Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Ford Explorer - Draw-Tite

Today on this 2017 Ford Explorer, we're going to review and install the Draw Tite Max Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76034. Now our Draw Tite hitch is going to be a great addition to your Ford Explorer, whether for towing or non-towing needs. It does tuck up as close as we can to the bumper here and yes, you can see the cross tube, but it does go up behind the bumper as soon as possible. This does look like a part of the vehicle from the factory. This is our 2 inch opening right here, which allows for a wide variety of accessories for your towing or non-towing needs. It also has a nice rounded finish on this collar here to compliment the look. All right, now one thing unique to our Draw Tite here is that you'll see 2 holes in the side of the hitch.

The big hole here is actually used for all your accessories that use a 5/8 diameter hitch pin or your favorite locking hitch pin. Now this smaller hole here is designed for use with a J pin stabilization pin. That's great for accessories that do not have their own anti-rattle device. On the bottom of our hitch and each side we have a plate for safety chain loops, very generous so you can put about any hook that you want on there. The hitch itself is going to be rated for 4,500 pounds of pull weight and 675 pounds of tongue weight. The highest capacity of the tongue weight is going to be great for non-trailer loads like a cargo carrier if you're going to max it out, or maybe like a 5 bike carrier as well.

Now when you tow a trailer, using the weight distribution assembly, the weight values are going to change a little bit. You're going to have 500 pounds of tongue weight on the ball and then you're limited to 5,000 pounds of pull weight for your trailer. Also, you want to double check with your owner's manual or your dealer to make sure your Explorer can handle these kinds of weights. Next, we'll go ahead and give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of bumper is going to be about 4 3/4 inches. The top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 16 inches.

Now we'll go ahead and show you how we install the hitch. The first part of our install is to go ahead and get the vehicle ready to install the hitch. Let's take a look. First off, we're going to need to lower the exhaust to give us some working room. Also the exhaust brackets that go up to the frame, this bracket gets removed. This is on the passenger side.

Now we'll go ahead and take a look at the driver's side. The exhaust hanger bracket is part of this tie down bracket as well, so this whole assembly need to be removed. To lower our exhaust without damaging it, I'm going to actually use a strap, in this case a cam buckle strap, to go between the suspension springs, around the exhaust to hold it while we're working on it. We could also use this to help lower the exhaust once it's loose. Since we're by the back axle here, let's go ahead and remove this from our hanger. We'll apply some spray lubricant to it to help make it a little bit easier to remove. Then, we can use a pry bar to help push it off. We'll move on to the hangers at the end of the mufflers. This is our driver's side. Go ahead and spray it down and then the pry bar, help pull it off. Repeat same thing over on our passenger side. Now, we'll go ahead and lower the exhaust using my strap. That will give us more working room now. Now we'll go ahead and remove this hanger using an 18 millimeter socket. Now the rubber hanger here, we have to reuse this where it gets reinstalled on the hitch, so we'll go ahead and just pull this off and separate it. Now on my driver's side bracket here, there's a bolt on the side that we have to remove as well. Again, it uses the same 18 millimeter socket, and the 2 on the bottom. All right, now we can go ahead and install hardware and our hitch. We need this bolt here, this block and the provided bolt leader. Now for this installation we're actually going to put everything together on the outside. We'll run our bolt leader through the block, thread this onto our carriage bolt and we'll go up to the passenger side of the frame. At the very end of the frame, by the bumper, we'll go ahead and take this bolt, push it up into the frame, then our block and we'll pull it back through. We'll leave it just like that for now. The rubber hangers need to be installed on this part of the hitch. We'll take the provided carriage bolt here, which is the long one with the really long shoulder, we'll put that through just like that, rubber hanger goes on, flat washer and a lock nut. This is a lock nut so it will only go on a few threads until it stops. Then you'll need a tool to run it in the rest of the way. You hold the carriage bolt in place and then we'll use an 11/16 socket to tighten it down. Now when you tighten it applies friction to it but we can still move it around. Almost ready to put the hitch into place. We'll go ahead and install new hardware for that. We've got the metric bold here and with the conical tooth washer. Notice there's like little teeth in the washer, that always faces towards the hitch. Now we've got 4 of these to install, 2 in each side, so let's get an extra set of hands and put it up into place. Now, as we put it into place, you'll have to maneuver the exhaust, pull it down a little bit to get it up in there. We'll take our bolt leader, put it through the hole in the hitch that matches up and push the hitch up into place. It doesn't matter if you really push the bolt up into the frame because we can always pull it out later. Once we have one in each side holding it up, we'll go ahead and continue with the rest of them. Okay, we'll make sure this bolt here, with the bolt leader, is pulled through as much as we can. We'll go ahead and unthread this and that will get it's own nut and conical tooth washer. Now it may help to actually snug these bolts up a little bit to take up the slack. If you have more threads exposed it will be easier to get started. Okay, with all of our hardware in place, we can go ahead and snug down the bolts. We'll need a 3/4 inch socket for that. After the bolts are snugged down, we'll go ahead and torque them down as described in the instructions. All right next, we'll go ahead and reinstall our exhaust. We'll start on the driver's side right here. Spray down the rubber hanger with some more lubricant and we'll put everything back together. Then we can take our strap back off. That will finish it for our Draw Tite Max Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76034 on this 2017 Ford Explorer.

