Solution for Covering Rust on Scraped Trailer Hitch

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/29/2025

Question:

We bought a trailer hitch and were very happy with it. Unfortunately, it scraped the end of our driveway when we pulled out. Now there is a little rust spot. Do you have any advice for how to stop the rusting? Should we sand it down? Put on some touch up paint? Or something else? Thanks!

Hey Valerie, so this is a pretty common problem and what I would recommend is put some Rust Reformer spray paint on the rust spot. This is designed to stop the spread of rust and cover/protect the metal. I've used this on similar projects and it works well without having to mess with sanding etc. What are you using the hitch for?

Hey Valerie, how did things go after you used the Rust Reformer spray paint on your hitch? Did it stop the rust from spreading? Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same issue.

@JamesonC We never did put on the rust reformer spray, so there is no update. We do not use the hitch very often and now it is stored in our shed. Thanks.
