Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector - 30717

This product works as expected. There is not too much to the installation, just plug it in properly and mount the ground wire. I did not find an easy way to mount this to my wife's Odyssey, or to the trailer hitch (item# 75270). Luckily, I do prototype design and manufacturing. So I came up with my own solution. I designed and made my own bracket to mount the 7 pole to the trailer hitch. It works like a charm, and looks great! 387667

We only discovered this site recently and LOVE it. You don't have to know what you want, the questions lead you to exactly what you are needing. The item is of great quality, and as described. We can now swap from truck to jeep with our trailer, and simply without effort. We have found our new 'to go' store for our trailer shopping. Customer Service by the way, terrific, great communication, and very quick shipping. Really Great Experience, Highly recommend. 121873

Weve moved in the past year, our new home 250 miles away from our old one. We used the hitch a lot, did I say a lot? daily round trips, never had a single problem with it. Worked like a champ. Thanks

I was surprised how fast the shipping was and the price for the product was very reasonable. I did not mind that there was no mounting plate for the adapter because I wanted something that would hook up to the camper when I need to use it and then take it off afterwards. I know I will be coming to etrailer for any other trailer or camper needs that may come up. 193891

this connector along with the short L bracket and the mount bracket- gave me a nice connector to my hitch. Though I used the short connector and did have to slightly bend it to allow the 4 to 7 pole connector to fit. If Id bought the long L bracket-- It could have worked-- but bending a little worked well. 68963

This is a great product . The price was $18.00 dollars cheaper than some I found online. I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 pickup, this adapter will change the 4 pole( which is made on my truck) to a 7 pole( which is on the trailer I will be using). The product connected, and bolted up to my truck bumper very easy. E trailer is the best. 121019

I was wanting to pull an enclosed trailer that has 7 pole plug in, with my vehicle that only has 4 pole plug in, without messing with the wires at this time, so I ordered the 4 pole to 7 pole adapter for this purpose. When item arrived I plugged adapter in, checked lights and on my way I went. all the extra wiring is there when I decide to add a brake controller. Now I can unplug the adapter and still use my 4 pole plug in. The item was well put together with tight wiring, price was reasonable, the shipping was smooth and the website is outstanding with plenty of instructions, wiring diagrams and the how to videos are a real plus on wiring up trailers. Thanks for an informative website and great product. 222496

Has been working great since purchased and installed 3 months ago. Used for several different trailers and long distance trips. Easy to install. Had to be slightly creative with the attachment of the ground. Did not see a reason to have a ground on this portion since everything else is already grounded, however would not work without grounding to the frame. Only used the four way connection and taped remaining three back. Hope for good things to come with this produce. Highly recommend this product. 93648

This company sucks. I bought an adapter that didn't work. I had to pay someone $55 to fix this $30 part. I had to splice the 2 ground wires together in order for it to work. One of the ground wires wasn't connected to anything on one end. They claim I was suppose to hook up one of the ground wires, but there was nowhere to connect it to or instructions indicating how to hook it up. I will never buy anything from this company that doesn't care about their customers and cares only about ripping people off. I suggest going to another site. They have a great return policy and care about their customers. 423028

Comments

Dan, I understand it can be frustrating. Only the ground wire from the 7-way should be connected to a bare metal portion of your vehicle frame. For your convenience, heres a link to the illustration:

The only reason I did not give this a 5 star review is because of the solderless crimp connectors. Because of the connection being up under the back of the car with road grime spraying around up under there, I would think that you would want to use the heat shrink crimp connectors. That way you could seal the connection. Other that that everything else was good quality and worked perfectly. I personally cut off the connectors and used my own weather tight solution. [link] I am unable to find the pictures at the moment but will look and see if I can find them and add them later. 340173

You would think anyone dealing with trailer hitches and trailer wiring parts would stock this 4 pin to a 7 pin connector. I got tired of looking locally and ordered this connector on line through etrailer. My little trailer does not have trailer brakes and I can now use my 7 pin connector installed on my truck or use the 4 pin set-up with my car. What a great universal connector without having to rewire your vehicle or trailer. I would recommend this connector to anyone pulling a trailer, thanks etrailer. 347065

