Extensive Testing

InfiniteRule products undergo extensive third-party testing to determine shear strength. The shear strength is determined by placing the locking pin in a stress position and subjecting it to increasing force until a required proof load (maximum force received without deformity) is met or the pin fails. This lock has a shear strength of 42,000 lbs.

Video Transcript for InfiniteRule Stainless Steel Hitch Lock Review

Hi there, heavy haulers. Today, we're going to be taking a look at InfiniteRule's line of locking hitch pins. These are available for either two-inch hitches, like we're showing off today, two-and-a-half-inch, or three-inch hitches. The three-inch hitch pin is available with either a three-and-five-eights inch span or a three-and-seven-eighths inch span.Choosing the correct span for your hitch is important because we want it to have a nice, snug fit. We really don't want it to be able to slide in and out a bunch because where it slides through our hitch here, it's going to be a smaller diameter than our end pieces here, which means it's going to be easier to cut off than it would be if they had to cut here or here. Plus, if they cut here, there's still a lip here that would prevent them from being able to pull it out.

If you we're to cut on the other side of these, where it slides through the hitch, you can easily just pull the pin out. So by matching it this way, it makes it very difficult for someone to come along and cut this off and take whatever's in our receiver. We just replaced the customer's old locking pin because the old one, they couldn't get it off because it was all rusted up. You can see their old pin here. We don't have to worry about that with this new pin. We're using this pin to solve an issue.

The issue was that the old one rusted up, and they couldn't get their key in there anymore to take it off. This one being stainless steel, they're not going to encounter that issue. We did just talk about the span too and cutting it off, and this one here is going to be much more secure than our old one. This old one here, while it was the correct span length, it didn't really matter what this style of lock because with this one, we've got metal all the way through. But our locking head here is plastic, so while this was tucked up against the hitch really easily, I was able to cut it off in just a few seconds with my Sawzall, just running it right down. It cut right through the little plastic area there, and then it cut the end right off, and I was able to slide it out.

On our new one here, it's so snug, there's really not even a way to get your blade in there, to be able to do that. And if you we're to, again, cut it off right here, you still wouldn't be able to take the pin out because you'd had that lip there. And it's the same way over on the opposite side. Now, regardless of which size pin you get, it's going to have a sheer strength of 42,000 pounds, which is going to be higher than anything we're ever going to be pulling with our truck. We've got our weight distribution set up here, and we're pulling a travel trailer with this truck, and this pin's going to have no problem handling that. To give you an idea of this trailer here that we're pulling with this truck is nearly 10,000 pounds.

It also has a better locking design than our old style. One you can see here, the dust cap on this one was either non-existent or fell off a long time ago, which allowed the lock to corrode up.But the lock inside this one is kind of a traditional locking mechanism. When you turn it, you just turn it, and then the lock can pop off. With that style, it is actually fairly easy to break these. You can jam something in there and turn it. And all you got to do is make it turn, and then you can take this off. But with this style here, it's not going to be nearly that easy to break the lock and do so because this is a threaded lock style. And I know it may seem inconvenient at first that you have to twist this to take it off, but the security you get with it greatly out weighs the little bit of extra time it takes you to unthread it. Because you see here, somebody would have to break this and turn the entire way, and it's just much more difficult to actually break this and something stay in there, being able to unthread the bolt. Because if it breaks and the bolt is still threaded in, then they're just turning nothing, and it's not going to come off. You can see here how it's threaded on. So this really gives us an extra layer of protection, even though it does seem like it might be a little bit inconvenience.Another feature they've added to ensure that our new lock doesn't end up like this rusted old one here, is they've placed a rubber seal around it here. And you also notice that this is machined to a square with round edges, just like on the inside, so everything fits together very snug and helps keep out any moisture, dirt, and debris, so we have nice, smooth lock operation for many years to come.I also like the ends that we have here. You can see how we've got a nice, kind of concaved machine surface here. This is nice and easy to grab, to pull it in and out, and we've got grooved surfaces over here, to ensure we can grip it when pulling it off. Our old style had the kind of little more than a 45 degree bend in it, and I actually don't prefer the kind that has that because when you put it in, it's going to hit things, and it's not as smooth. But this one, we can slide it in, and we've got a lot more room for our hands to get in there because we don't have that angle. And the minimalist design of this here, where it's not having that angle and all that, and you can see here that this head is significantly smaller than our old one, also makes it much easier to get our safety cables and things like that hooked up. Because especially if you're hauling something big, like we are, large safety cables can sometimes interfere with large locking hitch pin heads. There's also a dust boot on it, to keep out any dirt, debris, and moisture from the locking mechanism on the other side, so we don't have to worry about that. Now, it is stainless steel, so it shouldn't corrode, but you still don't want to get dirt and debris in there because that could cause binding issues and things like that. So we've got a protection level there as well.

I use this lock on a 3" receiver hitch on my F350. The span on all of the other locks I've tried were to short and would not engage or lock in place.
