Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • Dually Tire Chain Recommendation for Tire Size 245/75-17
We have dually tire chain setups for your tire size of 245/75-17 like the Titan Twist Link set part # TC4231 which will work really well, but since cable setups are more designed for emergency use they aren't typically used on heavier duty vehicles like duallys. They don't typically last very long so I wouldn't recommend that route for yours with a cab over camper. The twist link setup I mentioned is a great choice if you want a smoother ride quality and the V-bars part # TC4831 are great...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for Toolcat with Snowblower on Paved Surfaces
The ToolCat has a very aggresive tread pattern, so for a flat drive I would recommend working it without chains. For the best performance, I would recommend going with the Pewag All Square Tire Chains, # PWE3210SC, that you referenced. The square link chains have an edge that will help grip on ice and in heavy snow conditions. These will be likely to mark your drive some. The in between option is snow cables like Glacier # PW3010C. I suspect these will only give you a bit more traction...

I have linked the page to all your options for 31x10.5-15 tires. If you have minimal clearance on the inside of your tire between the frame and sidewall, then the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW3010C are your best option. If you want the best traction, then the Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains with Cam Tighteners for Wide-Base Tires # PWE3210SC are the best option and have the integrated adjusters. They will provide the best traction in snow and mud. I've attached a couple articles...

  • 2017 Audi Q7 Snow Cables Recommendation Tire Size 255/55-19
We do have tire cables that fit your tire size of 255/55-19 with the part # PW3010C. For a snow traction device that fits your tire size that offers even better clearance, traction, durabiliy, and ease of install the best option is the Konig K-Summit part # TH2004565767. These don't drape over the inner sidewall of the tire at all so the clearance affected is minimal.

  • Installing Tire Chains on 2013 Honda Pilot
I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2013 Honda Pilot. Under the "Winter Tires" section of the manual it states that chains should ONLY be used on the front tires. The two most common tire sizes for your Honda Pilot are a 235/60-18 or 235/65-17. If you have one of these sizes on your vehicle I recommend the Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains # TC2319. These square-link chains feature integrated tensioners to allow for an easy yet secure installation. They...

  • Do Tire Chains or Cables Offer Better Traction and Which is Better
Actual tire chains are better than cables. Chains offer better traction and longer life. They also seem to be more corrosion resistant. Some chains are easier to put on that others. The same goes with cables but the cables are lighter. Cables are good for occasional use but if you need chains frequently then going with actual chains is preferred. Some vehicles require chains or cables that do not stick out from the tire very far because of limited clearance between the tire and vehicle....

If you don't want to go through the expense of a second set of K-Summit you could use cables # PW3010C which are Class S rated meaning they require little clearance around the tires. For your tire size of 245/75R16 I'd recommend the Titan Tire Chains part # TC2323. These will provide you great traction in the snow, will get you past checkpoints, are easy to install, and are pretty inexpensive as well. Ideally you run them on the front and back axles, but at the very least you'd need to run them on the back axle.

  • Recommended Use of Snow Cables on 2013 Toyota Highlander AWD
When it comes to use of snow tire chains on a vehicle the auto maker always gets the final word. That said, often the language in owner's manuals is fairly ambiguous regarding use of tire chains since tire sizes can vary on a vehicle and that can have a significant impact on the sizes and types of chains that are permissible. The issue generally comes down to the amount of clearance within the wheel wells and if this is adequate to allow for a tire chain to fit without damage to brake...

  • Snow Chains or Cables for Snow Trip with 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude
For your 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude I definitely recommend tire chains over cables. Snow cables will work in a pinch but they won't provide near the traction of chains and they really are only made for temporary use. For your upcoming snow trip where you will likely be on a lot of snow covered roads, chains are just going to provide you with a much better overall experience. For your 225/60R17 tires I highly recommend the Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # TH01594240. The D-shape...

I can think of no better illustration of the principle "you get what you pay for" than a set of tire chains. Tire chains differ substantially in their construction and features. In some cases the most basic no-frills chains will suffice if the intention is just to have some in the trunk to meet a legal requirement. But on the other hand, if for example you're a serious skier who travels to the slopes on a routine basis and you fully intend to install and use the chains on a frequent basis...