- 30717

by:

There was no splicing wires, it was plug-and-play, highly recommended, very easy installation 137304

- 30717

by:

Works great. Easy install. It's more sensitive to dirt than I expected, but that might be common to all trailer connections, I don't know. I noticed on a trip that my brake controller said NC (no connection), and I didn't have trailer brakes, which meant my blinkers probably hadn't been working, either. I got pretty worried, and looked at it and only saw just a little black gunk on one blade. But cleaning that small amount of black gunk off solved the problem. So far, so good! 338393

Comments

Thanks for your business and your review, Zach! Using dielectric grease like 11755 on your connections increases reliability and the life of the connection by preventing corrosion and sealing the connection.

The product did not come fully fabricated. When I connected to the trailer I could not get any signal to transfer through. So I took the item apart and the 4 pin ground was not connected to the 7 way ground. This meant I didn't get a closed circuit when connected. After stripping the ground wires and connecting them the product worked great. I would suggest buying if you know how to modify in order to connect the ground wires 46844

I ordered a wiring adapter on behalf of my daughter who has a habit of putting things off until the last minute. I found the item she needed and placed the order with only a two day window until the part was needed. It arrived on time and was PERFECT for her needs. I applaud etrailer for providing quality products with very good response to customers needs (even when they are not always reasonable). Great job. 441249

I received this purchase and was installing it the next day. Luckily I read the other reviews and saw that I HAD to attach the white ground cord that was sticking out of the harness. Upon looking, I found the white wire that comes out out of the flat 4 plug isn't attached to anything thus requiring the ground to be attached to the vehicle. All in all, I was very satisfied with this purchase. 178592

This is the first time I've ever ordered anything from this website and I am very happy with my purchase. We needed the item in a timely manner and therefore paid for 2nd day shipping. Unlike a lot of other websites, it actually came 2 days later! The adapter worked perfectly, was exactly as described, and is made with quality materials. I would highly recommend buying from etrailer.com. 210891

- 30717

by:

I bought this because I hated the flat four pole that just hung over the bumper. Drilled a 1 7/8 inch hole in my bumper with bimetal hole saw. Mounted nice and clean. Be sure to hook up the White ground wire to your frame. The ground wire from the flat four does not pass thru this connector. Also if need be you can still pull a trailer with a flat four pole just by unpluging it 467112

- 30717

by:

The adaptor was shipped almost immediately, but took longer to arrive than I had expected, if you need is quickly, ask for expedited shipping. The adaptor worked fine once I connected a seperate ground wire from the adaptor's white wire to a ground on my vehicle. Instructions/warning should be included noting that the 4-wire connectors ground does not pass through the adaptor. 138958

- 30717

by:

Good adapter Bought this adapter to convert from a 4-wire standard trailer plug to my Coleman pop-up camper 7-wire adapter. It works great! Just don't forget to attach the adapter's white ground wire to the vehicle frame, since the adapter does not make use of the ground return lead built into the 4-wire trailer plug. This is stated in the instructions, but easy to forget... 768

Product exactly as described, and exactly what I needed. My van is wired with a 4 pin connector(harness with factory plug-in purchased from Etrailer some time ago), but I occasionally need to tow a trailer that has the 7 pin connector. This will work perfectly. I really appreciate the additional documentation and support from Etrailer, as well as the super-fast shipping. 107666

- 30717

by:

This will be the 3rd connector that I have put on my van. Since I already had the flat 4 connector, installing this connector was a snap. The connector doesn't come with any mounting hardware and I needed to run to the hardware store and purchase 4 nuts and bolts to mount it. If this is your first mounting, you are probably also going to need to purchase a bracket. 151414

- 30717

by:

I ordered the four pole flat harness and the adapter to convert to a 7 pole RV plug. I initialed had problems which were attributed to a bad ground from my tow vehicle to my trailer. I was surprised at the quick response I received when I asked questions. All is now working and I am very happy with the products. I would highly recommend etrailer to any one. 321641

