Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Jeep Cherokee - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on the 2017 Jeep Cherokee, we're going to be taking a look at and also showing you how to install the draw tight custom fit class 3 trailer hitch receiver. This offers the 2" x 2" receiver tube opening. This part number is 75998.Now, here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, it offers a very nice clean look. That main brace on the hitch is going to be hidden behind the rear facia. Let's inaudible 00:00:28 drop down to our receiver tube opening now. It's going to have a bit rounded reinforcement color around the outside and our safety chain loops that drop down here, with large open holes for connecting whatever it is you might need to do.

Now this is a class 3 hitch, so it has the 2" x 2" receiver tube opening. It's going to make it an extremely versatile hitch for your bike racks, cargo carriers, wall mounts. To secure all those items in place, going to be using the larger 5/8 diameter pinhole that is located closer to the front of the vehicle. The smaller pinhole here is for use only with the J pin stabilization system, which, with the design of this hitch, might be the preferred option for an anti-rattle device or maybe one of the quiet hitches from Roadmaster that would go around the top here. But as far as your regular standard 5/8 diameter pin, shouldn't have any issues getting that put in place. No, whether you're using the hitch with just a standard ball mount or with a weight distribution set up, it's going to offer a 500-pound tongue weight rating. That's the maximum downward force that we can put at our receiver tube opening. And it gives you a 5000-pound gross trailer weight rating, so that would be the total weight of your trailer and anything that you loaded up on it. Of course, you want to check the owner's manual on the Cherokee to see what its tow rating is and use whichever set of numbers is the lowest. Now, a few measurements that will be helpful when it comes time to select your ball mount, bike rack, or your hitch cargo carrier.

From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, we've got about 13 inches. Then, from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 3 1/4. Now, to begin our installation, we will need to remove the beauty rings that are here on the backside of the facia, if yours is equipped. Some will have it. Some won't.If you do have it, they're going to be three screws. We've got two on each side.

You've got two here on the bottom, one on each side, one here, one here, and then directly above it in the middle, you'll have the third. So, we will start by taking these out down here. And the one on top, you're probably going to need an extension cord to get to that. Once that is out, just going to tilt it down and out of the way.And we will do the same thing for the passenger side. Next, we will get our exhaust lower down, out of the way. We want to support this with a strap, so that after we take the hangers out, it doesn't fall too far down. Now, on each side of the muffler, back here at the very back of the vehicle, you will see the exhaust hanger that goes up to the frame.

To take these out, we will use a 13 mm socket. And we will hang onto our bolts so we can reinstall them later. Now, if we pull rearward slightly on the exhaust, we are going to get the end of the hanger rod past that upper crossbar. We want to do that on both sides. And then we will lower our exhaust down some. Now we have the rear facia support. That's going to be the black piece of plastic that runs all the way across. It has four screws in it, right along the top. We will take those out with an 8 mm socket. Now, on the outside corner on each side, we have got our 7 mm bolt there to remove. Now we need to push up on the tab tabs, and pull back on that support. And we will do that all the way across the rear of the vehicle here. Now we want to measure to find the center portion of the rear facia here, and we're going to go 3 1/2 inches from the center. So we will go out an inch and three-quarters each direction. I usually make it about an eighth of an inch larger on each side. Then from the end of our tabs here we want to come up 4 inches. Now it's time to square up our lines, and we will get rid of this section. Now, we will just use a sharp knife. We will begin to score on our lines there. Once you have scored enough, you should be able to cut through it there. Just want to square everything up, make sure our cuts look good. Now, on each side of the vehicle, we need to pull the rubber plug that covers up the square hole. And we are also going to use a trim panel tool or a screwdriver to pop off the wiring harnesses that are on the frame rail on each side. Now, outside of the frame rail on each side, you're going to see this caulking material. Sometimes it's on there really thick. Sometimes it's really thin. But if it is thicker, like what we have got here, we need to trim that off to allow the room for our hitch to go in place. Just want to bring your knife in behind it and then you can go right down the seam. You should be able to pull it off of there. Now we just go and do the same thing over on our passenger side. Now we're going to use our bolt leader to get our hardware into place. We are going to be using one of the square hole spacer blocks, one of the carriage bolts. We want to come out of this hole with our bolt leader. We want to bring a bolt right here to the attachment point, right up on the side of the frame from that same spot, and then finally covering up the square hole there. So bring that in and through. Put your square hole spacer block on, and thread on the bolt. Then we can slide the spacer block in, follow that up with our bolt, and bring it down through just like that. I will do the same thing to the hole on the side. We want to bring it up and through and then just let it rest back in the frame, so once we get our hits in position, we can pull it through to hold it.Last thing we will do is the reverse pull method for the last attachment point. So we will put the spacer block on our wire and thread on our carriage bolt. The bolt will go in first, then our spacer block, and then we will pull that right down through, like that. Then we will go do the exact same thing for our passenger-side attachment point. Now with our hardware in place, we will get the help of an extra set of hands. We want to bring our hitch up over the exhaust, and we will start feeding our bolt leaders down through their appropriate hole. We need to bring it up behind our facia here. And then with it raised up high enough, we can pull that bolt in the side out. We can let our hitch rest there and get our hardware started. We are going to place on our conical tooth washer with the teeth facing toward the hitch and thread on one of your hex nuts. Do the same thing for our other two attachment points on this side and the three on our driver side. Now, if you happen to have a very large gap right here on the side, they did supply a couple of lock washers that you can put in there to take up that gap. Ours seems to fit really well, so we are not going to mess with it. We will take a quick look.We want to be sure our hitch is centered, and we will go through and snug down all of our hardware. Now we will torque those down to the specifications, which are listed in our instructions. Now on each side we are going to use the hole in the forward section of the hitch there to secure our wiring harnesses, keep them from moving around. Now we are ready to raise that exhaust back up into position. We just need to realign the holes in the exhaust hangers with the holes in our frame rail there. And that will allow us to resecure it. We will pull down our strap. Now we can get our rear facia support put back into position. And we need to check this, just to make sure that it's going to have enough room behind the hitch here. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. This one looks like it's going to be fine.Put a couple of the screws in it up here on top just to hold it in position. And we will get all of our fasteners back in place and secured down. We will squeeze the two pieces together to get all of our tabs to click in position and then we will go through and tighten down our screws. Now we will get our exhaust kind of beauty rings or flanges put back on. We want to slide them kind of back up on the exhaust and then push them rearward, aligning all three of the holes. Best to get the two on the bottom set and then reach up and start the top one. Now we can get those secured. Now with everything resecured, that's going to complete our installation of the draw tight max frame custom fit class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number 75998 on our 2017 Jeep Cherokee.

