Video Transcript for FAQ How To Drain And Clean Water Heater

Today we're gonna walk you through, and I'm gonna show you how to drain, clean and descale your hot water heater tank. There's four steps that you're gonna need to take when draining your hot water heater. The first is going to be make sure you shut off all water sources and let your hot water heater cool down. Along with that, you're gonna need to turn off all of the power sources leading to your, or the switches leading to your hot water heater. So there's gonna be usually a switch on the outside on the hot water heater and then a switch on the inside by your control panel. The third thing you're gonna need to do is switch off or switch on your pressure relief valve, which you can normally just pull slowly.

You can see water coming out. Just hold that until water is no longer coming out. You wanna leave it open. And now we're ready to take off the plug at the bottom. So to remove it, usually it's going to be an inch and one 16th socket, but yours may be a little different, so you just have to get the right socket for you.

And then just slowly open it up. We're not gonna have any back pressure on this plug because our pressure release valve is open. Another indication that you need to rinse out your tank is that you can actually see the scaling in the bottom of our bucket here. This is our anode rod. Our anode rod is just about shot which is why you see all this residue coming out of the actual tank itself.

The anode rod is designed to take the brunt force of the actual calcium buildup and the buildup on the inside. It's designed to attack this and not your tank itself. This is definitely gonna be something that we're gonna need to replace. Now with our tank completely emptied out, we want to take a tank rinsing wand. It's just gonna be like a quarter inch thick or a quarter inch of diameter wand and we're gonna stick it up inside the tank itself.

And you'll notice at the end of the tank wand, we have these available on our website, at the end of our tank wand, there's going to be a slight bend in it and that's so that you can actually spin the hose and it'll direct the water in different directions on the inside. So let's stick that in. We did clean our bucket out so we know how much more we are going to actually clean out of this with this. Oh my gosh. There's all kinds of stuff coming out of there. This is just going to an extra cleaning measure that you can do to get some more of that scaling out of the inside. So let the rest of that drain out. And again, you can see there's quite a bit. I think we actually got more this time than we did when we actually took the plug out. Now, when we go to put our vinegar and water solution into our hot water heater, we're gonna go ahead and re insert the old anode rod for the cleaning part because we're gonna have to take it out again, anyway and then we're gonna take the new anode rod, which by the way, this is what they're supposed to look like. We're gonna put the new anode rod in after we've got it all rinsed out for the second time. So we'll just thread our anode rod back in and start filling our tank. So our solution that we have here is going to be four parts vinegar, and two parts water. We've already got our three parts of vinegar in there and we'll go ahead and add our fourth. We'll take this hand pump that we have here at each trailer, stick it on our solution and then connect it to our city water connection. Sure it's getting tight. And then we'll start pumping the solution into the hot water heater. And we did test this out earlier. Soon as we pumped water into the city water connection we started getting water flowing out of the hot water heater. That's how we know what's going in there. Once you have your solution pumped in, you can remove this. You can also use the water pump itself on your camper, the same way that you we're to pump the antifreeze through your system. You just wanna make sure you run that vinegar solution all the way through to your hot water heater. You wanna let this sit overnight and then you'll come back to it the next morning and you'll drain it back out and rinse it real good again. We're gonna go ahead and show you how to do that now but that's just to show you the whole process. Now, if you want to deeper clean, we've seen many different people that will actually turn their water heater on which is going to heat up the water and vinegar solution. We've seen just as good results with just putting the solution in and letting it kind of eat away at all that grime on the inside of the tank. So that's up to you. But then removing it is gonna be the same as draining your tank. You just remove this plug, and just take your anode out. Now you can see here, we have a consistent flow coming out. We turned our water pump back on and it's just going to be pumping fresh water from our fresh water tank, through the hot water heater tank to get that vinegar solution out of there. Now, what you can do, you can put your anode rod back in, fill your tank back up and then drain it all the way down again if you still have that vinegar solution smell in there. You could also reconnect your city water and just run it through that way. Now, once you've done your final drain, you wanna put your anode rod or your plug back in place. Then make sure your pressure relief valve is still open and then turn on your water pump or connect your city water connection. What'll happen is you're filling up your water heater as we speak and then water is going to start coming out of your pressure relief valve. You you'll start to hear some air hissing, but essentially what you're doing is you're filling the tank up, getting the air out, and that's how you know your tank is full is when water comes out of here. So now that we've got water coming out of this here, we can shut that off and we're ready to use our hot water heater again. I hope this video was helpful. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them in the comments below and we'll see you next time..

Right product at the low price is hard to beat. Good job guys.

by:

Reasonable prices. Product arrived in a timely manor. Product I could not find locally.

by:

Seems to be doing its job. Very pleased.

by:

Well worth the money. Especially when you can barely get a wrench back there to take the factory plug off just to drain the tank.

by:

This is an awesome product. Works great and I've been using it over a year.

by:

Fit perfectly and performed as expected

by:

Working great, so far. I like that it has the release valve so I can drain the tank.

by:

Drain is a joke took out Petcock and plugged

by:

Not what I thought it was. For Atwood water heater and I have a suburban. However, it looks like a quality made device.

by:

I added a 3/4 "to 1/2" brass bushing works fine

by:

Exactly what i needed. In my case I had to remove the drain valve part so I could use a socket to install the anode, then reinstalled the valve.

by:

I burnt up the electric element in my old rv as I thought I had changed the bypass valve back and had not. 2 hr to change the element. using this I know there is water inside.

by:

This will save lots of time when winterizing my travel trailer. Last spring I thought I had filled the heater when I flushed out the anti freeze but had not. When I turned on electric heater with no water the element burnt out .What a pain to change

by:

Great way to drain an RV water heater and retain the anti corrosion protection of an anode rod. Use adequate teflon tape to seal the threads. 5 min installation.

by:

Easy install and great exact fit.

  • Is There An Anode Rod For A Suburban 6 Gallon Water Heater With A Drain Valve?
Hello David, I can definitely point you in the right direction. I will first need a bit more info from you in order to recommend the correct anode rod for your Suburban water heater. • Replacement Anode Rod for Suburban SW10DE Water Heater
The correct Camco anode rod for your Suburban SW10DE water heater is part # CAM11563. You can confirm beforehand simply by comparing dimensions. This aluminum rod measures 3/4-inch diameter and 9-1/2-inches long. Aluminum anodes will tend not to cause the odors in your hot water that can arise with magnesium anodes. Many plumbers prefer magnesium anodes because they produce a stronger current making them more effective at keeping the water tank from corroding. Aluminum rods collect a buildup...

  • Recommended Anode Rod For RV Water Heater Based On Material
Both metals help to protect your tank. There are only a few people that have a preference and it is normally based on aluminium being lower on the Galvanic Scale than magnesium so it produces less driving current between the anode and cathode (tank). They believe that this means aluminum doesn't do as good a job protecting the tank sides as well as magneisum. You will find that plumbers will use either one on home or RV systems. My recommendation is to go with the mangesium anode like...
