Note: This is not rated for use on the back of an RV or motorhome.
This cargo carrier lets you transport your gear on the back of your vehicle. It tilts down for cargo area access even when it's loaded with gear, and you can fold it up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. It has raised side rails that help contain your gear and provide tie-down points, and the steel mesh floor offers stability for your cargo.
The carrier tilts down - even when it's loaded with gear - so you can easily access your vehicle's rear cargo area. Before you tilt the carrier make sure your cargo is strapped down and secure. Simply support the front edge with one hand, remove the pins (standard 5/8" or 16 mm diameter 2" hitch pins) located in the upper and center shank holes, and gently lower the carrier.
When the carrier is not being used, you can fold it up against the back of your vehicle. This lets you fit into your garage and other tight parking spaces without removing the basket. To fold the basket up, just remove the pin from the center shank hole, fold the rack up toward your vehicle, then reinsert the pin into the bottom shank hole.
The carrier has raised side rails that help keep your cargo in place. The rails also provide multiple anchor points for a cargo net, bungee straps, or other tie-downs.
The shank on this carrier is raised to improve ground clearance, and to make it easier for you to load and unload your cargo. It also extends the basket away from your vehicle, which helps prevent contact with your bumper or rear-mounted spare tire when the carrier is folded up.
The carrier is easy to assemble. Simply bolt it together with the included hardware. The basket is made of heavy-duty steel with a rust-resistant black powder coat finish, and it has an easy-to-clean mesh floor. You can add a light kit (sold separately), which is required if your gear blocks your vehicle's tail lights.
The stop collar automatically aligns the pin holes on the shank and your hitch every time you install the carrier. It prevents you from having to get on your hands and knees to check for pinhole alignment. It's quick and easy to install, just slide the collar onto the shank, insert the carrier into your hitch, align the pin holes, slide the collar up against your hitch, and tighten down the bolt with included hand knobs. Once it's set up you never have to adjust it again.
An anti-rattle hitch pin is included for securing the carrier to the hitch receiver. Align the hole in the shank with the hole in your vehicle's hitch, insert the pin into the hole, and secure with the clip. This will reduce noise and movement of the carrier in your hitch.

This was due to loose parts in the box getting wedged between the wire mesh and frame member putting leverage / prying on the tack weld causing it to fail. This put some dents in the wire mesh at well. Plastic cap on the end of the main frame was also damaged. Better thought and effort put into packaging would go a long way. Also, the shipment is missing all cotter pins.
This carrier worked out great. The tilt down feature is helpful to have but I didn't really need it. However, the fold up feature was helpful when driving around, so I recommend that as a convenience.
The only thing I had trouble with was the hitch bolt. I have a Thule bike rack that I've used with my truck hitch receiver and never had a problem, but this rack's hitch bolt was a real pain to get in at first. Don't be dismayed. With the rack off of the vehicle, I used some WD-40 and some lithium grease on the bolt and then used an adjustable wrench to screw it in and out a number of times. I noticed a bunch of either paint or metal shards gumming up the threads on the bolt each time I removed it. After about 5 times of screwing it in and out, wiping off the bolt with a towel, adding some more grease once in a while, it got to the point that I could screw it in and out by hand pretty easily. Problem solved.
I'm really happy with this rack. It fit two big coolers of food and beer plus beach umbrellas and other stuff. It's really strong and sturdy. The biggest issue was not the weight on the rack, but whether the rear suspension on the Highlander could hold it with our other junk in the back plus passengers. :-)

Its been a year since I purchased this and I used it on another vacation, driving through multiple states. Its very sturdy and I continue to be pleased with this purchase. I will say I had some trouble with the hitch bolt again. It was impossible to screw in by hand and using an adjustable wrench is a tedious chore. I didnt have time before leaving on the trip to do what I did the last time wd-40lithium. It would be nice to have a better locking system...something other than a bolt that screws in. Ill have to look for that. All things considered, Im still happy with this rack and I would still recommend it. Im sure Im going to be using this for many more years.
This will work on a Jeep Library if you add a hitch extension. I welded an 7” extension to the receiver opening. (No rattling) If you weld it, make sure it’s level or the carrier won’t be. With the spare on the back of my Jeep the carrier wouldn’t fold up. Does now with room to go. I have a Motorhome and this is my tow vehicle. Carrier is used mainly for bikes.
I was tired of booking up my small boat trailer with spare in the way. Now ball is accessible. This is a well built carrier. Doesn’t move or rattle at all. Thanks etrailer.

