Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Positive Caster Makes for a Smoother Towing and Installation Experience

Blue Ox TrackPro Positive Caster

When you turn a corner in a car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically corrects itself and returns to center. The same technology used to keep your vehicle centered on the road is what the TrackPro uses to prevent trailer sway before it even starts, no matter if it's caused by high winds or sharp turns. Pointing toward the rear of your trailer, there's a positive caster angle built into the hitch. It works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

This positive caster creates another benefit - an easier installation. Since the required pitch is alredy pre-set, there's no need to fine-tune it using hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew. The only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height.

Steel-on-Steel Friction Corrects Sway

Blue Ox TrackPro Steel-on-Steel Friction

If you need an option built with American-made steel that will hold your trailer in line while providing sway control, the Blue Ox TrackPro might be just what you're after. In addition to the pre-set pitch described earlier, the TrackPro creates a rigid system that holds your trailer in line behind your vehicle, helping keep your trailer from getting off track. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Weight Distribution Hitch With Sway for a 2021 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 267BHS Travel Trailer
For your 2021 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 267BHS I recommend using the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET. This hitch offers weight distribution and sway control with no need to remove parts when backing up. You Jayco has 695lbs of tongue weight dry and when loaded you will probably see that number get closer to 900lbs. The Equal-i-zer is rated for up to 1,000lbs of tongue weight. If you are installing this hitch yourself you will need a 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216...

  • Uneven Pressure Being Applied by a Weight Distribution System
Hey Tim, thanks for the pictures. You do not want to tighten one spring bar more than the other. Here's what I recommend doing the next time you go to set it up. Lock your trailer's coupler onto the ball. Then use the tongue jack to raise the tongue and the back end of the tow vehicle a few inches. Then attach the spring bars to the brackets ensuring they're in the same position. Once this is done you can lower the tongue until the tongue jack is free. If everything on your weight distribution...

  • SumoSprings or Timbrens for a 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4
Hey Dustin, thanks for reaching out! I will recommend SumoSprings over Timbrens all day everyday because they are much more forgiving when the vehicle is unloaded. We've actually joked around here about how the Timbren kits will either give you back problems or fix your back problems because of how rigid they make the unloaded ride quality. The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SS45FR have a 1,500 lb weight rating which will be great for the tongue weight of your 7,500 lb trailer....

  • Blue Ox SwayPro VS TrackPro Weight Distribution System
I would recommend that Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU77FR simply because it does not have lift chains like the SwayPro # BXW1006. Both will do a great job but the TrackPro will have a little less movement because of the absence of drop chains. Blue Ox is a popular brand and most other competitors are around the same quality if not a little less.

  • Is it Normal For The L-Brackets On Blue Ox Track Pro Weight Distribution Hitch To Pitch Forward?
As long as the Spring Bars # BLU52FR lay flat on the L-Brackets # BLU72QR for your Blue Ox Track Pro weight distribution you are okay to use the brackets pitched slightly forward. The only issue would be if the spring bar is only touching the edge off the L-brackets as this would reduce the sway protection due to the limited surface area. I have linked the installation instructions for the Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU77FR which contains the torque settings for the L-Brackets on page 5.

It sounds like the height of your truck has likely increased which means your WD hitch needs to be re-adjusted to match the new hitch height. • What Weight Distribution Hitch do I Need for My Travel Trailer That Weighs 7,000 Pounds?
Hello Brandon, Congrats on the new camper! When picking out the right weight distribution hitch it is most important to be as close to the tongue weight as possible. You said that your tongue weight is around 700 pounds, I am not sure if you are going by the 10% or used a scale. The tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the trailer weight, that would put you between 700-1,050 pound tongue weight. You could always use something like the Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale w/ Storage Bag...

  • Can 1,300lb Blue Ox TrackPro Spring Bars Be Used With A 900lb Tongue Weight
Weight distribution hitches like the Blue Ox TrackPro all typically have a tongue weight range that they're designed to handle and going too far above or below that range with hinder the performance of the hitch. In the 900lb tongue weight range you'd need to use part # BLU77FR, which covers 800lbs - 1,000lbs tongue weight. You will be able to use the Extended Weight Dist Shank # EQ90-02-4600 which is 14" long from the hitch pin hole center to the bolt hole center for the hitch head. You can use this measurement to determine if you will have enough room for your tailgate to now clear your Blue Ox weight distribution hitch. • Correct Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution For 800 lb Tongue Weight
The correct Blue Ox TrackPro weight distribution for your camper that has a GVWR of 7,815 lbs is going to be the option for the tongue weight between 800 lbs to 1,000 lbs. The reason for that is the weight distribution hitch you want is one that is rated for the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer, and since loaded tongue weight is generally in the 12 percent or so range, I'm guessing the trailer was not fully loaded. • Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for 6000 lb Grand Design Imagine Travel Trailer