Received my Hitch really quick with the free shipping. Installation was straight forward following the instructional video produced by etrailer.com. As the video. suggests, its a good idea to have someone help while installing. Not having a vahicle lift, which will probably be the case for 99% of the people that order this product, once you have your SUV on jack stands, use the car jack to hold the hitch in place while you bolt it, it worked out great for me. Anyways...the product looks very nice once installed and im sure it will serve us well for many years. Very happy with my purchase from etrailer, will definitely order from them again. 284373

Great value - Easy to Install - Quality Product I'm no mechanic and have limited tools, but this installation on our 2017 Ford Explorer was an absolute breeze. I found the hardest part to be the removal to the exhaust hanger brackets and finding something to support the exhaust while I was putting the hitch into place. Easily a one man job, but having another set of hands to help out would be very beneficial. The staff at ETrailer were very helpful and went above and beyond answering all my questions. Overall this was an excellent first experience at ETrailer as well as the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch. Happy Customer! 315985

The product was ordered on Tuesday and arrived Friday morning. Excellent service I must admit. The only reason that this company was not awarded five stars is that the packaging was torn. Fortunately, none of the accompanying parts were lost due to this but, in my humble opinion, the product could have been packaged a bit better. The weight and configuration of the product (hitch assembly) could have been stabilized within the box a bit better reducing the opportunity for damage and product loss. Outside that minor issue, this company performed extremely well. I would recommend them and would do business with them if needed in the future. The product itself arrived with no physical damage and the small parts purchased at the time were within the package but one end of the hitch assembly was piercing the box and created a hole large enough for those items to have been released. 509568

First I want to say that etrailer is a great company to deal with! They have great prices, super fast shipping, and the communication is astounding (they emailed me when it was dropped offer at the post office, when it was leaving the post office, and when it was delivered to my front door) talk about service. Now on to the review of the hitch reciever. It fits great and slides right in place. I did 90% of the job solo just needed an extra hand from my wife to lift into place. It fits tight to the bumper and is resessed behind the lip of the bumper a bit which is nice it gives it a clean stock look which is why I chose this exact model and couldn't be happier. I bought this to tote my jetskis and have no doubt that it wont perform flawlessly. Thanks again etrailer you guys rock! 546420

Bought it and had a mechanic put it on for $75. He confirmed I should have no problems. I have used it consistently on our Ford Explorer with a double axle trailer loaded pretty heavy most times. I highly recommend it. 576298

First time buying from etrailer. My order arrived at my house faster than expected. Installation of the drawtite hitch on my 2014 ford explorer went exactly as expected- I followed the video tutorial on the etrailer website and was able to install the hitch by myself in just under 2 hours at home in my garage. I am NOT a mechanic, so I was relieved when my installation followed the video exactly. The video was well done, the hitch went on smoothly, and the parts appear high quality. I am very pleased with the purchase. I will buy from etrailer again. 456645

