If you need extra storage without the look of an over-the-rail, crossover toolbox, the chest style is a perfect solution. Much like standard toolboxes, the chest will sit flush against the front of the truck bed while the notched and wedged shape allows it to fit around the wheel well, freeing up more space in the truck bed. As two super-duty lift cylinders raise and lower the lid, an offset hinge allows the insulated beveled lid to open up to 90 degrees without coming into contact with the cab.

Video Transcript for UWS Wedge Series Truck Bed Chest Review UWS01040

What's up everybody. It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out this UWS tool chest, it's gonna be a wedge style and it sits in the bed of your truck. That way you can organize your tools and lock 'em up when you're not around. Let's check it out. So, right away, you're gonna see what sets this apart from the other style toolbox that is called the crossover, that sits on the bed rail.

On this one, it's better with visibility, so it's lower down in the bed. So if you got a fifth wheel or a gooseneck in here and you have that crossover style, it would sit up about here, which means, you can't see it from your mirror, looking in the back, you can't see what you wanna hook up in here when backing up and lining up to your rig. So this is gonna help you out, 'cause it's gonna be lower down. You'll be able to see over it and make that line up and connect way easier. Another thing would be it's gonna work well with ladder racks too, so you can still have those clamps on the bed rails, it won't interfere with that.

One thing that some people trying that to use with is tonneau covers. Be careful of that. We've tested on some trucks, if there's any kinda rails out here, it's not gonna work, 'cause either rails will be over the lid and you can't open the box at all or it's just not gonna fit in there with the rails in place. So we didn't really get to work with tonneau covers but the low and the visibility are gonna be great for fifth wheels. It was awesome to see how easy it was to line up with this box in.

The notch or cut in bottom here, gives you a little bit more room for those longer items you wanna throw in your truck bed. That's one thing I like about a crossover style is having that gap down there for ladders or lumber you wanna slide in. I like that this one cuts in a little bit and gives you just a little bit more space that maybe you fit one of those items in without hardly even trying to wedge it on top of the box or on the tailgate. Looking here on the side, there is still room to access your tie down points. So I think that's an important feature too.

