Video Transcript for Review of RAS Vehicle Suspension - Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement - RAS4611TD

Randy: Hey guys, it's Randy here at eTrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at a rear suspension upgrade for the Toyota Tundra. This is the Roadmaster Active Suspension system, and essentially this is going to turn your static or your passive style leaf springs into an active mechanical suspension system. We'll have two connection points. One's going to go around our spring blocks, essentially where the axle and the spring meet. It's going to sit right in here just like this.

So our leaf spring has a contour to it of course, this portion goes underneath, this portion goes above rather, and this is going to sit underneath it. The other end is going to go right around the end of that leaf spring. Now, this gives us a great advantage in a lot of areas, especially when towing and hauling. Depending on how you set it, you can get 25 to 40% improvement on your suspension. They're rated for a 2,000 pound capacity, so a thousand pounds a piece is how much weight they're going to support. This does not increase your capacity by 2,000 pounds of your truck.

Truck's rated for what the truck's rated for. This just takes a lot of that wear and tear off of that rear suspension. It's taking a lot of that brunt from it. As a byproduct of that, the ride quality and the handling of the vehicle go up significantly. I've installed these on several different vehicles.

One of them is one of our programmers. He's had them on there for about five years now and they work really well and they've really tightened his Silverado up. You turn the wheel, it just feels more direct. It just wants to travel. Also during accelerating, we're not going to have the axle wrap. A lot of times when your wheels turn, it wants to twist that axle.

This is going to eliminate that. Whether it's aggressive starts where you're trying to get out of the hole really quick or trailing, when we've got a force pulling rearward on our truck as we're trying to drive. Helps to eliminate that, which is going to help to eliminate any wheel hop if we're doing quicker acceleration stuff or bottoming out when we've got a load on. It's going to reduce any sway and any body roll out while cornering. As you go to take a turn, in a truck, a lot of times they want to lean a little bit. They kind of want to fade off. This helps keep everything nice and solid. This is a constantly active system so we don't have to wait for anything to engage and I like this system for certain things. If I we're always going to be hauling the same load in the same trailer, things like that, I like the system a lot. If I constantly switched to different trailers over and over and over and over again, I think airbags are a better way to go. They allow you a little bit quicker and easier adjustability. Now, those don't necessarily turn your suspension into an active system, but they have a lot of the same traits that these do. I think you'll like airbags in that situation. Whereas for just hauling the normal trailer that you usually do or staying within certain loads, I think these are a better way to go.Now, these are adjustable, so if you have these installed on your truck and you've got a 3,500 pound trailer and you're hauling around a UTV, then you decide you're going to go to a 7,000 pound trailer and haul around your Jeep or something like that, these are going to work for that. You can just tune them in to that load. Takes a little bit more effort than what you do out of airbags, but I like not having to constantly monitor their pressures in air bags, to make sure we've got enough pressure in there, make sure we're maintaining our minimum. I think the maintenance-free aspect of this adds a lot.Another thing I like about this, it's just a bolt on application and it bolts on very quickly. There's not a lot of stuff to do, once you get this part put around your leaf spring, get this part put around the leaf spring, then it's just a matter of making your adjustment. They're going to send two adjustment tools, they're just round disk. As you adjust these out, now keep in mind your rear axle needs to be hanging, completely hanging when you make your adjustment. But if we use the narrower one here, gives us about a 25% suspension improvement. The thicker one's going to give us about a 40% suspension improvement and that's when it fits down between the coils of the spring. The ones that we're installed on that Silverado I talked to, they've been on there for about five years. They've experienced some rust. I mean, we're in the Midwest here in Missouri, so we got a lot of salt and stuff like that on our roads, but it hasn't been so bad to where it's compromised any of the integrity. They use a durable epoxy E-coat finish on it and then of course, the yellow zinc on all of our other components. If you live in an area where rust is very common, I think these things are going to rust on you. I don't think it's going to compromise anything, like I said, but eventually they're going to have a little bit of rust to them.Another aspect of this, similar to what we get out of airbags, if we install them correctly, the airbags, is that we do have independent adjustability from side to side. So an in-bed camper, let's say, where you've got a water tank on one side or a maintenance truck, you know, the big box trucks that have the tools and stuff like that in them, sometimes those can be a little bit offset. You can adjust these independently from one another to where you could help that one side that sags. You can help that out a little bit. You can get it a little bit more even, spread that load out more even. I really like how this works. The more pressure that we put down on that suspension, the more we're going to get out of the system. It's a variable rated coil so they're automatically going to adjust to the load when you put them in. I like that.Again, load your truck up, hit the road. You don't really have to worry about stopping by a gas station or anything like that for air. It's going to level your ride out, of course. And overall I really like this system. I really like the way they've designed it and I like how easy it is. It's going to go on very quickly, it's going to solve a lot of the common problems we get from hauling typical trucks, typical loads, or the problems we have with that body roll. So it's kind of a double edged sword. It's going to improve the ride quality of your vehicle and then when it's time to start towing, you're going to have that additional support there to take all the wear and tear off a lot of those components.Be sure to use our fit guide. You want to put in your exact year, make, and model. As I said, these are going to be for the Tundra trucks, but they make them for all different varieties of vehicle, too. So put in your year, make, and model. Just ensure that you're going to get the perfect set for you, it's designed for your vehicle, they've made it in a way that it's going to bolt directly on and it's not going to interfere with anything. But again, overall, I think this is an excellent solution to beef up that rear suspension a little bit and get a lot of improvements in the ride quality.