I wanted a receiver hitch on my Ford Explorer. The Ford dealer quoted me almost $500 installed! I decided to search on doing it ourselves and came across etrailer.com. I placed the order on line and we received it super quick. My husband installed it in a little more than an hour. The wiring harness plugged right into the factory output plug and was perfect. I highly recommend etrailer.com and this product! Very happy 431584

Mounted this hitch to my 2017 Ford Explorer XLT this evening. With setting up and then rummaging all over for my 18mm socket, the entire install only took about 1.5 hrs solo. Two people could get this installed in a much shorter amount of time. Since I was going it alone, I opted not to use my lift and instead used a floor jack as the second set of hands. Additionally, I put a bolt in each side to hold everything in place instead of doing one side, then the other like the video showed. Only ding I would give is the carriage bolts supplied with the hitch that are used for the exhaust hangers do not sit well in the holes of the hitch. This allows them to turn when tightening the lock nut. I used a pair of vice grips on the head of the bolt. But, there's not much purchase there. So, either a larger carriage bolt (or smaller hole) or a carriage bolt with a larger head to grab hold of. I also purchased the Tekonsha wiring harness number 118549. This, is where I ran into problems. The T-fitting does not fit my vehicle. It looks identical. But, when you attempt to connect either side, you find the two small alignment tabs are angled differently and the male harness fitting is the exact same dimension as the female vehicle fitting, thus preventing one from connecting. Waiting to resolve that issue now. All in all, very happy! 396808

2011 Ford Explorer

I bought a new 2011 Ford Explorer, I need to pull a small utility trailer. I bought this hitch from etrailer, this was so easy to install. It took about an hour to install by myself. Reading the directions, they were very easy to understand. The tips were very helpful too, soap was a very helpful tip to get the rubber isolators off the exhaust. I lowered the exhaust in the three places, and it fit perfectly. One thing I needed to do that was a pain was to do as they said, I should have tightened the bolts to # 6, 7, and 8 before I raised the hitch onto the car. I thought it only needed to be in place before installing. Make sure to put on the rubber isolators onto #6, 7, and 8 and tighten the set up before raising the hitch onto the car (it was a pain to tighten while hitch was up on the car. The hitch looks great, it is not ugly and works great. See attached pics. 24664

hitch itself looks good. It came when promised but I was not happy with some of the provided hardware. This required me to purchase some of the muffler hanger mounting bolts myself. Only a $5 expense but inconvenient none the less. The squared portion of the bolt in the picture is supposed to line up with a oval NOT ssquare hole on the hitch. Two problems 1. The squared of portion need to be deeper. It barley catches the whole its intended to be inserted in. 2. The hole itself is oval shape and a drop to big, causing the bolt to have too much play and making it very difficult to tighten the nut. See enclosed photo. 403042

Due to the sales rep not ordering my wife's 2017 ford explorer with the tow package (always inspect what you expect) I was forced to search for a hitch. Initially etrailer offered it at $160 which was more than I was willing to pay. After waiting a couple months the price dropped to a comfortable level. The package arrived in good shape (my e-150 hitch had chipped paint due to the shipper's carelessness). The hitch bolted up quite seemlessly, though being a mortal, it took me 2:24 (more than the :45 suggested). The bolt leader for feeding the hardware was an awesome addition to the installation and the wiring harness I also ordered was a breeze especially with the instructional video. I would place the wiring harness between the frame and the hitch. I didn't and you can see the missed opportunity in my pic. Also, the carriage bolt shoulder IS too small and needs to be standard length. In hind sight, I'd buy a standard carriage bolt like suggested in another review, but made it work with a crowbar. Having ordered the 4-way harness, I realize that it doesn't include a reverse wire, so be aware of that. Also, you will want a deep well socket for the new bushing carriage bolts. Not knowing this hitch came with a mounting bracket I also bought the 4-way plug bracket. The 4-way plug bracket was also an awesome addition. Buy some vinyl tube for the outside carriage bolt on this bracket (for sound dampening) and you'll be a happy camper. 572501

