Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Axles - Leaf Spring Suspension - 8327834-EB

Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at Today we're taking a look at the Dexter trailer axle with electric brakes and E-Z Lube spindles. Now, this is going to be a pretty much complete system to replace our axle on our trailer if something happened, it got damaged, bent, or broken, or something happened to it, or to fabricate a new trailer with a matching axle for our application. The axle has a max weight capacity of 7,000 pounds and the measurement from the hub face to hub face is 95 inches, so fairly long, heavy duty axle for our trailer. If you want to go from the spring seat to spring seat, for that measurement, it's going to be 80 inches wide. Again, going from the center of each of those, they are welded to the bottom of the axle, so that's going to give us an underslung design, and that helps to just drop our trailer deck a little bit lower, which makes loading things onto it a little bit easier. If you think about it, if you have your trailer up here, and the ramps are out at kind of a steep angle, if you drop that down, it also brings our ramps down at a more gentle angle, and it makes things a lot easier to roll up onto it, so that's the advantage with loading and unloading with that lower deck height there. Now again, we do get our hubs, the cap, the brakes, and all the hardware to get that attached.

Our spindles are going to be E-Z Lube, so the cap that comes with it is also an E-Z Lube design, which just means it has that little rubber piece in the center, so you can just pull that out to put a grease gun on there and do that maintenance to keep everything lubed up as you're going down the road. Take that off, see there's that grease there for our E-Z Lube spindle, so that's a really nice design, so you don't have to worry about pulling everything out to make sure that everything's greased up properly. You can just pop on your grease gun, pump it up, and you're good to go.Now, whenever you initially install it, you will want to make sure that you pack those bearings full of grease by hand, or with a bearing packer, but typically doing it by hand is really the best way to go. That way you make sure that you get all those little cracks and crevices filled with grease before you hit the road. This does come with a tube of marine grade grease, so you should be set there.

You only need to pick up a grease gun to make that happen, whenever you're ready to do that maintenance. We'll have all the bearings, seals and races to come with this. The races are installed into the hubs. You don't have to worry about doing that yourself. The brake inside there is going to be an electric brake, so we'll also have our wiring connection to make as well. Comes with the lugs and the lugs for our wheels, and the studs to get our brakes attached.

So, pretty complete kit here.As far as the other specs with this, again, 7,000-pound capacity hub face to hub face is 95 inches, or the spring center to spring center is 80 inches long. Our hub dimension, it's going to be 12 inches in diameter, and two inches wide. The bolt pattern on there is an eight, which is eight studs on six and a half, so that's the distance from the center of one stud to the center of the opposite one on the other side, so that six and a half inches there. That gives us eight on six and a half. The axle tube diameter is three inches.

The grease cap outer diameter is 2.72, about two and three-quarter inches. That wheel stud diameter is going to be a half inch for each one of those studs, and this works with wheel sizes of 16 inches. The whole kit comes with a limited five-year warranty, and it is made in the USA. I mean, this is going to be a really nice kit to have everything ready to go. It's all going to wear the same. You don't have to worry about one thing getting a little bit more worn out than the other, so it's a really nice way to have all new stuff to pop on your trailer and have everything fresh and ready to go.But that's going to do it for our look at the Dexter trailer axle with electric brakes and E-Z Lube spindle.

have had for over a year, carry heavy loads, work great 726535

The product was all in good shape. The only problem I had with this was that I did not see anywhere in the description that the hubs and brakes were not already installed on the axle itself. I am used to ordering the axles pre-assembled so I was not ready for that since the picture shows a complete assembly. I bid the job out thinking it was that way. So I could not charge for the labor to put it together. All in all it was good, I just have to remember next time that there will be work getting it ready for install on the trailer. 721353

The axle and wheels have been on my trailer for a year. The brakes are responsive and powerful, and react well to the brake controller. The wheels have been excellent, and the rims are true and work great. I do t have anything bad to day about this setup!

  • Can I Upgrade from 6 Lug to 8 Lug Wheels to Help Increase Weight Rating of my Trailer?
  • Because the total weight capacity of your trailer is limited by the lowest rated component, your axle capacity won't be increased by adding hubs with more lug nuts to the equation-even if they are rated higher than the axle. Moving to 8-lug hubs sounds like you want to move from 5,200-lb axles up to 7000-lb axles. • Trailer Axles to Replace Mobile Home Axles on Car Hauler Trailer
  • Mobile home axles are made for transporting such a dwelling only one time, to its permanent location. But they really are not suitable for ongoing use on a trailer.
