An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Review

Today we're gonna be taking a look at a popular upgrade for your pickup trucks. It's the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System. All you gotta do is put your vehicle in the fit guide, just to get the kit that'll have a custom bracket so it'll fit the truck. There's a lot of different ways that you can beef up your suspension and a lot of options on our site. But I like these the best, because it literally took me maybe 15 minutes to install. So if I we're to compare this to airbags, airbags are kind of a pain, you have to run airlines you probably need a compressor.

And if you don't get a compressor, you gotta run out and air them up. They're a little bit more customizable, but you don't really have it completely dialed in. With this, the stop is exactly where it is, and as your suspension starts to sag, it'll kick in right away and there's a lot less maintenance and it's the most cost effective way to kinda beef up your suspension. So if you want my opinion, this is the way to go. So here is what we added today.

So we basically just replaced the factory bump stops. So there's a lot of different situations where we're gonna really need these. We'll notice the gap down here. We're gonna have a lot less of a gap than we did with the factory system. So, if your vehicle sags under a load whenever you have a lot of stuff in here.

You have a 450, you're planning on doing some pretty big stuff with it, so a lot of the times it'll make your headlights just go way up bright and you're blinding everybody that you're driving against. Also with less of a load on the front wheels, we are going to have a little bit less good steering and handling just because of the weight transferred to the back. So, you bought a big old truck, you're planning on doing quite a lot of heavy hauling, so this isn't going to increase our capacity of our truck. It is gonna have a limit of 12,000 pounds, but it is going to do a lot for you, what Well, a lot of that sag whenever you have a lot of load in the back, what happens is it starts going like that. One, you're gonna be that guy on the highway that everybody's flashing lights at because once your front end starts to raise, it's gonna look like high beams and you're gonna be blinding everybody.

You don't wanna be that guy, trust me. Also, whenever that weight kinda transfers to the back, there's gonna be less weight on the front. So less weight on the front, that's what steers. We're not gonna have near as good of handling as if we have these on, and it's a little bit more level to where we keep the weight kinda distributed a little bit more. Also with the leaf springs, they're gonna engage a lot quicker with the Timbren Suspension System. So your leaf springs aren't gonna be working a whole lot. It's gonna limit trailer sway and all sorts of stuff. So if you really just wanna kind of protect your truck and just make the whole riding experience a little bit nicer, it's definitely the way to go. Whether you're hauling with a ball mount, or a gooseneck or fifth wheel, it's not gonna have any interference with the gooseneck or fifth wheels in the bed of your truck. So you don't have to worry about that. Some of you guys we're wondering, and Adam's saying, it's not gonna be a problem. So one, I like the black color, 'cause it doesn't really stick out like the factory ones. And also these are a lot smaller than the ones we put on here, there's only about a finger's length in between there. So they're definitely gonna engage even with some of the lighter loads. And that'll do it for a look at the Timbren Suspension Enhancement, and I'm Adam with etrailer..

Great suspension system, I have had them on all four Ford Transits great stability and load balancing and I haven’t had a failure, excellent for towing, the new pair I bought for my T350 HD has 2 spacers to adjust ride hight. I started out with one spacer and it looks normal and rides smoothly with a 3,500 lb. trailer.

by:

We replaced the factory bump stops with the Timbren bumps stops. The difference was amazing! The OEM part was approximately 3 inches off the frame. The Timbren fit perfectly and eliminated all of the bouncing and bottoming out of the trailer hitch. Great product at a fair price.

2000 Ford Transit Connect

Fell off after 1st drive. Load not that heavy maybe 2000 pounds. Had on last truck no problems. FORD Transit 250 seems to not work and fell off. Bolt stayed tight rubber part came off bolt and washer.

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

by:

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

by:

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

by:

These work great for giving you a solid towing experience when loaded heavy; however, when driving empty you definitely get the jounce bumper “into the air” experience when driving on moderate to rough roads. I have the recommended gap installed between the axle and the timbrens, but with terrible midwest roads and highways it doesn’t seem to be enough gap. Smooth roads it rides great. It’s driving 80mph on the expressway and hitting potholes or large cracks where these will hit causing uncomfortable harsh ride.

I’ve resorted to installing and then subsequently removing these anytime I use my travel trailer for longer trips (30minute removal time). I tow a 7000lb loaded travel trailer with an f150 and just needed something to make the soft half ton suspension from porpoising too much on bad-roads. Mission accomplished when towing as I said these things work great for heavy loads. It almost rides better with heavy loads…. I was going to give airbags a try but the reviews from others have scared me from those because even with airbags at the lowest setting you still get the jouncing on bumpy roads.

by:

Easy install took about 20 minutes on my 2017 Ram 3500 SRW. Had about 1/2 inch clearance as recommended. Loaded up my 5th wheel (2350 hitch weight) and about 200 lbs of gear in the bed. Just got back from a 800 mile camping trip through mountains of TN. You can really feel the difference around those sharp corners and uneven surfaces. The truck felt firm and controlled not hard and jarring as some have mentioned. Going over those overpasses with the wonderfully smooth (Not) joists was greatly improved. The truck would squat and rebound again, with a firm controlled response. Driving without a load felt the same as before without them. I would highly recommend these! Ordering from etrailer continues to be my go to option!

by:

So just got them installed today 3/27/24 haven't hooked up the 5th wheel yet but will be this weekend so we'll find out if they are good as everyone claims they are fingers crossed. Install was crazy simple took about 30min(had to find a wrench) have about 1/2in gap between the axle, really excited to test them. Will update the review after this weekend.

The Timbren rear bump stops for 2020 Suburban were great quality and fit perfectly in the replacement of the original ones with no problems. The old ones pulled right out by hand with no hassle. When I installed the new ones I put 2x4 blocks that I cut underneath the bump stops. Then hooked up the 6,400 lbs travel trailer with about 750 lbs of tongue weight on it and they pressed right into place. The Suburban was more stable because it had less swaying while towing. I also gained about 1 inche more in the fender gap which means less rearend saging.

by:

Installed these Timbrens on my 2016 F350 to enhance the stability of my truck for a slide in truck camper. Have loved the results of them. They have noticeably helped leveling the truck/camper combo, and sway while driving. When the camper is off the truck these are not engaged. Have had no issues and would recommend them.

by:

I don't usually write reviews but in this case I have to. I have been using these springs for about a year now and they work exactly as advertised. I carry a truck camper on my truck from March until November. Once I loaded my camper the truck sagged very noticeably. I tried the Roadmaster Active Suspension (don't waste your money) before I discovered the Timbren springs. The Timben springs installed easily, eliminated the sag and gave the truck a much more stable ride because it eliminated the side to side rocking in the back. If you are thinking about getting these, you will not be disappointed.

  • Best Timbren Kit for a 2019 Ford Transit T350 Motorhome Chassis
The best Timbren kit for your 2019 Ford Transit T350 motorhome chassis is part # TFRTR350 rated for 5,600 lbs. The other kit # TFRTR350HD you referenced is rated for 8,600 lbs and designed around vehicles with heavy-duty applications like a service vehicle. The standard kit will give you the best ride quality which is why I recommend going that route. If you were to use the heavier rated kit then the ride quality would be very harsh and you wouldn't enjoy driving your motorhome around.
