Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring HM48480 Review

Today we're reviewing part number HM48480 from Hopkins. This is their Endurance 7-way trailer connector socket for the vehicle end. It's pretty simple and straightforward. Here's your 7-way connector with a sturdy dust cap. And as you can see, you have the 7-way trailer connector right there. And what you do is run your vehicle wires through the small end of this piece, bring them out here, connect them to the blades on the trailer connector, and then it snaps on, and you're all set.

So then all you have to do is mount this that way, and you're ready to go. Your hardware is included, and you also get two packages of Dielectric grease for your electrical connection. And there you have it for part number HM48480, the Hopkins Endurance 7-way trailer connector socket. .

etrailer gave excellent service. Shipping was prompt. Email followup was excellent. I needed a part to hook up to a Silverado 3500 with the wires to the bed already there (taped up at the front of the bed on the driver side) and didn't want to tap into the existing plug on the bumper. The L Shaped bracket is easily detachable so that the plug can be screwed directly into the sheet metal of the truck bed once a hole is cut. However 2 things....the unit comes with nuts and bolts so get ready for a trip to Home Depot to get some sheet metal screws of some sort for most installs in the bed. Second, the holes that the screws must go in are hex shaped which is great for the bolts that come with the unit but not for sheet metal screws so be sure and get screws with a small enough head to countersink into the holes or with a big enough base so as not to sink into the hex shaped holes. 103078

I installed this receptacle in the side, top rail of my truck to supply power to my 5th wheel trailer. The connectors at the rear are very sturdy, I was able to tighten the connections very tight without fear of them stripping out. Looks like a factory installation! 27853

Good quality with seal on cover. Wiring installation was a little tight with the housing. It did mount perfectly with my Draw-tite hitch. 63295

Great product, shipped promptly. The video on etrailer.com made installation a breeze. Even comes with non-corroding grease for terminal connections. I got stuck as an amateur wire-installer and had to call etrailer.com for some technical advice (didnt have a purple wire or orange wire as all wiring diagrams online showed....) the tech support was super knowledgeable and got me running in no time! 186563

Easy to wire in. Seems that it will be pretty durable. Instructions were good and included a wiring diagram. Only improvement I can offer is that the wiring stamps (ie. LT, RT, GND, AUX, etc) were not readable once you loosened the wire clamps. It would have been much more convenient if the stamps were visible once I loosened the clamps to put the wires in. 88907

Great value. Toyota wanted $235 for the replacement which included an 18" wiring harness with a Weatherpack connector. I cut the Toyota harness at the failed socket and attached the wires to the new socket as shown in diagram. 89557

Great product. The labeling on each connection really makes it easy to install. seems rugged enough, but I would still be careful where it is mounted so rocks/dust/water don't damage the casing or wiring. 84077

Do you have a question about this Wiring?

  • How to Stop Corrosion in The 7-Way RV Style Connector
  • Your best bet to eliminate corrosion in your 7-way connector is to use some Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors, item # 11755. Use this on the wiring connectors inside the connector when installing the connector and occasionally on the connection between the truck and trailer and your corrosion issues will be behind you. The corrosion you are experiencing is from moisture in the air and is prevelent with the RV connectors. The presence of constant 12 volt power creates an atmosphere...

  • How to Clean a 7-Way Trailer Wiring Connector
  • There are several items you might want to try using for removal of corrosion in your 7-way trailer connector, like part # HM48480. White Vinegar A wedge shaped, slip on pencil eraser or art gum eraser Pipe cleaners PB Blaster If the corrosion is light, apply white vinegar with a pipe cleaner followed by scrubbing with the eraser to do the trick. If the corrosion is a bit heavier spray the connector down with PB Blaster first let it sit for a while and repeat. Once the connector...

  • Installing Hopkins Endurance 7-Way Trailer Connector, # HM48480 on a 2000 Chevy Astro
  • Wiring color/function on vehicle wiring differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and even among model years of the same vehicle, so the best way to determine the functions of the vehicle wiring is to test it with a circuit tester like # 3808. Before that, there may have been a short on the trailer wiring that has caused the running lights on your 2000 Chevy Astro to stop working. I recommend taking a look at the fuses to determine if the one for running lights has been blown and that...

  • Brake Controller Installation on 2004 Honda CRV
  • Honda does not pre-wire the CRV for a brake controller installation, so you will have to run a length of 10 gauge wire from the passenger compartment, through the firewall and engine compartment and under the vehicle to connect to the 7-pole connector at the rear. The brake controller output wire would connect to the # 2 pin on the trailer connector, which is sometimes labeled BLUE. I took a look at your order, and saw that you did not order a tail light converter, part # 118336 for...

  • Trailer Connector On 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 Is Not Working When Connecting Gooseneck Travalong Trailer
  • It sounds like the vehicle end connector in the bed of your truck is damaged or the wiring in the trailer connector may be damaged. Using a circuit tester like the Quickee Circuit Tester, # 3808, you will want to test the wires going into the 7-way on your 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 to see if the connector is damaged. If the wires show current to the connector but the connector is not working you need to replace the vehicle connector. If they do not show current the problem will be further up...

  • Converting 4-Pole Trailer Connector to 7-Way
  • If the vehicle has an existing 4-pole trailer connector, and you are wanting to convert it to a 7-way, using an adapter like part # 37185 is your best bet. The adapter would plug directly into the existing 4-pole, with 4 wires remaining. The blue wire would connect to the brake output wire from a brake controller. The black wire would connect to the vehicle battery via a 40 amp breaker like part # 9510, and would be used to maintain a trailer mounted battery, if needed. The white wire...

  • Brake Controller and Weight Distribution for a 2000 Chevy Astro and Trail Lite Bantam B19

  • Can a 1982 Chevy S-10 Be Equipped with a Multitow Trailer Connector at the Front for Flat Towing
  • Technically, you could install any type of connector you wanted to at the front of your 1982 Chevy S-10. The problem would then be you would need a bunch of different extensions, like # HM47055 as an example, to go from the rental truck to the S-10. You would first need to wire the vehicle for lights. You can do this with diodes which would be a good idea since it is a more permanent solution and it sounds like you will be towing the truck often. You can use the Roadmaster Universal...

  • There really isn't a set maximum gauge wire that could be used on the Hopkins Connector part # HM48480. Most people will use 10 gauge wire as the max gauge for the brake output, 12 volt accessory, and ground wires. So you could easily use that gauge or slightly smaller or bigger without a problem.