As you can see, my previous review it it it is primarily used for bicycles on trips on my tow vehicle. Hav used it only once in that capacity since I got it because of this Covid lockdown. Worked very good. Used occasionally on the Liberty for carrying large bags of pet food, topsoil, etc. when I’m not using a pickup. No complaints about this carrier.
Super disappointed in this etrailer purchase. The product came in a large box that was fully intact and not damaged. The actual cargo basket was meticulously wrapped and appeared to be brand new as expected. The other components however, like the arm, were in boxes that were smashed, old, worn, and had multiple layers of old tape. The arm itself was scratched and banged up, even rusty in spots. Clearly it was used or had been a returned item. If I wanted a dented, gouged, and rusty Cargo Carrier I would have purchased one used, for half the price. This is not the quality I expect from etrailer.. I have purchased many racks and other items from this company and usually the quality is outstanding. This time they dropped the ball. I have since read other reviews and it is apparent that this is not an isolated incident. I'd have sent it back if it wasn't so damn heavy and awkward to lug around.

I appreciate the pictures and it looks good on the back of your Jeep. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to to you.
I have to say that this has been a great cargo carrier. I can fit everything I need in it. It has taken all the abuse of the weather, and it still looks new and still works great. If you are looking for a cargo carrier this is the one you want.
Great luggage rack! 4,500 miles in 3 weeks on the first trip and it performed exactly as intended. It didn't sag or rattle. We used a Rola bag with ratchet straps for extra stability. We loaded luggage, too many other bags and fishing gear for a family of four. Better than buying a bigger vehicle. As the picture shows, it also makes a great tailgate/table for fishing or camping.

The luggage rack worked well until the hitch receiver bolt sheared off when I tried to unscrew. We then needed to cut the shank and the receiver from the truck. I was told the replacement part I needed would not be sold to me individually and I would need to buy a complete luggage rack. I offered to buy it and did not ask for a free replacement. I was also told the product has a lifetime warranty but that the warranty would not be honored because I cut it from my hitch receiver. That doesnt make sense. Why would an American company not offer the part that needs to be replaced? This is the USA. We fix what needs to be fixed instead of just buying another one. I am very disappointed. Now Ill need to find an American company that will produce the replacement part. Maybe etrailer will help before its too late. I really hope so.
Absolutely unacceptable experience with Etrailer. What was a quick turn around and delivery of a cargo carrier that was ordered late on a Friday and delivered on Tuesday quickly turned into an awful experience.
One of the four bolts and corresponding washers and lock nut that is required to keep the two halves of the basket together was missing. No big deal, call them up Tuesday evening and was assured they would send out a new parts kit first thing in the morning. No shipping updates on Wednesday or Thursday. Had to call again on Thursday evening to find out what was going on. I was told it could take another 7 days to be delivered! Absolutely unacceptable! They must have rushed the shipping as it was delivered on Saturday evening.
Open the box to find that they failed to pack any lock nuts! What good are the bolt and washers you sent if I can’t secure them with the lock nut?! Go back and listen to the tape from my original call and the one on Thursday where I very clearly stated what was missing. Get your act together etrailer, this level of QA is absolutely unacceptable. Buyers beware of their poor QA.
I will never recommend etrailer to friends and family.
I bought this to haul stuff from the east coast of the US to Alaska. I didn't go direct - over 5000 miles with this. On some not so good roads along the way. It was rock solid. The tub with my stuff in it weighed 130lbs.
Heavier than I expected! Quite sturdy! Easy to put together. I needed to buy a 15/16" socket for the hitch pin/bolt. It comes with a hitch pin collar so I need to return the one I ordered.
Was a little bit rough near the end of the instructions trying to figure out where a threaded bolt with a cotter pin needed to go due to the small images but eventually put 2 and 2 together and got it attached. It's the pin that connects it to your receiver just in case someone else runs into the same conundrum.
Holds all my gear. Just what I was hoping for. Now my dogs have the car all to themselves.
Really bummed that there are "Made in China" stickers all over it. I went with etrailer because I thought they were a USA company. I guess no one can turn down that cheap slave labor. Hopefully my gear does not end up on the highway.