Fast delivery, excellent product and packed well. For me, this definitely was a two person job. The instructions don’t say anything about putting the backing plate for the facia back on but does say return it to the owner. I didn’t like the way the facia flapped around without the backing plate so I did some cutting (picture) and reinstalled it, much better. 617648

Additional modifications to hidden panels required on 2019 Jeep Cherokee that presumably does not exist on 2018 model (according to the how-to video viewed on this site). Bolts, placement, etc. all perfectly align and is simple enough for any d-i-yer, however, I would have preferred to see a video of the install on an actual 2019 Jeep Cherokee so that there would have been no surprises as I encountered during the install. The look is great! I love not having to see the horizontal bar - only the hitch. No clearance challenges so far on hang down either. 599709

the hitch went on easy, but it does require two people to get it lined up. Only thing wrong with the instructions was that they had me cut the hole in the facia to tall.. I think a 3.5 in by 3,5 in hole would look better. 475792

Installed on a 2019 Jeep Cherokee overland. This is a solidly constructed hitch and hides all but the receiver nicely. The instructions and video from etrailer are spot on. The recommendation for using bolts for the rivets is definitely easier as well. I installed this in about 2.5 hours, on the floor to help with height, since I was solo. Two people would make this far easier to line up, but its possible by yourself. The hard plastic piece (4:05 in the video) can be reinstalled with some creative cutting. Essentially, I cut it in half and notched the ends on both sides to fit into the hitch bar and around the receiver. The fascia flaps too much for my taste without reconnecting it to that hard plastic piece. 636124

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude
  • The Draw Tite trailer hitch part # 75998 is a confirmed fit for your 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and would be a great choice I recommend. It has a 2 inch opening which means it has great towing capacities at 5,000 lb towing weight and is the size that most hitch accessories are made for. It also has only the hitch opening visible which gives it a more concealed look. See attached picture. For trailer wiring then you'd want then the T-One kit part # 118779 which is a confirmed fit as...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2019 Jeep Cherokee with Dual Exhaust
  • Out of the available options for your 2019 Jeep Cherokee with a dual exhaust I recommend going with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13395. Since all of the options exceed the max weight ratings of a 2019 Cherokee it really just boils down to looks and functionality. The Curt # C13395 is designed so that only the receiver is showing and is rated 5 out of 10 for installation as opposed to the 8 out of 10 rating for the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75998 which has the same type of design...

  • Available Hitch for a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude
  • I have found a solution to your question. Unfortunately, the Reese hitch you referenced does not fit you 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. The Reese hitch was designed to fit a 2011 Ford Ranger small size pickup. We do carry a hitch that will work for your Jeep. They are similar designs as they are both 2 inch hitches that only have the hitch opening visible. The biggest difference is that they are made by two different manufacturers, Curt and Draw Tite, the Curt has higher towing capacities at 5,000 lbs trailer and 750 tongue weight vs Draw Tite 5,000/500, and the Curt is made in the USA. Also worth noting is the Curt costs a...

  • The lower fascia on the back of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee curves, not straight up and down, so the reason there has to be trimming is because of how gentle that curve is and how long it curves. If the fascia went from vertical to horizontal like an L shape there would be no trimming. But it sort of gently curves down so trimming is required to install the hitch. It should be sturdy and not move to hit the muffler if torqued to the correct specs, which you can see in the linked directions.