Mounted on 2015 Tundra ,pull heavy car trailer and toy box these work great and are adjustable. Unlike airbags they won't leak and much easier install. They helped level truck when I'm loaded and resolved some front braking issues with the sensors on these new vehicled. 319138

I really like the suspension add on. It keeps my truck level when towing our 9000 lb camper bumper pull. I get great stability on the road and it helps with handling the tongue weight on my 2013 Toyota Tundra 1/2 ton. It doesn't change the stiffen the suspension of my truck until I add weight. So, you don't notice it with normal driving. Installation went smoothly. The components were high quality and heavy duty. I recommend it. 577747

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

I bought this based on I think the same product I bought several years ago for a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. At that time, I bought a kit for for a Ram 2500 and was very impressed. I put a truck camper on the Dodge and I don’t think it settled an inch and when I drove it I hardly knew the camper was back there at all. No sway and no handling problems at all. This time I bought the kit for a Nissan Titan, pulling a 25’ travel trailer (about 7000#). The truck rear still settles and is not in a level attitude in transit without the weight distribution hitch. The suspension kit makes it better but not as much as I expected. 565780

The product was very easy to install, and was very happy it didn't effect the ride of the 1/2 ton truck. Looking forward to see how it handles towing my 28ft travel trailer 690798

High quality components. We installed the Roadmasters on my 2000 Ford Excursion yesterday. The instructions for installation were clear and concise. The installation took about 45 min. A god bit of that time spent on jacking, wheel removal and replacement. Not a particularly difficult installation. My impressions after test drive: I think the ride was slightly harsher than before installation, but nothing significant. The sway control was greatly improved. Surprisingly, the vehicle seems to handle bumps better, and unexpectedly, braking seems better. All in all, a good upgrade at a reasonable price. Jim 563475

only drove twice so far. already feel great control of the rear end. much increase of positive traction, with very little drop. extremely easy installation! perfect step by step(with pics) instructions included. also easy to follow video, somewhere. I cant remember where I watched. not hooking up trailer till next weekend, after alignment. maybe I'll be back. overall the "active" concept in this product is exactly what an intermittent hauler wants. there is no feel of preload on leafs when not loaded. the product creates much better roll stability. 2013 silverado 2500hd 691029

I own a 2017 F150 and placed the RAS3611-y kit last year. So far the ride improvement and the handling when pulling my equipment trailer with 7000# load is great. Air load adjusters would have been a mistake. Thanks George J. for a great product. No need for load levelers with this kit. 675401

Great product! It does what it advertises and is a breeze to install on my F-150 but a little harder on the 350 since you have to remove the overload spring. Works great helps keep truck perfectly level when towing my 10k lb trailer. Highly recommend. 654976

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

2019 Nissan NV 2500 Cargo van owners please read! Etrailer sent the wrong parts the first time, but they took care of it right away. Their customer service is great and this review should not reflect upon them. The RAS seemed like a good solution to level the vehicle and reduce body roll, so I ordered them and installed. With the RAS at 40% and recalibrated at 40% after a test drive, it seems to do nothing. It does help if the van is totally empty, but who drives around an empty cargo van? I was at about 1/2 of the max payload and it still sagged in the back. I can’t speak for other applications, but this is not a good fit for Nissan NV. You have to remove a leaf spring bolt on this application while installing so it will hook between the spring and shackles. I wound up taking the van to a reputable spring shop and had the leafs built up. It only cost me $100 more than the RAS, and now it drives like it should. 656563

Comments

I spoke with my Roadmaster representative, and he explained that with this product, it is important to remember that it is designed to strengthen the existing leaf springs not resist and keep the vehicle perfectly level at all times. Anybody installing the kit should expect a little bit of give in rear leaf springs initially, then engage even more proportionate to and to counteract shifts in weight and uneven road surfaces, otherwise you’d expect a harsh ride to due lack of flexion in the leaf springs. Generally, if the vehicle is squatting up to 3-4 inches at the wheel well before installing the Roadmaster you should expect our kit to stay near level with somewhere between ¼’’ – 1’’ of give after installation. Beyond that, our kit will still help but from a load leveling standpoint it simply won’t be as noticeably effective. The vast majority of customers in the market for some sort of suspension enhancement product like this fall into this category. For the extremely heavy haulers & towers on the higher end of the spectrum that don’t want to purchase a bigger truck, they will usually tell them to go with an air bag set up.