etrailer.com IS a US company with our headquarters located in Wentzville, MO about 40 miles west of St. Louis. The carrier is manufactured for us overseas in China.
Easy to mount, well designed to fold up into a closed position when not in use, fits over the gate door mounted spare tire when closed, and carries a lot of weight when in use. Can’t ask for more.
Excellent product! Fast shipping. Will go great with new cargo carrier. Stretches and has multiple hooks to tie down.
We really like the concept of this cargo Rack. It folds up to sit flat and it sits back far enough so we can get the doors of our Sprinter. The down side and the thing that has us most concerned is that it wont sit level when in the loading and travel position. In fact it seems to tilting back more and more with age. We do not over load it I am guess but I don’t think we ever put more that about 200 lbs on it. Also it seems to be rusting a bit from the inside but then we do live in the NW where is rains a lot. I have inclosed some pictures below
Well worth the money. Arrived on time very well packaged. High quality hardware, everything HEAVY DUTY. I’m loading it up with as many coolers and beach gear I can attach to it. I’m 100% pleased. It is THE cargo carrier to buy!
Receiver arm snapped 10 miles into the trip. It looks like the arm was made of cast iron which would explain why it couldn't handle the 200lb generator. I would not recommend this product to carry anything more than folding chairs until the manufacturer quits using cast iron.

Honestly this is very unusual for this to happen. Customer Service will be in touch with you to have this carrier returned.
Decent trailer. Haven't used it much but it has been well worth it.
Bought this as a slightly used product from etrailer.com and it worked great for Holiday travel. Fits our Subaru Ascent perfectly & provides that little added space we needed without putting on our roof box. Only disappointment was the parts bag was not sealed and parts were everywhere in the box with 2 missing washers (easily replaced) …see pics. Product is sturdy and no sway like stated by etrailer description.
Solid and well made carrier. Can’t wait to use it for our vacation!
After searching for one of these and finding them I chose to go with this one, "Made In The USA" rather than one "Made In China." The price difference was $5.00! That's all! I have had BAD experiences with items made in China. Workmanship is sub-par to say the least. I purchased this one and could not be happier with it! Quality is awesome, works flawlessly and is a great bang for the buck. If you're looking for a cargo carrier for your hitch/receiver buy THIS one! Shipping was quick also!!! E-Trailer is a great dealer with QUALITY products!!
Product iss great! Used this carrier in combination with the etrailer cargo bag (Item #988501) on our 13 hour trip from IL to beaches of SC and never heard or felt it.
I didn't realize that this carrier hitch has a threaded hitch pin for anti-rattle, so I didn't have to use my standard hitch anti-rattle device. The assembly and installation were pretty easy and the included hitch collar made subsequent attachments to my hitch a breeze. While the included wrenches we ok, I would recommend using a socket wrench as it is much more suited for the job.
I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that my 2014 GMC Acadia hatch had just enough clearance to open without using the tilt feature. BTW, the tilt feature on a loaded carrier definitely requires more than one person.
Only con I can think of is that the pins for the folding feature do not slide in very easily, maybe because the holes don't line up perfectly. It definitely takes some twisting of the pins at the same time as fiddling withe the angle of the carrier to get the pin thru. It is do-able, but takes some "practice" for sure.
EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE NOTE:
After our trip I was looking for a locking hitchpin (item #e99047) and noticed that the price of the carrier was about $30 less than when I originally purchased a month earlier. etrailer does have a competitor price match guarantee policy, but nothing specific to etrailer branded products. I asked them about this and they immediately refunded the price difference. Regardless of if the had done this, I still would have purchased the locking hitchpin, but this proves their excellence in customer service.
The cargo trailer showed up within four days of purchasing online. The hardware package was 100% complete and it was very easy to put together. I am astonished that they could offer free shipping and this cargo carrier for the price. Thank you for over delivering on expectations. I would certainly do business with etrailer again without hesitation.
We have used a few times for excess luggage runs from one side of Colorado and bac.
Step 1 of assembly, the holes do not line up between the basket halves and the connecting bars. This is integral to the structure’s assembly, making it impossible to do. That and the hardware was loose all over the package but luckily seemed to all be there by chance. Seems there was no QA before shipping…makes me quite nervous about installing this on my vehicle.

I would start both screws with your fingers so that it is finger-tight, then torque them intermittently so that they are both tightened in the same degree. If you tighten one bolt all of the way, then do the next, it may not end up straight.