I actually ordered a trailer hitch, T-wiring harness, and 7 pin connector. Everything arrived in great condition in just a few days. Shipping was VERY fast (due to telephone ordering) and exceeded my expectations. I am very happy with the products, shipping, arrival condition, and installation support. I will definitely recommend etrailer.com to other people. 92151

The t-one harness for my Mazda pu truck was just what I needed to haul a 4 point trailer. The transistion wire harness from a 4 point to a 7 point made it a lot easier to haul a trailer with a 7 point hookup. The installation was very easy for both.I have no doubt this way will solve easy hookup from 4 or 7 point hookup.I am well covered for either. 362772

- 30717

by:

I havent used this towing, but as far as the install foes, I had the whole thing installed in about 45mins. It only took so long because my son was wanting to help and learn. Plus there was the brake controller install inside the cab. Other than that everything is plug and play. This is the easiest product I have put on my truck so far. 77197

The RV that I bought second hand, had the huge plug (which was not required because there were no electric brakes due to the RV being a lightweight pop-up). This adapter allowed immediate hook up with having to rewire anything. The cost was reasonable, delivery was fast and quality was excellent. What else can a consumer ask for? 389377

- 30717

by:

It is a great relief to get what you order and as fast as it arrived, I could not have expected any better results. The items ordered were good, I would like to see more "MADE IN THE USA", but it is difficult to find. I do like to shop USA. products when practical.. Very good experience ordering from ETRAILER. 327326

This product works well to adapt a 4 flat connector to a 7 pole connector. It's odd that is requires a second wire from the battery, though I'm sure there is a good reason for that. It's also odd that the ground wire (white) isn't actually connected to anything. It stops at the taped-off strain relief, and pulls out easily. 208160

This 7 point harness wired right in with my T1 connector and is great for hooking up to my camper, very easy to install! 102166

A fair price on an excellent product! I looked at several parts stores locally to no avail and then looked online and found this part which is exactly what I needed. Well put together of quality components, all in all a great product and anyone looking for these type of parts- have no fear of buying from this company! 280727

- 30717

The adapter I ordered was excellent, the two brackets I ordered to use with the adapter were excellent, but the hose clamp to attach the bracket was a piece of junk, I spent an hour trying to get it to work and the auto parts guys couldn't get it to work either, so I bought one of theirs. wasted a lot of time on it. 62168

I needed something to enable my 4 pin equipped Wrangler to power the ligts/turnsignals when I move the 7 pin equipped 16' car hauler. Now I can have lights/turn signals when I move the empty trailer around after dropping the Jeep off of it, no longer have to try to maneuver the trailer around with a 38' motorhome. 32050

Product was as described, fit like a glove and delivery was incredibly fast. But oh what amazes me the most, is a year after the purchase they actually followed up to see if I was still happy with the product. Our companies should take note, this is how good business is done. Regards, Fred Zaragoza 349966

- 30717

by:

This product works great just make sure to ground the white wire with the ring terminal on it. Mine had to be grounded to the car side to work my pop up lights. It has no brakes but the trailer had a 7 way plug already on it and the car was flat 4. Once the white wires were spliced together it works great. 373717

- 30717

Hitch was as advertised. The printed instructions made it a breeze. Took about an hour with me and an experienced mechanic. The light kit took a little longer than expected but was installed inside the car vice behind the lights like the video showed. Towing a camper this weekend, not expecting any issues. 420992

the adapter was exactly what i was looking for have a 4 pole on truck needed a 7 for the new popup we bought, trailer is light enough i don't need brakes just the lights, easy to use plug it in and ground it to frame your good to go, thanks etrailer for a great product and easy fix no rewiring 305246

This adapter also went well , be aware it did not come with the mounting plate ,be sure and order the mounting plate at the same time , as I had to get mine after the fact , in all honesty it was my mistake .Unless this is a repair replacement you will need the plate to install this item . 241795

This RV receptacle works great for my set up. Most of the wires hooked to the Curt wiring harness connector. I installed a two wire cable from this to the front for 12Vddc and Electric brake control. I also hooked to my backup light to provide for my trailer back-up lights (LED). 323519