I’m impressed by the quality and engineering of this product. The person who designed it should win an award! I installed this on my 2013 F150 in preparation for hauling around my 1998 24’ coachman I’ve been working on fixing up all winter. I didn’t want a solution that would stiffen up the trucks ride because it’s very comfortable. I can’t feel any change in ride. Installation was very easy, took about an hour for everything and just a few tools. I haven’t towed with it yet but I did hook my trailer up and it didn’t squat like it did before. So far, very impressed. I’m glad I didn’t mess with airbags and all. 629033

I have had this product a couple of months now with two trips pulling my travel trailer. It has helped in leveling out the truck/trailer so that less pressure is applied to the weight distribution system. Product is easy to install, I didn’t even need to take the tires off. It also is easy to adjust to fit different hitch weight. It did make my truck ride a little ruff but not to a point that is uncomfortable. I chose this product over air type products as I didn’t want to have to mess with it. I would recommend this product. 593932

I installed the product easily within less than an hour. On the test drive after, my truck rode smoother and more precise than prior to the install. I gained about 1-2 inches in lift on the back end, but have not towed with the setup yet. I would recommend this product. Very satisfied so far. 617063

Repeat customer. Just installed my second set of Roadmaster Active Suspension springs. Have not towed with them yet; however the ride on my 2014 F150 6.5' bed pickup is noticably smoother. I expect the result when I do tow my travel trailer to be the same as with my previous truck - night and day difference (no more "white knuckle towing)! 319927

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

I have Nissan 2500 van that I have converted for traveling. Its gross weight is 9000 lbs, and with all that is in it everyday it weighs around 7000 lbs. It has enough weight it sags. I occasionally pull a trailer, which makes the sag even worse. I install the RAS, and it added about 1 1/2 inches to the truck height. I haven't pulled with it yet, but around town it rides great. Maybe, a very slight stiffening of the suspension, but nothing like what Timbren does to a truck. These things were terrible to install. The instructions said there wasn't much clearance on this vehicle, so take apart the unit and put the spring hooks on before lifting the vehicle. I thought I was going to have to unbolt the springs. Using a jack in the right place allowed me to finally getting them into place. It did require much frustration, and some choice language before I finally got them installed. I'm still looking forward to towing with them to see if the sag problem is fixed. I do recommend these. Again on a Nissan van they are a b*tch to install. 650068

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

Thanks I put the springs on today’s. I have one question, I adjusted them to the 20% / one millimeter. Can they be adjusted to the 40% with truck sitting on ground if my trailer still has the bounce in it when hooked, or will I need to lift it off ground to readjust if needed. 590227

Comments

According to the manufacturer, when the suspension system is adjusted, the vehicle must be raised with the axle hanging free. This releases most of the spring tension.

As with many other reviewer's I researched several different brands and types of systems. The springs have helped out immensely with the tongue weight I have to pull with my F-150. I notice a 2 to 3 inch difference in the ride height with the springs on while towing approximately 1200 to 1400 pounds of tongue weight. It also takes out the bouncy feel from truck to trailer on non-smooth roads. The installation is very simple and quick. I highly recommend this product. 443416

Delivery was on time and the product was good and ready to go! Jacked up the truck put it on stands and 1hr 30mins later I was driving off for a test run. Works just like it says it would. No body roll, takes off so much smoother, and I did about 40 over those big rolling neighborhood speed bumps and it was super smooth. Before RAS it would have a real bouncy feel over the speed bump now it attack the bump if you know what I mean. I tow a 25' trailer so I can't wait to see how much bounce is taken out when I'm driving over the dippy roads through the mountain pass here in WA. Thanks E-trailer! 313970

My initial review was was 5 star rating and after one year of use it still remains a 5 ??. I have a chance now to tow my 25’ travel trailer for a season and works great. It helps with proposing and reduced the little sag when I have her loaded up for a long trip. Highly recommend RAS with a WDH combination for smooth comfortable towing experience.

