Expert Answers about Pilot Automotive

  • Are Additional Lights Needed when Towing a Car on a Tow Dolly that Has Lights
  • Additional lights are not typically required when using a tow dolly but you would want to check the laws in the states you will be traveling in to be sure. A lot of people want to use them any way for more visibility of the vehicle, which isn't a bad idea. Since your trailer connector is already in use with the tow dolly lights, you would have to splice into the tow dolly wiring to power the additional lights. In that situation, a wireless system like # NV-5164 would not work. You would...

  • Where Do the Bully Black Bull Side Steps, # BBS-1103, Install on a Truck
  • The Bully Black Bull Side Steps, # BBS-1103, will actually mount to the vehicle rocker panels, not the frame. Many steps like this and the longer types as well install on the rocker panels on many vehicles. The rocker panels do provide a secure attachment point.

  • Integrated OEM Tailgate Lock LH-007 Installation Requirements and Durability
  • To install tailgate lock # LH-007, you will need a 30mm torque bit or ratchet, and a 8mm socket to remove and re-install retention nuts and screws. Though the design of the lock places the locking strength on one side of the handle, the zinc-coated steel locking mechanism and OEM style plastic make this lock very durable, and, as my contact at Pilot confirmed, tampering should not be an issue. The tailgate lock would be the best option we offer for locking your vehicle while using...

  • Brake and Tail Light Trailer Hitch Cover that Operates with Turn Signals
  • The Pilot Automotive Brake and Tail Light Receiver Cover, # CR-007A will only light up with the brake pedal and the tail lights. The tail light feature is fed by the brown wire, so severing that wire would alter the cover so that it will not light up when the headlights or running lamps are on. For a lighted hitch cover that will operate along with the turn signals, I would recommend part # CR-007XL. The running light portion could also be disabled as described above. If you scroll...

  • How to Replace Step Pads on Running Boards
  • Most step pads on nerf bars/tube steps are installed using metal clips that grip the plastic post on the step pad and then in turn lock into the hole on the step itself. These clips are typically included and Pilot Replacement Step Pad # NB-PAD2 has them too. These clips have tabs that stick out (please see the linked photo) and these can usually be gently bent with a flat-blade screwdriver to allow them to pop out of the step. Examples of these barrel clips include parts # 23-0002 and...

  • Replacement Tube Step Pad that has 5 Pins and is 21 Inches Long and 3 Inches Wide
  • It sounds like you need replacement step pad # 23-0001. It is 21 inches long, 3 inches wide, and the pin measurements are nearly identical. I say nearly because as you can see in the picture I have included they are not exactly the same. But as you know the pins can be hard to measure perfectly so there is a little wiggle room for the measurements. You will also need 5 barrel clips, # 23-0002. The clips are sold as singles so you will need to change the quantity to 5.

  • Bull Bars/Grille Guards for 2014 Toyota Tacoma That Do Not Require Removal of Factory Skid Plate
  • All of the bull bars and grille guards offered for your 2014 Toyota Tacoma will require removal of the factory skid plate for installation. However, the skid plate may be re-installed after some necessary trimming to accommodate the mounting points for the bull bar. Westin offers their Ultimate Bull Bar in both chrome-plated-steel, part # 32-1600, and in black powder-coat finish on steel, part # 32-1605. My contact there confirmed these will fit your 2014 Tacoma. The installation instructions...

  • Is there a 6-Way Round to 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector Adapter
  • The only 6-Way round to 5-Way flat adapter that we carry is # TC-129 that you have referenced. The other option is to make an adapter using a trailer side 6-Way # PK11604 and a vehicle side 5-Way flat, # 20016. Cut it to the length needed and wire it in to match your trucks 6-Way. I have included a link to our wiring FAQ that shows the various trailer connectors for you.

  • How Does the Tow Strap Cinch Bone BC-902 Fit on a Strap
  • There is more than 1 way to use the Cinch Bone, # BC-902, with a recovery strap. But, you are correct, the strap does not go through the center slot of the Cinch Bone. There is a retention cable that comes with the bone that does go through the slot. The recommended method is to first loop the strap through the clevis hook or tie down point and push some of the slack of the long end of the strap through the looped strap end. You will form a loop with the strap you passed through the...

  • Is the Install of the Bully Round Bar Tube Steps # NB-1216X Difficult
  • Running boards like the Bully Round Bar # NB-1216X that you referenced are not overly difficult to install. Basically you end up bolting the hardware of the boards to the vehicle and then the bars to the hardware. I attached an install video that shows a similar set of steps on a different Ram truck for you to check out as well.

