Safety Features

The Kwikee steps include several safety features in an effort to prevent injury to you or your passengers and damage to the RV steps. If an obstruction is detected while extending, the steps will halt and retract back into the stowed position. The steps will also retract when you turn on the vehicles ignition, even if the automatic retraction override has been activated, in case you forget to stow them before driving away.

Will Kwikee Electric Steps Work for You?

Electric steps are typically installed on RVs and some travel trailers. The electric steps from Kwikee install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Kwikee In and Out

The Kwikee electric steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 25-3/4" wide and 11-3/8" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 24-3/4" wide to 37-1/4" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

Outriggers for RV Steps

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Kwikee Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 6" to 8" to account for the drop from the bottom step to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays mounting bracket widths in the first column and entry height measurements in the second column. The third column shows the corresponding part numbers. Use the mounting bracket width and entry height measurements you took to determine which part number will fit your RV. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

Video Transcript for Review of Kwikee RV and Camper Steps - Kwikee Platinum Series Replacement Steps - LC372558

Michael: Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at the Kwikee Replacement Platinum Series, RV electric steps. These steps are going to replace the step motor and control unit for your Kwikee Platinum series steps. Now, if you're not familiar with Kwikee, it is a very popular brand with RV manufacturer. So, it's very possible that you already had a Kwikee Platinum series step construction on your RV.And if that's the case, this is an exact replacement for you.

So, it should hook up to all your wiring, and everything, exactly the same. It does have a 12 volt motor that's going to work with the gearbox to extend and retract the steps. So, anytime your door opens, the steps will extend out. When you close your door, they'll retract back in. There is a switch available that would override that system. So once you get to your campsite, you extend the steps and then override that.

So the steps just stay extended. And that way you don't have to wait for them to open and close every time you open the door, and you can just get in and out when, while you're at the campsite. And that is kind of a convenient feature, but it is not included with this kit. It is sold separately, but you might already have it on your system, depending on what components you're needing to replace. This set is going to also have the control unit that wires to your door and everything. You can see the plug here.

This is going to allow all those connections that when your door opens, the steps will extend out and also help to eliminate the light underneath, that we're going to talk about here in a moment. This is a four-wire piece here. Now, it's very likely that this will just plug right into your current wiring system, while you're removing the old steps. But if not, there is a four-way wiring harness available that is sold separately, that will plug right in there and give you the wires that you can then connect to your system. This does have the integrated safety features that will allow it to retract the steps if it we're to come in contact with something while it's extending. So, if you open up the door and the steps start extending out and they hit a post or something like that, if you're parked too close to a light post at the campsite, it will automatically start retracting back in to prevent damage. It also has the ignition override feature.

So if you start up the engine on your RV, the steps will automatically retract back in, so that you don't have to worry about forgetting them.Driving down the road and potentially causing damage with leaving them out. So, a couple of safety features there that this does have for you, and will be a nice option to make sure that everything's working correctly. This does have the amber light underneath here that's going to eliminate the steps, especially in those low light conditions. It's really nice to be able to see where you're stepping in to make sure that you have your footing, where it needs to be.You can see, we do have the non-slip tread here on the top that's going to give us a little extra traction. So, even in wet conditions, we're going to have sure footing again. And you can see, we do have those illuminated strips there to see where the edge of the step is. Again, just to make sure that we're not missing this step in the dark or something along those lines. Now these steps are nice and big.Our overall measurements, or our width, we're looking at right about 24 inches wide. And then for our depth, right just over 11 inches, about 11 and 1/8 of an inch. For our rise and drop, right at nine inches, from the top of one step to the top of the other step. Now that's just a little bit more than what you're probably used to most steps in your home and out and about are about eight inches, rise and drop.So that might feel like a little bit higher than what's normal, but it should still feel very comfortable, give you plenty of ease of access as you're getting in and out there. These are a really nice durable steps. They have a steel construction with a black powder coat finish. So they're going to be very strong. They've got a weight capacity of 300 pounds. So, good to let you know, they're going to be very durable for you. That that black powder coat finish is going to help resist rust and corrosion. So, it should last for a nice long time, stay looking nice and preventing any breakdown. But it is also made here in the USA. So, you can trust it's made to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US. So overall, just a really well-built system. And that will allow you to enjoy the steps for a nice long time trust that they're going to hold up well and do what you need them to do. Now, as far as getting these installed, it's going to be pretty simple. You can see on the top here, our mounting plate, we do have lots of different holes to accommodate different bolt spacing.A couple of things that you want to make sure if you already know that the platinum series from Kwikee is going to fit, probably don't have to worry about it too much. But for those of you who maybe aren't as sure of what kind of steps you have on your RV that you're wanting to replace, this mounting bracket here is an important measurement to know.So our overall width is going to be right at 23 and 7/8 of an inch, just shy of 24 inches wide. And then our width, looking at right about 11 and 3/8 of an inch. Now our bolt pattern, you can see there are several different kinds of bolts here, bolt holes there. The main bolt pattern that we're going to be looking at is from the front, up here, to this second from farthest back bolt. So, that is going to give us a full pattern of 22 inches wide by 8 inches deep. And then another measurement that's going to be important for you is the overall width to make sure that this will fit in your area. So, that is actually a little bit wider than our mounting plate. It's right at about 25 and 3/4 of an inch wide. So you want to make sure that you have enough room there. When these steps are extended out, like I have them now, they are from the bottom bracket here up to the top, our mounting plate. And that's going to extend out about 16 and 7/8 of an inch. So, kind of compare that to your current steps, make sure that that's going to match. Just give you that step down, so you can get in and out. When we have these retracted and folded up from that same point to the same point on our mounting bracket, it's going to drop down to 10 and 3/4 of an inch. So, should give you plenty of clearance. You won't have to worry about making contact with the road or anything like that. So, overall, just looking to make sure that you have the same kind of set-up that you currently have to ensure that everything is going to work properly. So, the sum of those measurements are very important for you to make sure that it's going to work for you. But overall, I think these are a really great option for you, very sturdy, basically taking all the worry out of it for you. So, you can get back to enjoying your time with your RV or camper,or out at the campsite. So, that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

I had the same steps but at 7 years they started failing and banging no matter how much they were cleaned and lubed. The new ones were exact plug and play wiring wise. Very hard to get the 2 outside bolts tightened but it’s all back to normal now.

Steps operate very smoothly in and out with no binding or banging.