Most of the job was pretty easy and went quickly enough. Not including cleanup and initial setup getting my Explorer on the ramps, I spent 2 hours on this job. 1 hour of that was spent trying to tighten the 2 carriage bolts that hold the exhaust hangers. The nuts went on so hard that I couldn't stop the bolts from spinning even with channel locks and vise grips. I ended putting the heads in my bench vise, cranking the nuts down as much as I could, and then taking them off again. The assembly went together a little easier then but I still couldn't get them as tight as I wanted. Whoever is sourcing the parts for this kit must have gotten a great deal on these bolts. Regular bolts would have been much better. My 2016 Explorer is an XLT, not an Interceptor as shown in the video and there are only 3 exhaust hangers. 2 in back and 1 forward/middle. So, I took away 3 stars for using parts that made a simple job difficult. 574924

I received the product, and I had read the instructions and watched the video. I liked a lot the video because it showed me exactly how I had to install my frame-trailer-hitch. I didn’t have a way to lift my Ford Explorer but still I was able to install it without a single problem. It fit perfectly. The video was extremely accurate. Although I still haven’t used it for a bike rack, my main purpose of the purchase, I feel safer with a more real “steel fence” that I feel add extra safety to my driving. I had an accident 4 years ago where I was hit from behind, and if I had this before, the damage would have been much less. Very satisfied with my purchase. 512579

I found this hitch for a great price here on etrailer.com, with free shipping, and it arrived several days earlier than I expected it. This was my first order on etrailer.com, and so far, so good. I received an email from etrailer.com, confirming that the hitch was delivered, with some additional information about the hitch, installation video, and toll-free number in case I had any problems or questions. Great customer service so far, now I was eager to get out to the garage and install this thing! I am not one to read directions, and even though I'd never installed a hitch before, it seemed pretty straightforward. But given the importance of such a component, I decided to read the directions and watch the video, and I have to say, I was very impressed with both. The video was especially helpful, it gave me the exact sizes of sockets I'd need to use, and had helpful tips for removing the exhaust mounts from the rubber hangers. Armed with all this information, I went out to install the hitch. I didn't have a strap to support the exhaust as shown in the video, but because I was doing this without raising the vehicle, I used my floor jack to support the exhaust at the "Y" near the rear differential. I also used some rope, tied between the rear springs, to support the exhaust system, just in case. Removal of the existing components was exactly as described in the video, and about 15 minutes into the install, I was ready to attach the rubber muffler hangers to the carriage bolts on the hitch. This was about the only tricky part of the install, and I wish I'd seen some of the comments here before I spent any time on it. As other reviewers stated, the square shoulder on the carriage bolts were not quite deep enough, and when tightening the locknut onto the bolt, it kept slipping out of the hole in the hitch bracket. I tried holding it in place with pliers, but that proved unsuccessful. I then went to my trusty Vise-Grips, and that did the trick - I simply clamped them down to hold the head of the carriage bolt securely against the bracket. This worked out great, and I was able to tighten the nut down on each side with no further issues. Now on to mounting the hitch. Using the wire leader supplied, it was pretty easy to get the one bolt with backer plate into the proper location on the passenger side. Then I was able to position a jack stand under the center of the bumper, then carefully work the hitch up into position, and just had a helper to balance the hitch while I aligned and hand-tightened the 4 bolts in place. Then hand-tightened the nut onto the other bolt, made some minor adjustments to the alignment of the whole thing (there is a little play in the bolt holes, so I wanted it to be as close to "perfect" as possible), and then tightened all of them down with a ratchet. Finally got out the torque wrench and tightened everything down to the recommended spec, attached exhaust hooks back into the rubber hangers, and was ready to go. All in about an hour - couldn't have been much easier. The hitch looks great on the back, though like another reviewer noted, the driver's side exhaust tip now hangs slightly lower than the passenger side. Not all that noticeable unless you are looking for it (or unless you are a perfectionist like me...) This obviously has no impact on the performance of the hitch or the vehicle, so not too concerned about it. Thanks to etrailer.com for a great product, great customer service, and an excellent installation video! I'll post an update once we actually use the hitch - first trip is in a week or so, will just be hauling 4 bikes on a hitch-mounted bike rack, and I expect this to handle it with ease, and I feel good knowing this Class III is way more than what we need for that purpose. 544010

