Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - A-6 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at Part Number A-6, this is the CURT two and five-sixteenth inch trailer hitch ball. A few measurements to go over with you real quick. This hitch ball is going to give us a shank diameter of an inch and a quarter, it's going to give us a shank length measuring from the bottom of the platform to the end of the threads of two and five-eighths of an inch. This is designed to fit draw bar thicknesses of a half inch to one inch thick. The hitch ball is going to offer a capacity of ten thousand pounds. It's made from a solid steel construction with a nice chrome finish on it, so it is going to stand up really well against rusting and corrosion. Here on the sides of the platform, it's going to have the flats, these are just your wench flats, makes for an easier installation, you can get your wrench around there for a nice, adequate grip.

Really going to come in handy when you need to torque this down. The hitch ball will need to be torqued to specifications listed by the manufacturer. You can find all that information on the tag that's going to come attached to the trailer hitch ball. You just want to make sure that you remove this tag before your installation. Really simple installation though. The hitch ball is going to go straight through that opening on your ball mount.

You're going to place on the lock washer as well as the nut, and then you're going to get everything tightened down, and again once you get it hand tight, or once you get it tight with a wrench, you will need to go ahead and torque it down to the specifications listed by the manufacturer. It looks like for this particular mount, it says to tighten the trailer ball to four hundred and fifty foot pounds of torque. That's going to do it for our review of Part Number A-6, this is the CURT two and five-sixteenth inch trailer hitch ball. .

  • What Torque Rating Should the Trailer Hitch Ball # A-6 be Tightened To
I spoke with my contact at CURT and he informed me that this 2-5/16 inch Trailer Hitch Ball # A-6 will need to be torqued to 450 ft/lbs. I attached FAQ on hitch balls for you to check out also.

  • What is the Torque Spec for a Nut on a 1-7/8 Inch Hitch Ball
The torque value for your 1-7/8 inch ball is going to depend on the diameter of the shank. Draw-Tite lists the following torque specs: "During hitch ball installation, torque all 3/4" shank diameter balls to 160 ft. lbs., and 1" shank diameter balls to 250 ft. lbs., and 1-1/4" shank diameter balls to 450 ft. lbs."

  • Trailer Hitch Ball Wrench Size and Torque Rating for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Ball Shank Size
You can have a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball on either a 1 inch or 1-1/4 inch shank. The nut on a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank takes a wrench with a 1-7/8 inch socket. A hitch ball with a 1 inch shank will take a wrench with a 1-1/2 inch socket. You will need to torque all hitch balls with a 1-1/4 inch shank, like 2-51/6 inch hitch ball # A-6, down to 450 ft/lbs. I am including a link to some helpful trailer hitch ball information, if needed.

The one that throws a wrench in the this is the 1-7/8 inch ball, like the Curt # A-80. With it being so close to 2 inches, it will definitely make differentiating...

  • Recommended Ball Mount for 8 Inch Drop and 7,500 to 10,000 Capacity
The Draw-Tite Ball Mount for 2" Hitch - 7" Rise, 8" Drop - 9-1/2" Long - 12,000 lbs # 4283 is the closest we have to what you are looking for in a fixed mount. It has an 8 inch drop, 12K capacity, 1-1/4 inch hitch ball hole diameter, and 7/8 inch thick mount. The smaller diameter holes and thinner mount will leave you with only a 5K capacity. For a 2 inch ball, I recommend # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # A-6. Let me know if you have questions or need a recommendation for that 5K...

  • Will Curt Hitch Ball # A-6 Work with a Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System # BXW0751
The hitch balls we recommend for this Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System, part # BXW0751, have a shank length of either 2-3/4-inches (part # 19286 with a 2-5/16-inch ball size) or 2-5/8-inch (part # A-90, with a 2-inch ball size). The ball you ordered, part # A-6, also has a 2-5/8-inch long shank, so it should work with your Blue Ox SwayPro.

  • Will Curt Hitch Ball # A-6 Work on Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System RP66559
Yes, the Reese Steadi-Flex weight distribution system part # RP66559 that you referenced takes a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank that is 2-5/8 inches long just like the part # A-6 so it would work well. Also this has the same 10k capacity as the Steadi-Flex.

  • Is a Weight Distribution System or Sway Control Needed for 3,500lb Trailer with Chevy Silverado 3500
Considering the towing capacity of your Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and the relatively light 3,500 pound Casita Trailer, you most likely will not need a weight distribution system or sway control. I recommend simply going on a few test drives with your trailer to see how everything handles. If after a few trips, you feel like the control and stability of the ride can be improved upon, a weight distribution system might be a good idea. If you do end up looking for a weight distribution system,...

The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # C17499 will allow a rise of up to 6-1/2 inches so it will work well for you. The shank will need to be inverted for the rise position and you will put the hardware in the 3rd and 5th holes from the top when inverted. You will need to torque the hitch ball and the shank to the manufacturer specs, so if you don't have the ability to do that on your own, I recommend going to a local mechanic...

  • Best Way to Reduce Suspension Sag When Towing a Trailer
We have the perfect product for you, but it's not a suspension enhancement system as they are more ideal for vehicles that are carrying weight in the cargo area of the vehicle. For a towing situation a weight distribution system would be much better as it actually distributes the tongue weight of the trailer up to the front axle of the tow vehicle which will help with braking and handling. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Setup for a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Towing a Coachman Viking
To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Based on your Coachman Viking trailer gross weight of 3,538 pounds and tongue weight on your trailer could be as much as 353-531 pounds (10-15 percent tongue weight), the weight distribution setup I recommend...

It is also very cost effective considering the features it presents. The only thing you'll need to be up and running is the correct size hitch ball, part # A-90 for 2" or part # A-6 for 2-5/16". • Is Weight Distribution Needed for 2018 Chevy Colorado Towing Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1900RD
The general rule of thumb is that if your trailer weighs at least half of what the tow vehicle weighs, then the use of a weight distribution system is recommended. This applies regardless of whether the vehicle is equipped with air bags or not, since they serve different purposes. From my research, your 2018 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 2.8L Diesel, has a curb weight between 4,028 lbs and 4,476 lbs. Therefore, I highly suggest incorporating one to your set-up. For the weight capacity, you do not technically need a weight distribution system.
