgate to open 3-4 inches further and its a 2 person job with any kind of weight on it...so doesn't really accomplish what I wanted it to, but I wouldn't slam the whole carrier over that.

Dustin

2/23/2023

After several uses, my opinion hasnt changed. Well made, sturdy. Gives me options to haul stuff without hooking up a trailer or rearranging the interior of either of my vehicles. highly recommended.

by:

We really like the concept of this cargo Rack. It folds up to sit flat and it sits back far enough so we can get the doors of our Sprinter. The down side and the thing that has us most concerned is that it wont sit level when in the loading and travel position. In fact it seems to tilting back more and more with age. We do not over load it I am guess but I don’t think we ever put more that about 200 lbs on it. Also it seems to be rusting a bit from the inside but then we do live in the NW where is rains a lot. I have inclosed some pictures below

by:

Step 1 of assembly, the holes do not line up between the basket halves and the connecting bars. This is integral to the structure’s assembly, making it impossible to do. That and the hardware was loose all over the package but luckily seemed to all be there by chance. Seems there was no QA before shipping…makes me quite nervous about installing this on my vehicle.

I would start both screws with your fingers so that it is finger-tight, then torque them intermittently so that they are both tightened in the same degree. If you tighten one bolt all of the way, then do the next, it may not end up straight.

by:

Easy Assembly, easy install. Put it on my draw tight 2in hitch and a 2019 Nissan pathfinder. While tilted up, you will be unable to open the hatch very far. But tilt it down or if loaded, tilt it down further and hatch can open. No issues so far. Going on the first trip with it this weekend.

by:

We needed some extra space for when we go camping and this was perfect. Works great in our 2019 Buick Enclave. We have used it for over 1000 miles and have had no trouble

by:

Very nice quality. Just wish there was a slightly higher lift from the hitch insert because it drags when I go up driveways. Also wish it was a welded metal plate instead of a plug that gets pushed out when it drags. I removed the plug cause it was gonna get lost anyway.

by:

Bolts holding baskets together are too short. Self-locking nuts require threads to penetrate plastic insert. Neck of tubing holding basket appears to be crooked. Basket sits significantly farther from vehicle on drivers side than passengers

by:

Product iss great! Used this carrier in combination with the etrailer cargo bag (Item #988501) on our 13 hour trip from IL to beaches of SC and never heard or felt it.

I didn't realize that this carrier hitch has a threaded hitch pin for anti-rattle, so I didn't have to use my standard hitch anti-rattle device. The assembly and installation were pretty easy and the included hitch collar made subsequent attachments to my hitch a breeze. While the included wrenches we ok, I would recommend using a socket wrench as it is much more suited for the job.

I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that my 2014 GMC Acadia hatch had just enough clearance to open without using the tilt feature. BTW, the tilt feature on a loaded carrier definitely requires more than one person.

Only con I can think of is that the pins for the folding feature do not slide in very easily, maybe because the holes don't line up perfectly. It definitely takes some twisting of the pins at the same time as fiddling withe the angle of the carrier to get the pin thru. It is do-able, but takes some "practice" for sure.

EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE NOTE:
After our trip I was looking for a locking hitchpin (item #e99047) and noticed that the price of the carrier was about $30 less than when I originally purchased a month earlier. etrailer does have a competitor price match guarantee policy, but nothing specific to etrailer branded products. I asked them about this and they immediately refunded the price difference. Regardless of if the had done this, I still would have purchased the locking hitchpin, but this proves their excellence in customer service.

Sounds like you are looking for a hitch mounted cargo carrier to mount in a front hitch for your truck. The most popular cargo carrier we have is the etrailer # e98874 which will fit a 2 inch hitch and can fold up when not needed. Being able to fold could be very helpful in a front hitch. I attached a review video for the carrier for you to check out as well. This carrier also has a 500 lb carrying capacity.

  • Could etrailer Cargo Carrer e98874 Fit with Rear Spare of 2019 Jeep JL Rubicon
The folding etrailer Cargo Carrier part # e98874 has the most clearance of any cargo carrier to fit past the rear spare of your 2018 Jeep Wrangler out there. When folded down it has a distance of 19-1/2 inches from it's pin hole to the nearest portion of the carrier and then when folded up that dimensions is 9-1/2 inches. So determine if this will fit with your spare you'd need to measure from the pin hole of your hitch out to the furthest point out on your rear spare and if it's less...

  • Cargo Carrier Recommendation That Folds Up When Not In Use
While we don't carry an adapter that will allow you to tilt a cargo carrier up when not in use, I have another solution. I know you may not want to replace the entire cargo carrier, however the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # e98874 does exactly what you're looking for, has a maximum carrying capacity of 500-lbs, and will fit into 2" x 2" trailer hitch receivers.

  • Will the etrailer Cargo Carrier Part # e98874 Block the Taillights on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I have attached an etrailer Cargo Carrier part # e98874 on a similar 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee as yours.. I found that the carrier while folded down will not interfere with the visibility of the license plate or taillights. The carrier while folded up in the upright storage position will block the license plate partially but there is really no way around this aside from relocating the plate. You can add lights to the carrier using both part # e98943-44LED should you require additional lighting.

  • 2019 Subaru Outback Tongue Weight w/ 24x60 etrailer e98874 Cargo Carrier
In the owner's manual after several readings, I found that Subaru mentions that the trailer's tongue weight should be between 8-11% of the trailer weight, not to exceed 200 lbs. Minus the packaging, the # e98874 etrailer 24x60 cargo carrier weighs just below 50 lbs, so this would leave you a bit more than 150 lbs of cargo capacity on the carrier without exceeding the tongue weight capacity mentioned by Subaru. I've linked you to a product description video featuring the carrier you'd...

The etrailer Cargo Carrier part # e98874 would be an excellent option that would have clearance to fold up on your 2005 Winnebago Minnie 22R. When folded up this carrier has 9-1/2 inches from the center of the pin hole to the nearest rail so it would clear by 2-1/2 inches when folded. I attached a review video for more info as well.

  • High Weight Rated Folding Cargo Carrier Recommendation
All of our cargo carriers are rated for a certain amount of weight carried on paved roads. When you introduce rough back roads or trails that would be significantly rougher than what most travel on the capacity for the carriers becomes less defined. The highest rated folding cargo carrier we offer that folds would be the etrailer brand Cargo Carrier part # e98874 which has a 500 lb capacity. If you are only planning to carry around 300 lbs and take it very easy on the rough roads you would...

  • Can a Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Be Used At the Same time as a 5th Wheel?
As long as you have room yses you can absolutely use a hitch mounted cargo carrier like the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # e98874 with your 5th wheel connected. These generally sit pretty low so I don't think you'd run into any clearance issues front to back, but since this is pretty wide at 60" you may run into lateral clearance issues. Worse case scenario, you can put this cargo carrier on the back of your 5th wheel and you'd be good to go.
