While you certainly could use a worm gear winch such as # DL11001, I recommend using the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10976, which is designed for what you are trying to do. This winch can be mounted to your ceiling and you can use Hex Shaft # DL406102 which will allow a drill to crank it, and you'll also want Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24045. This winch has a capacity of 2,000 lbs which will be more than enough for your 300 lbs of gear.