First off let me give the hitch a solid 5 star. It is solid and fits with no modifications involved. I used a little dish soap on the hangers and they slid right off my brand new 2017 Explorer. It looks good but does hang lower then the hidden OEM hitch but doesn't stick out as a sore thumb, so I consider this hitch to be well worth the money and would buy again and recommend it to others just read on for my complaint. I also used the CURT Manufacturing 56306 Custom Wiring Harness which was painless install except don't use the enclosed diagram of the plug connections as they don't match the plug color code they have on the plug, the color code works fine just follow the wire color and wire location. I added a 4 wire flat connector to the plug also and used wire ring lugs just in case the wires might vibrate loose. I also used the CURT 58000 Easy-Mount Electrical Bracket to mount the plug assembly which was also painless. I did the install alone and didn't have any problems installing it except for the below. It may help if you have a helping hand to lift and hold the hitch when the time comes to raise it but I had no problems by myself. Now the reason for the 2 stars I gave it. The bolt package is mostly good but the carriage bolts for the muffler brackets are a joke. The nuts are a locking type so they don't work off from vibration. That is well and good but the carriage bolts have a short shoulder, at least on the one's I got so when you try to tighten the nut it doesn't grab the square hole enough to let you tighten it. Hence the carriage bolt turns, I tried everything short of welding the bolt in place and gave up as I didn't have a welder. By this time the truck was torn apart and I had to find a store to get new bolts. Closest store to me, I live in a rural area, was about 1 hour away. Of course try to find a 7/16 carriage bolt, HD doesn't carry them. Next stop Farm Store, no luck there either. So instead of wasting any more time I just bought two 7/16 bolts. They did work in my case as there was clearance between the frame and mounting bracket and I could get a wrench on both sides to tighten to where it needed to be with the supplied nuts, if you go this route take the nuts with you to make sure you get the correct size bolt and the carriage bolt for length. So after a couple hours looking for bolts it took me quite awhile to install because of this. If the carriage bolts supplied would have worked I could have installed it in about 1/2 hour as I had the tools and place to install it. I WOULD ADVISE BEFORE YOU START ESPICALLY IF THIS IS YOU ONLY VEHICLE TO BUY THE BOLTS BEFORE YOU START. YOU WILL NOT KNOW IF THE CARRAGE BOLTS WILL WORK UNTIL YOU TRY TO INSTALL THE RUBBER MUFFLER ISOLATORS/HANGERS. Your vehicle is apart at this stage If the supplied bolts had worked and I didn't have to spend so much time looking for replacement bolts this job could have been done in less time that was stated for installation which is 45 minutes. Like I said a solid 5 stars for the hitch and 1 star for the hardware. 460408

Delivery was amazing. Ordered on Monday and had the products on Wednesday. I am 71 and a retired desk jockey but was able to install the hitch and wiring harness on my 2016 Explorer in less than 3 hours including my coffee breaks. I used a small hydraulic jack to lower my exhaust onto a car support and then used the same hydraulic jack to lift my hitch while I bolted it up. The install would have gone faster with 2 people but there were no problems doing the installation by myself other than using more time. My only suggestion would be for you to offer a completed package for the hitch and wiring harness installation. I searched your reviews and was able to get everything I needed including the extra long zip ties but after the installation was complete I realized that I forgot to order the tester. But everything worked great when I hooked the trailer up. Great product, great price, great delivery and easy installation. Why pay UHaul $400 plus or Ford $600 plus for the same parts and installation ? You can do it ! 384899

My drawtite hitch is better than expected. The service from etrailer was great. I called them several times with numerous questions during my product evaluation process. The staff is very knowledgeable and answered all my concerns. I was a bit unsure about the installation and thought about paying a shop to install. When the hitch was shipped, etrailer emailed several installation vids. Upon watching, I figured I could do it. Installation was a piece of cake. My son in law helped providing the extra set of hands. (Thanks Conrad!). I would highly recommend etrailer. 508010

