Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Positive Caster Makes for a Smoother Towing and Installation Experience

Blue Ox TrackPro Positive Caster

When you turn a corner in a car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically corrects itself and returns to center. The same technology used to keep your vehicle centered on the road is what the TrackPro uses to prevent trailer sway before it even starts, no matter if it's caused by high winds or sharp turns. Pointing toward the rear of your trailer, there's a positive caster angle built into the hitch. It works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

This positive caster creates another benefit - an easier installation. Since the required pitch is alredy pre-set, there's no need to fine-tune it using hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew. The only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height.

Steel-on-Steel Friction Corrects Sway

Blue Ox TrackPro Steel-on-Steel Friction

If you need an option built with American-made steel that will hold your trailer in line while providing sway control, the Blue Ox TrackPro might be just what you're after. In addition to the pre-set pitch described earlier, the TrackPro creates a rigid system that holds your trailer in line behind your vehicle, helping keep your trailer from getting off track. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Will the Blue Ox Tongue Weight Adapter Work With the Blue Ox Track Pro
The Blue Ox Pole Tongue Weight Distributing Hitch Adapter # BXW4023 is supposed to work with any over the frame style WDS, but since you're using the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU55FR you'd want # EQ95-01-5950 instead.

  • Troubleshooting Ford F-150 And 2022 Coachman Northern Spirit Riding Light With Blue Ox TrackPro
From your description, it appears your the front of your 2012 Ford F-150 is riding light because you have too much weight on the tongue. The good news is you do not have to replace your entire Blue Ox TrackPro. The Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - 7-Hole Shank - Underslung - 10K GTW, 1K TW, part # BLU55FR, you are using is an underslung coupler; the coupler is attached to the bottom of your trailer's frame instead of the top. • Can Timbren Springs, SuperSprings & Blue Ox Weight Distribution All Work Together 2018 Ford F-150?
You are able to install the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFR1504E along with the SuperSprings # SSA28 while also using a Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU55FR on your 2018 Ford F-150. The weight distribution is going to help the most with leveling your F-150 when connected to a trailer. The SuperSprings being a more active suspension than the Timbren will begin to engage sooner when weight is applied and will provide a more stable ride. The Timbren's with these...

  • Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for a 7,500 lb GVWR Trailer
The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-1000 is a decent recommendation and they are reliable - I just would say they are more of that entry-level, economy style weight distribution system. The Reese Strait-Line # RP66084 that would be the right size for a 7,500 lb GVWR trailer is definitely more of a premium option as it has arguably the best sway control, but you are correct that it is a bit more tricky to set up just because there are more parts than normal. For a great, middle-of-the-road...

  • Recommended Eaz-Lift ReCurve R3 for a Lance Trailer with 710 lbs Loaded Tongue Weight
Hey Martin, it's great to hear from you again! If I were in your shoes I'd go with the Eaz-Lift ReCurve R3 rated for 1,000 lbs of tongue weight so you're able to still load a few things up in your truck bed (behind your rear axle) and not overload the system. A weight distribution kit isn't added into the tongue weight since it's part of the solution, so you'll just need to make sure your 710 lbs of tongue weight and cargo behind the rear axle don't exceed 1,000 lbs. We don't carry the...

  • 2018 Ford F-150 Towing Capacity for 10K GVWR Travel Trailer
Great question! The GVWR of 7,000 lbs is the max your 2018 Ford F-150 can weigh when it comes to the vehicle weight, plus passengers, plus cargo. For towing a trailer we are needing to find the GCWR instead, which is the max combined weight rating of both the truck, passengers, cargo, and anything for the trailer. According to the 2018 Ford Towing Guide it looks like all 2018 F-150s with the 3.5 V6 have a high enough trailer weight rating for this to be safe, unless you have the 4.10...

  • Replacement Weight Distribution System for 6,600 lb Loaded Trailer
I really like the Blue Ox TrackPro systems because they have the built-in sway control and brackets with adjustments to fit different trailer tongue profiles They have the 13K system # BLU27FR as opposed to a 12K system but unless you have a really tongue-heavy setup and a lot of stuff sitting behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle the 10K system # BLU55FR will give you a better performance. • Can Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System Be Used with an Underslung Trailer Coupler
Thanks for reaching out, Joe! You can technically make the Curt TruTrack fit with an underslung coupler by using longer brackets like the 8" # C17515 or 10" # C17516 but I don't really recommend doing this because the TruTrack wasn't really designed to work with an underslung setup. Instead, I recommend using a weight distribution system designed specifically for an underslung coupler like what we find with the 10K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU55FR which works well with loaded trailer tongue...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 7,500 lbs Travel Trailer
I looked online and the Forest River 263bhxl tops out at right around 7,500 lbs when fully loaded. A weight distribution system is recommended off of tongue weight which is typically 10% -15% of your trailer's total weight. This would put yours from 750 lbs - 1125 lbs. With this in mind I would not recommend using the Blue Ox TrackPro item # BLU55FR you were looking at. It has a tongue weight range of 800 lbs - 1,000 lbs and you would get nothing out of it if your tongue weight is above...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 4,500 lbs GeoPro Travel Trailer
I would be happy to help you find the right weight distribution system for your Geopro Travel Trailer. I will start out by saying if you are going to be off-roading you will absolutely want to unhook the bars. You will break or warp something very quickly. With that in mind, I recommend the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution item # BLU67FR. This system has a 600 lbs - 800 lbs tongue weight range which will cover your trailer perfectly. It also has built in sway control that will keep...

  • How to Choose WDH Based Off of Trailer Tongue Weight
Great question! The tongue weight rating on a weight distribution hitch (WDH), like the 1K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU55FR, takes into account the loaded tongue weight of your trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle (which is known as the total tongue weight). When a WDH is set up correctly your vehicle should be within 1" of it's unloaded height. To make sure you get the best performance be sure to have your loaded trailer tongue measured at 10-15% the...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System With 6 Inches of Drop
The Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66560 offers good sway control and weight capacities, but is a little limited on the amount of drop. We do not currently have an option to give you more than 4 inches of drop. That being said, we do have a few other options available. The Blue Ox Weight Distribution Shank # BLU86FR will offer up to 7 inches of drop when used with one of their trunnion bar set ups. This would need to be purchased separately from one of said systems. These do have a little less...

  • Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution For Flagstaff 22TBS Travel Trailer w/720LBS Dry Tongue Weight
Yes, the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU55FR will be the correct system to use as long as your Flagstaff 22TBS has an underslung coupler. Otherwise you will need the Hitch # BLU77FR if you have a standard coupler which is mounted on top of the trailer frame. Both of these have the tongue weight rating of 800-1,000lbs of tongue weight. Your 720lbs dry weight will quickly increase to over 800lbs when the dealer installs a deep cycle battery and they fill the propane tanks.
