Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with the split reel and a 2,000 pound rated capacity. Now, this is a worm gear winch, it's designed for horizontal pulling and vertical lifting applications. You can see, you can crank one direction, that's to lift, the other direction to lower, and the load will automatically hold when the reel stops turning. It is a split and reel design, so it allows for simultaneous operation of two lines from opposite directions for greater versatility. The loop drive right here you can see, this allows the winch to be mounted out of reach and can be operated with a long shepard hook or a variable speed electric drill to crank the winch.
It does use laminated high carbon steel gears, which are heat treated for longer life. The gear ratio on this winch is 40 to 1. It is a nice, heavy-gauge embossed steel base for extra strength, has a nice powder coat copper bronze finish to it, and the bearings, they use permanently lubricated bearings on the drive shaft, which are maintenance free. This part is made in the USA. Few specs again on this, the rated capacity is 2,000 pounds, maximum cable length that'll fit on this, if it's a 7/32 diameter cable, will be about 82 feet, 1/4 inch diameter cables, about 59 feet, and then the 9/32 diameter, it's about 49 feet or about 24 1/2 feet per side.
Does come with a nice owner's manual to describe how this operates. But that should do it for the review on this Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with the split reel and a 2,000 pound rated capacity..

I am only using this to lift 150-200 lbs, taking a topper off and on my truck. It works great, but I switched the loop for a hex drive. A bit of warning, I managed to burn up the motor on a $200 Ridgid 18V drill. For some reason I didn't have issues with my cheaper Ridgid drill, but still something to be aware of.
A great hand winch. I’m using two, one to llift a lawn roller and the other to lift a lawn aerator into the rafters in the garage when not in use to open up some floor space. I swapped out the loop drive for the hex drive to speed up the lifting process. They have no problems lifting either of these lawn tools because neither weighs more than 100 lbs. one concern I have is that there is no way to secure the cable to the drum. The instructions show 3holes in the drum to loop the cable through and back onto itself. The drums I have have only one hole. Running the cable over itself seems to be working, but I would feel more confident if it was secured better. Rather than just friction holding the cable in.
High quality tool. Only disappointed that the photo and description did not adequately describe the model that was shipped. It showed a detachable loop drive and indicated that a drill could be used with it. However the loop is welded on and an additional connection will need to be made to use a drill to drive it. Otherwise seems like the perfect winch for lifting. Good service and shipping, quick answer to my question regarding shipping.
I purchased two of the DL10954 units to hang a Kayak and Paddleboard above my vehicle in my garage.
The units were heavy duty, much more than I expected.
I have added some pictures of my installation. Now anyone in the family can lower them and get to them when needed.

I purchased the Dutton-Larson Hand Winch-Worm Gear to use on my 20ton Hydraulic Press that I fabricated as a hobby. I replaced the Loop Drive with the Hex Drive. What I love
About this winch is how smooth it operates, it’s quiet with no fumbling with latches to unlock. The best part it’s made in the USA. I can use a speedhandle or a cordless drill to lift or lower the bed to accommodate my tooling.