You don't wanna cover those up, If you use them all the time. Look in the outside of the toolbox. It's gonna be a diamond plate aluminum. So it's gonna be shiny. It's gonna show some scratches and dents. Okay, that's something you don't wanna see as easily. I Would look at the matte black options. Those usually hide the scratches and that'll look better but it's a toolbox, so it's gonna happen. On the front of the toolbox, you're gonna have two latches. It locks on the driver's side but it can open if it's unlocked, it'll open from either side. So I'll pull on the latch, you see the lid pops up on its own. It's powered by those gas struts, push it up there. That's nice for if your hands are full of tools. let's say I got a bunch of tools here, I can reach in with this, grab that and then drop 'em in. I don't have to use both hands, all I use one hand to lift the lid. Something else that I wanna point out with the lid is, it is offset. So that means that the lid doesn't go all the way to the front of the cab. There's a gap here and that's so that the lid can open without coming into contact with the cab. So I'll show you. I'm talking about by pulling the latch, see, as it opens, there is still some space. You don't have to risk it hitting the cab or the back window. Looking at the latches. I'm gonna show you how they work in unison, just by pulling that and see they both move at the same time. That's that rod that connects both of 'em, that allows it. I like the shield. That's here in the middle. That way, when you throw heavier stuff in there, maybe you're not paying attention, you could risk damaging that rod and then that would disconnect them. Now it's protected by that. So if you throw something heavy in, it's just gonna bounce off there and not damage anything with the latches. Looking inside the toolbox, you're gonna have 10.8 cubic feet of space. So it does cut in a little bit here because you get that extra space on the outside, cuts in on the base on the inside but you can still see, we got a five gallon bucket here, still closes with it in there. So that's important. Some of the crossover ones don't have the depth to do that. So it's nice that you can fully load this. There's plenty more room in here. You see, we don't have it loaded to the brrim but we have some cases, a hammer. So, enough stuff in here just to show you and give you a better idea of how much of your stuff's gonna fit in here. Come here, at the side, at the gas struts, something I wannna notice, don't pile up your cargo too high to where it interferes. Some of the tool boxes have the strut have its own section. I kinda prefer that myself, just because when you go to lower, you have to worry about making contact with them. If you had anything stacked too high, maybe we move this bucket over and it was fully loaded. So it sticks up a little bit more. It would hit that and damaged the strut. But the cool thing with that is if that does happen, you can buy a replacement. So you'd measure from the eyelet to eyelet. It's usually 10 inches and you look on the side and it'll tell you the force pounds, it's 45. You can order another one of these on the site. So if something does happen and gets damaged you can replace it and the lid works like it's new. Another adjustable portion will be the striker up top. You can loosen these and adjust it side to side. So it's overtime as you slam that lid, it's just not closing like it used to, you can adjust that and get that working like new as well. On the outside of the lid, you're gonna see this foam weather strip, goes all the way around. That's gonna just help keep the elements out of the box. And then the lid itself is foam injected. So it's not just a hollow lid that where you go set something heavy on it, that's gonna dent or crush in easily. Looking at the lid, there's gonna be a bit of an overhang. It's not gonna just close here at the top of the box. I'm gonna push it down. You see it goes down over the toolbox. So it's gonna be way harder for those elements to go up and into the box. Looking at the top of the lid, it's gonna have a little bit of an overhang, so it doesn't just stop at the top of the box, it actually goes down quite a bit more, which is further gonna help the elements not go up and in. Overall, I really like this toolbox. I get why someone would need this over a crossover style. I used to always stay with the crossover just because it had that gap at the bottom to load those longer ladders or lumber. But this makes a lot of sense, especially with the fifth wheel to line that up when you're backing it up, this is gonna be the way to go. So it doesn't cut in your visibility. Another thing would be that you just get more in here in the toolbox, the five gallon bucket fits in there. You don't have to worry about it not fitting 'cause of the depth. It has a lot of room in there. It sits under the bed rail, so then if you got a ladder rack, instead of worrying about not having that gap down here, if you do have the ladder rack and throw the ladder and lumber up top too. So it does have its benefits versus standard crossover style that I used to prefer. But if you have all that stuff, I think this is the way to go. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and hope this helped..

Well constructed. Great customer service, great price and fast shipping. 2019 Toyota Tundra Crew Max. Looks right at home.

No surprises, this product was exactly as promised. Unit sits just below bed-rail height, perfect for 5th Wheels. Also makes it out of view for most part, although it looks great. Has remained water-tight through winter road trips and lots of space for all that stuff we carry 'just in case'.

by:

Excellent tool box and surprisingly durable, would purchase a second one but this one has more than enough storage space for a carry along tool box, all your fluids, straps, tire chains, and some other stuff??

by:

Toolbox arrived in a reasonable amount of time and was everything was as expected. I drilled my own holes to secure the toolbox to the bed of the truck, nice and clean look hidden from view about the bed.

Great box, good quality! Replaced an over the rail box to accommodate a ladder rack.

  • Can the UWS Truck Bed Chest Be Mounted On a Bed Rug/Mat
The UWS Truck Bed Chest part # UWS01040 would work best when in direct contact with the truck bed. If there was any sort of bed rug or mat used I recommend trimming this so the base of the toolbox sits against the bed floor. This will best ensure there is little to no movement. That said, you can certainly try to mount it atop a bed rug or mat to see if it says in place, there really aren't any strict rules for installation.

My research tells me that your 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty has a bed width of 66.9" and bed height of 21.5". I recommend looking into the UWS Truck Bed Chest - Wedge Series 12 cu ft - Gloss Black # UWS01048. For the bright aluminum version go with # UWS01040. This is an excellent truck bed tool box that has a built-in lock and comes with 2 keys. This is confirmed to fit your F-250 with 6-3/4' or 8' bed. • Does the UWS Truck Bed Chest # UWS01040 Come with a Tray
The UWS Truck Bed Chest # UWS01040 does not come with a tray. I reached out to my contact at UWS to see if their tray would fit and he said that the only way you can get a similarly sized toolbox with a tray is to use part # UWS04543 instead. This comes with a sliding tray but it is a crossover style so it would take up space on your bed rails.