Had the kit installed today at the local Toyota dealer on a 2019 Tacoma. The truck had a greatly improved ride and seemed to have a more steady rear end feel. I plan on towing an RV in a few weeks and to the mountains in July, and have a greater confidence in performance. It did raise the back a good 2", it doesn't look bad, as I had expected. I firmly believe that this was the right choice, I can't wait to put it to use! 611821

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

I did a lot of research to determine if I should use airbags or the RAS. For my application the RAS was the better choice. No matter who I asked, no one had a negative comment about this product (RAS). I tow a Jayco Travel Trailer (TT - 9000lbs) and while I have towed boats for years I was new to the type of tongue and hauling weight that the TT exerts on my vehicle. Installation was a breeze. I spent more time preparing my tools and finding my 22mm wrench than I did installing the RAS. There are many Youtube videos on how to install the RAS and I do recommend you watch them. My ride (F150 Echoboost) was smoother while pulling the trailer; however, I didn't feel any change to my daily driving (positive or negative). If you're using a WDH, I recommend these over the airbags. The airbags can be counter intuitive since the WDH should fix most of the weight distribution and level. The RAS works well with all WDH's and once installed you don't have to make any changes to it, unlike the airbags. Get the RAS - you'll be happy you did. 399233

Product was very easy to install. Very well made. It took me about 35 minutes to install both sides once the truck was on Jack stands. Product did raise the rear of my truck a little. Can't say how much because I forgot to measure before I started. Truck still rides nice, no harshness or strange noises. I purchased the roadmaster active suspension to help eliminate squat and improve driveability while towing our 7500lb travel trailer. Hopefully I will get to try it out with the trailer soon. 595303

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

Installed the Roadmaster auxiliary springs on a 2018 F150 Screw FX4 (max tow package; 7000 lbs rated payload capacity) because I've been unhappy with how much the rear squats when towing an enclosed car trailer (I use a weight distributing hitch), and a bit displeased with how the truck handles bumps, dips, etc. For whatever reason, Ford installed a weaker leaf spring pack on this truck / model (one fewer leaf spring than on earlier model I owned with a 7200 lbs payload capacity). In general, maybe because of the FX4 package, maybe because of the smaller wheels on this truck than my older F150 (18" vs. 20"), there is much more range of uncontrolled motion in this 2018, and much more bounce and jarring over uneven pavement. In my opinion, the rear leaf spring pack and shocks -- on this truck -- are not well matched. After considering air bags or an auxiliary leaf spring, I contacted Etrailer and chatted with a rep, who guided me to this Roadmaster unit. The rep was very helpful and took the time to discuss how I used my truck in order to determine the best option for me. Since I do not tow frequently (12-15 x per year), and my tongue wait varies between 600 - 700 lbs, the Roadmaster seemed to be a good middle-of-the road option over air bags, which require constant monitoring (not a big deal if you use your truck all the time). I wanted a "set it and forget it" option, and the Roadmaster was designed to be just that. The units installed very easily (I have access to a lift), the instructions are clear, and there's a very helpful video available on Etrailer's site. Most importantly, the ride smoothed out immediately as compared to stock. I set the units for the maximum payload increase rating (40%), which raised the rear end enough that the truck now looks a bit like a late '60s - 70s American muscle street rod (not a look I was trying to achieve), but the ride is far superior to stock. The truck no longer bounces, jars, or deflects to any significant degree, but the ride remains supple and smooth (I know, strange description for a truck). This is not to say that the stock ride quality was generally bad, but it certainly needed improvement for my tastes and needs. Unfortunately, I've not had the opportunity to tow with the auxiliary springs at the time of this review, but I am certainly optimistic that the ride height will now be level, and the ride quality improvements will be retained while towing. This is a good product, well made and supported, and Etrailer was a pleasure to work with. Very helpful sales representatives, fast shipping, and good customer support. 538434

After going back and forth with your install techs before purchasing they said what product to buy. I order it and doesn't fit my truck due to flipped rear axle I gave them pics so product was returned 411832

Comments

Hello David, I am sorry this product did not fit your truck. I spoke with our Roadmaster Techs and they told me this kit is not a fit for your truck since your truck suspension is not factory spec. This kit is only confirmed to fit the fit-guided vehicles with factory suspensions.

I have been using Roadmaster Active Suspension for a year now. The product works as advertised and has greatly improved the stability of my F-150 pulling a 7500 travel trailer. 444685

I have my RAS system for two years now and it performs as well the day I installed it.