- 30717

by:

The 4 Pole to 7 Pole adapter is excellent. It is exactly what I was looking for and the quality is superb. It saves time and is simpler to use than having to figure out different color codes and splicing wires. It is a much cleaner look than having wires hanging all over the place. 46131

- 30717

by:

Great item, great price. Be aware that the white wire from the 4 way is not connected...it is cut about 4 inches long and hidden within the plastic harness covering. I believe that they expect grounding to be accomplished via the heavy white wire with solderless connector. 107240

- 30717

by:

The website was extremely easy to use especially with the feature to pick my vehicles connection and my trailers connection. My purchase arrived very promptly and the customer service was excellent. The adapter works perfectly and I will definitely shop from etrailer again. 308376

Needed this for a new boat trailer that has surge brakes. Worked great for the tie-in needed to back-up lights to disable the trailer brakes while backing up. Easy process, even for me!! Recommend the mounting bracket too for a clean install. Thanks et!! 99261

Exactly what i was looking for. Easy install. Going from 4pole to 7pole was a breeze. I actually hardwired mine, the white ground in 4pole adapter is a dummy. So make sure you ground out the 7pole connector seprately or connect to am existing trailer ground. 154914

  • Can I Charge My Trailer Battery Using 7-Way Trailer Connector on Truck
  • You would not be able to charge your battery through the wiring on your 4-way trailer connector. Since your truck has a 7-way connector, you could maintain the power to the battery but not charge it. To begin, you would need to cut off your 4-way trailer connector and install a 7-way connector on the trailer like the Optronics 7-way, part # A7WCB. You would need to connect the appropriate wires. White is ground, Yellow is left turn and brake, Green is right turn and brake, and Black...

  • Trailer Brake Lights Do Not Work when Headlights Are On
  • It sounds as if there is a weak ground connection somewhere on the trailer. Ground issues normally show up when there is more load on a system. Your situation is a perfect example of that. With the running lights on already drawing power, stepping on the brakes adds even more draw on the system. First, to isolate the issue, disconnect the trailer from the truck. Then use a circuit tester, like # 3808 if you do not already have one, to test the connector on the truck. Have someone run...

Also, in the power distribution box, there is a 40 amp fuse in location 16 for trailer tow battery charge and stop/turn lamps. If this fails to correct the problem you can troubleshoot. The best way is to disconnect the truck and trailer and test each one individually. If you happen to have access to another truck or trailer that...

Start by plugging in the brake control adapter into the OEM harness located under the steering wheel, just to the right of the emergency brake pedal. Then find a place to mount the brake controller. Look for a...

  • How to Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 1998 Dodge Ram for a Brake Controller
  • If your 1998 Dodge Ram did not come with a factory 4 or 7-Way trailer connector, then you will need to first install Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118329. I have included a link to a video installation and a link to the installation instructions for reference. You would then need to install a 4 and 7 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. We have a couple of detailed FAQ articles on this installation which I have linked for you. I have also included a video link showing a typical installation...

  • Troubleshooting No Right Brake Light Signal on a Trailer with 4-Way Wiring Harness
  • It sounds like one of two situations. The first thing I would check, is the tail lights connection to ground. Most tail lights are grounded through their mounting hardware. Make sure that there is no paint or corrosion keeping the light from making a good ground connection. You should also check out the tail light bracket connection to the trailer frame. If the bracket is bolted to the trailer frame there may be rust and corrosion inhibiting the ground connection. If a ground issue is...

  • No Trailer Connection on Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller 90195 on a 2000 Toyota Tundra
  • I would start by inspecting the connector on your trailer and the vehicle to make sure there is not corrosion in the connector which could be causing a bad or weak connection. If there is corrosion in the trailer side connector, you would need to replace it with 7-way Connector, part # A7WCB. For the replacement vehicle side connector, you would need Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole, part # 30717. For future use, I would recommend using Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors, part # 11755,...