  • Attaching License Plate to Cargo Carrier
  • The legalities regarding a cargo carrier obscuring a rear license plate can vary widely by state. Your best bet would be to directly contact the State Police or Department of Transportation in the states in which you will be traveling. The Pilot 20x45 Cargo Carrier, part # CR-114N does not provide a dedicated place to attach a license plate. You could drill two holes through the rear rail in order to bolt the plate in place, or simply use zip-ties to temporarily attach the plate, if...

  • Lighted Trailer hitch Cover that has Tail Light, Brake Light, and Turn Signal Functions
  • Usually, people want the exact opposite; for it not to blink with either turn signal. The reason that it blinks with just the right turn signal is because the 4-Way connector for a trailer has combined brake and turn signals and only one wire and a ground is used to power the light, in this case the green right turn/brake light wire. For a lighted cover that has turn signal functions you could use # CR-007XL.

  • Wiring Harness is Needed to tow a Boat Trailer with Surge Brakes with a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica
  • You will not need a brake controller to tow a boat trailer with surge brakes. Surge brakes are actuated by an actuating coupler on the trailer, so all you will need is a trailer wiring harness for the lights and an electric lockout, if your actuating coupler has an electric lockout. You can tell if your actuating coupler has an electric lockout by looking at the trailer connector. If you have a 5-pin trailer connector, then you likely have an electric lockout on your coupler. If you have...

  • The Bully Adjustable Ladder Rack, part # CG-902, will require drilling to the rails of the truck bed on your 2007 Ford F-150 Super Cab. I have other ladder rack choices available that will not require drilling. I would recommend the TracRac Ladder Racks, part # TA27000-01. • How to Hardwire Pilot Automotive Tailgate LED Light Strip into 2008 Chevy Silverado
  • Before removing the 4-pole connector from the LED Light Strip, you should label each wire (see photo). You would then tap each wire into the proper circuit. The wiring harness that feeds the tail light assemblies or the harness that feeds the trailer connector would be a good point to access the correct circuits. You might need to use a circuit tester like part # 40376 to determine which circuit serves which function. The loose white wire would tap into the reverse lamp circuit, which...

  • Trailer Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Recommendation for Behind or In Front of a Pop Up Camper
  • You can use a cargo carrier like Pilot Automotive Hitch Cargo Carrier, # CR-114N, on the back of a pop up camper. You will need to make sure the cargo is secured using bungee straps, # 3044DAT, or a cargo net, # 7330, because there is a lot of bounce and movement at the back of a trailer that could jostle around the cargo. Also, you would want to make sure the camper had a frame mounted trailer hitch because they offer the most secure connection. If you are looking for something to have...

  • 7-Way to 4-Flat Trailer Connector Adapter for Volkswagen Touareg
  • We do have adapters that plug into a 7-Way on the vehicle and provide a 4-Way that can be used with the Round Tube Stainless Steel Trailer Hitch Receiver Step with LED Lights, # CR-600LED. We have some that are just 7 to 4-Way, and others that allow you to have both at the same time. I have included a link to all the 7 to 4-Way adapters below. The most economical is the Pollak 7 Pole to 4 Pole Connector Adapter, # PK12716. This is strictly a 7-Way to 4-Flat.

  • Replacement Step Pads for Nerf Bars on 2005 Dodge Ram Quad Cab
  • Thank you for including a photo of your tube steps for which you need replacement step pads. The measurement of the mounting posts (12-1/2-inches apart) is helpful too. Unfortunately without knowing the manufacturer of the bars I cannot be absolutely certain of the fit of replacement step pads. Somewhere on the bars there will be a manufacturer name and/or part number. We do offer several pads near your specified length, but these use 4, 5 or 6 posts for mounting, not two as yours do. Examples...

  • Solution for Newer Ford with Bulb Out Error Message When Using LED Hitch Cover
  • This is a problem we normally see with German vehicles when they try to tow a trailer with LED lights. The issue is that the lower amperage draw of the LED lights is just enough to confuse the vehicle that it is drawing too much and because of that it wants to tell you that you have a bulb out on your vehicle. Normally the fix for this is to use the # TR20141 which has diodes in it that increase the amperage draw to what an incandescent bulb would draw on a trailer which eliminates the...

  • How to Wire the Pilot Navigator Off-Road Light # NV-802C
  • There are two wire leads, red and black, on the Navigator Off Road Light # NV-802C. Red is for power, black is the ground. The black wire needs to have good metal to metal contact, preferably to the the truck frame or even the negative terminal on the battery. The red wire needs to be run to a 12V power source via a switch like, # D16740. This switch is meant to be used with a radiator fan, but would work perfectly for driving lights.

I took one of the CR-007XL lights out to that vehicle to show you how the light fits in the receiver see attached video.