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

I order these on Friday afternoon and I received them Monday afternoon. I had watched the clip on installation before ordering and it looked pretty easy. The installation instructions are very self explanatory and they were easy to install. From the time I starter until I had the tools picked up and put away it was about an hour and that was with taking a few phone calls. My initial ride after installing these was very good. I drove over a fairly rough road and tracks. My real test will come when I hook up to my trailer and load my tractor or car. I may have to readjust to a heavier setting but it is there if needed. 438869

Big improvement in my trailer towing. I have an F150 and tow a 36' 9000lb travel trailer. My trailer is on the larger size for my truck and these springs have corrected the trailer sway I was experiencing. Easy to install and I have them tightened to the 40% additional load spacer which did raise the rear of my truck by an inch. So I've also had to readjust the WD hitch settings, which may need some minor tweaking. But this suspension kit is working as advertised by reducing the trailer sway. Now my wife can relax a little more! 515597

Just like your advertising said they were very easy to install. My ride has not been affected it still is a great ride for a truck. After the installation the rear end of my truck was 2” higher which will help when I hook up my camper, instead of sagging now my truck is level they are a great product . Thank you 540473

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

2018 F150 4x4 owners pay attention to this review. I received the order today and unfortunately it was the wrong kit for my vehicle. Even though etrailer confirmed that a RAS3611-B is correct for my truck, it is actually for a F150 4x2. I contacted etrailer and costumer service rep was great and verified that initially the same part number came up for my vehicle, causing the confusion. My mistake, etrailer mistake. The correct kit for a 2018 Ford F150 4x4 is RAS3611-Y. etrailer is splitting the cost of return shipping and my correct kit has been ordered. etrailer has great costumer service. 567680

Review from a similar RAS RAS in Vehicle Suspension

I received my order a day earlier than estimated. That was nice. But, when I started the installation the next day, I immediately encountered a problem when installing the enclosed bracket for the emergency brake cable. The instructions state the O.E. bolt is 10mm. On my 2017 F-150 the bolt is 13mm and does not fit in the recessed hole on the supplied bracket. I'll unfortunately be making a trip to the local hardware store to find a bolt that will work in order to complete the installation. 540518

Comments

Thanks for the info, I have spoken with my contacts at Roadmaster Active Suspension and they have not heard about this issue, but their development team is looking into it to see if they need to update the bolts included.

Prompt shipping, good price, happy. The Roadmaster was easy to install and works as advertised. Truck used to squat under weight. Now even with the riding mower in the back, I cant even tell its there. No squat and good handling. Unloaded there is no effect on ride. Cranked to max, raised the rear about an inch. Like them. 364203

etrailer has amazing customer service and after talking through a few options for my 2015 Silverado Crewcab shortbed, we decided this product would be the best fit for what I wanted. The RAS comes put together and installs very quickly. It took me longer to get my tools rounded up and the wheels off than to install the RAS. I did set mine to 40% using the thicker gauge for the coils and it appears that added a little height to the back of the truck. No biggie as I planned on leveling blocks later anyway. The ride is definitely firmer and everything the product states about mitigating body roll, bumps and adding traction has held true so far. While I think the product is a little spendy compared to other options, it does more and is well worth the cost. I haven't had a chance to load the bed down yet, but the experience has been very positive unloaded. Thanks etrailer for excellent customer service and great pricing. 542212

product came very fast! all was packaged extremely well and no damage to any of the items I ordered. I have not installed them yet but I am excited to get them on and hopefully see that they take that little extra sag out of my truck while pulling my travel trailer! watched many video's on the installation process and seems to be very simple and straight forward... thanks etrailer 307783

Installed on my 2015 F-150. Great product. Easy installation, took longer to get the wheels off than it did to put the springs in. Adjusted to the 2mm spacing and it raised rear fender well height by 1". Improved unloaded handling and towing. Have recommended to friends and will have on any of my future vehicles 565608

  • Rear Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2007 Toyota Tundra
  • If you still are experiencing sag with the weight distribution system that can mean a few things. Either the system is rated too low, the system isn't setup properly, or the vehicle is being overloaded. While we can help you pick out suspension enhancement I'd first verify those three things. You want to make sure the loaded tongue weight of your system falls right in the middle of the range of your setup. For suspension enhancement for your 2007 Toyota Tundra that will help the most...

  • Best Suspension Enhancement for 2019 Toyota Tundra
  • Easily the best way to improve the suspension on your 2019 Toyota Tundra is with the Roadmaster Active Suspension Custom Leaf Spring Enhancement Kit # RAS4611TD because it is an active system which works to continually reinforce your original leaf spring suspension, and like you wanted, it requires zero maintenance whatsoever. The force normally put on your Tundra's current leaf springs - either when carrying cargo or when making a tight turn - gets transferred to the RAS Enhancement...