  • Setting Up a 2009 Ford E-350 Van without Factory Towing Package for Brake Controller Wiring
  • There are 3 options from the manufacturer for the 2009 E-350 Ford Van. Factory 7-Way trailer wiring, factory 4-Way trailer wiring, and no existing trailer wiring. I will go over all three since you did not indicate which one your vehicle has. If you have the factory 7-Way trailer wiring, you will be able to use the 3034-P wiring harness that you selected to easily install your prodigy brake controller. When looking for a port under the dash, it will be near the top of the instrument...

  • Can a 4-Way to 7-Way Trailer Wiring Adapter be Installed Just for Lighting Functions on a Trailer
  • Yes, you can just plug in the 4-Way from your 2007 GMC Acadia into the Tow Ready Adapter, # 30717, but you will have to ground the white wire on the adapter. It will need to attach to a clean and corrosion free bare metal surface. If the trailer does not have electric brakes, it makes me wonder why it has a 7-Way. If it has items on it that require 12 volt power you would need to connect the black wire on the adapter to the vehicle battery via a 40 amp circuit breaker, # PK54540, and...

  • Adapter to Convert 4-Pole Trailer Connector on a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to a 7-Way
  • There are two types of 7-pin trailer connectors, the 7-way blade style which is much more common or the 7-way round pin which isn't very common at all, so I'll assume you have the 7-way blade style. I'll link you to our Trailer Wiring FAQ which has photos showing what both of them look like. There are two possible installation alternatives. If the trailer has brakes and you want them to function, you'll need to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. You'd...

  • Wiring a Brake Controller and a 7-Way Connector On a Dodge 2500
  • With the factory 4-Way connector you will need a brake controller with the proper wiring connection for Dodge vehicles. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy, item # 90885 and adapter item # 3020-P, for your vehicle. This adapter is a vehicle specific brake controller connector. You will also need a 7-Way, item # 30717, adapter. With these parts you can use the specific instructions on our brake controller wiring page for 1995-present Dodge Ram trucks (see link). From the front wheel...

  • How to Wire a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a Toyota Highlander Hybrid
  • In order to provide a maintenance charge through the 4 Pole to 7 Pole Adapter, # 30717, you will need to connect the black wire on the adapter to the vehicle positive battery terminal via a 40 amp circuit breaker, # PK54540. You will also need to make sure the white ground wire on the adapter is connected to the vehicle frame. The wiring from a 7-Way will provide a maintenance charge to a trailer battery but will not fully charge it. You will also need about 20 feet of wire # 10-1-1....

I would go ahead and install the 7-Way connector. We have the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, which includes everything needed to install the wiring for the 7-way connector, once you have the 4-Way installed. You mentioned a 5-Way connector and if...

  • Brake Controller Installation on 1978 Ford F100
  • To use the electric brakes on the trailer, you will need a brake controller to actuate them. I can highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 is our best seller, it is very easy to use and set up. You will also need one of our Brake Controller Installation Kits. If you are needing a 6-way connector, use part # ETBC6. For a 7-way, use # ETBC7. The kits contain everything necessary to install a controller, including the adapter that will plug into your existing 4-pole...

  • Options for Installing 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2004 Ford F150 Equipped with 4-Pole
  • Although the # 30717 will work, I have a better suggestion for you. If your F150 is the New Body style, use part # 118247. If you have the Old Body style, use # 118242. Either connector will plug inline with your existing trailer connector, allowing you to retain the function of your existing 4-pole. Either kit includes the necessary fuses and relays to activate the remainder of the tow package circuits. Granted, this is a more expensive option, but it will be a very quick and easy plug-and-play...

However there is another way to connect your trailer wiring that would eliminate the need for the # 47435 adapter. What you can do, is check to see if there is a 4-way connector connected to your 6-way. If there is not a 4-way connected to the 6-Way, you can just cut...

This plugs directly into your existing wiring and requires no cutting or splicing. I have attached an installation video of this wiring on a 2006 E-250 you can check out. At this point, you have 2 options. If your 4-way is working properly, then you can plug it back in and test the corresponding poles inside the 7-way connector to be sure the adapter is working properly. But if the positive of one is connected to the positive of the other (and the same for the negatives) then you have a 12 volt system.