The video etrailer had made installing strait forward. I had little difficulty putting it in, i did it by myself but as suggested lifting the unit in is so much easier with two people. Other then that everything works exactly as promised 728726

I love how there are videos on the etrailer website that explains the installation process in detail, including hints to make the installation easier (using a tie-down strap to secure the exhaust system). Customer service was excellent when I had an issue with the wiring! That alone makes shopping at etrailer a definite option in the future! 714170

This hitch receiver is exactly what I was looking for. I use it mostly for holding a tray/rack. When not in use it the structural frame is very well hidden and it integrates well with my Ford Explorer. 713922

Prompt deliver, easy install without lifting car took about 40 minutes and a second pair of hands just to help lift in place helps while you get a couple of bolts started 2 or 3 minutes is all you need help for. Fits perfect looks great, my second time buying from them would not go anywhere else great product and price. 715365

Exceptionally fast delivery after ordering. Installed the hitch the next day after I received it. Smooth as silk. All parts were there, and the directions for installation were very good. I think that makes 4 or 5 hitches I've purchased, and no problems with any of them. Did an "oops" on my part. I ordered the wrong wiring harness. My fault, not theirs. 711488

For $150 you can't beat it. The hitch is nice and solid and it was so simple to attach it. The etrailer step by step video made it a piece of cake. Used it for my bike rack this morning then popped my trailer on and both were sturdy. 698905

I had this hitch for about 9 months. It fit and looked awesome on my 2017 Ford Explorer. I mostly used it to tow my 18ft travel trailer. I recently got into a car accident and the car that hit me bent the hitch. This hitch was designed great because it took majority of the blow and saved my explorer from possibly a serious collision. I hope to get the same hitch again. 683940

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2017 Ford Explorer with Hands Free Lift Gate Sensor
  • Both the Draw-Tite # 76034 and Curt # C13386 trailer hitch receivers that are designed for your 2017 Ford Explorer will allow the hands free lift gate sensor to work. However, you will need to activate it by putting your foot to the side of the hitch receiver opening with both hitches. The sensors will not recognize your foot through the hitch unfortunately. I've linked videos of both hitches being installed for you. If you're going to be towing a trailer with the Explorer and need...

  • Comparing Trailer Hitches for 2018 Ford Explorer
  • The Draw-Tite Class III # 76034, the etrailer.com # e98867, and the Curt # C13386 trailer hitches that are available for your 2018 Ford Explorer all feature an extremely similar design and will mount using the same existing holes on the vehicle's frame. The primary difference between the three models are their weight capacities, which is why I recommend the Draw-Tite # 76034. It features the highest towing capacity of 4,500 pounds and tongue weight limit of 675 pounds, indicating a...

You would not need to relocate any sensors either. I've linked videos of both hitches being installed for you....

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2013 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor
  • First, we have had reports that Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" Item # 76034 does fit the 2013 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor model. When adding a 4-Way trailer connector, # HM40285, to the Explorer it does require a direct connection to the vehicle battery so it does have a powered converter. But your Explorer might be factory prewired for a trailer connector. Check under the vehicle for the factory wiring as shown in the video I have linked...

You'll have to move your foot to the sides of the hitch opening though to activate the lift gate. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. This hitch is rated for tongue weight (TW, which is down-force on the hitch) of up to 675-lbs and towing weight of up to 4500-lbs. • What Cargo Carrier fits on a 2017 Ford Explorer With a Moonroof?
  • I checked the owner's manual of your 2017 Ford Explorer, and because of your moonroof, the weight capacity of your roof is just under 45 lbs. Our lightest rooftop carriers weigh 30 to 35 lbs, not leaving you much room for cargo; because of this restriction, I would avoid using any type of roof-mounted carrier. You will also not want to use a cargo bag because it would have to sit at least partially on the glass roof, which is not recommended. The best solution for you to haul cargo on...
