Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

These are not as easy to mount as I'd hoped if you're mounting them in bad weather...good luck! Recommend other customers select something more user friendly even if it costs more.

Being an all wheel drive vehicle, they only fit on our rear tires. I was told they should go on the front, but the rear seemed to work out.

2015 Honda Pilot

This product had good review so I purchased, however I do not recommend using for SUV or regular sedan. I put them on my 2015 Honda Pilot at Sequoia National Park and there were not enough traction. My tire spun but we were only going side to side. It fit perfect and looked really good, it was easy installation.
I had to go down to town and purchased a different type of chain. The thick linked chain type and it worked great. As I was driving into the Sequoia Park, there were at least 5 vehicles stranded either chain broken, or not enough traction and spun side to side. They all were using the similar type of chains as these.

Phil, thanks so much for your review and your business. You would need to check your owners manual, but according to the manual I found online, cable chains are the only tire chains recommended for the 2015 Honda Pilot, therefore, use of any other chains would be at your discretion. The snow chains should be installed on the front wheels.

Ford Explorer

Used the cables last winter, it was particularly snowy so had to drive about an hour with the cables on, which is unique for California. The only issue I had was the locking mechanism kept coming loose which loosened the cable and caused some thumping. It's a little complex getting the orientation right, but never had a traction problem. These were used on a Ford Explorer and were pretty easy to get on and off.

Thanks for the follow up William. I did want to let you know that a set of adjusters something like the # PW105 might help with the fit issues you are noticing.

Hi, Nice quality of tire chain which fits different sizes and nicely fits my Hyundai Santa Fe SE tream 18 inch tires. Installation is easy with available tension system which allows you to make a tension of chain without any extra tools. Nice looking and does not touch the rims. Highly recommended.

Hi I have the same vehicle with the same size tires. Did you purchase the rubber adjusters and use them? I dont want to spend on items that wont be needed. Thanks in advance!Ed

Patrick B.

12/28/2013

Damir did not purchase the rubber tensioners to go with the chains. The chains do have a tensioning lever built-in and since your wheel size is on the high end fo the fit range, it should be enough. However, Glacier strongly recommends using the tensioners. Keeping the chains perfectly tight and removing all slack yields better traction and can prevent damage caused by loose chains.

I haven't had to use the product yet, but my experience with etrailer to shop, purchase and receive the item was excellent, and just in time for my road trip to Lake Tahoe!

First time i deal with a vendor that is so efficient. Called their helpline to get info on the right size of rubber adjustors i needed for the PW2029C snow chain tires. Mark M. answered my question and gladly asked me if he could finish my order that i had started online. I think when you call a place like this and they offer such great service, you will still order their product even if they charge taxes and delivery for out of state orders. Thank you Mark M. for great service and my order arrived as promised, ready for the snow this weekend.

Hello there, have only test fitted the chains. Did not use them since roads were cleared. I would recommend the larger rubber adjustors.

I am writing this after recieving a 1 year follow up email from etrailer. I purchased tire chains "just in case" for a trip to the mountains last year and have not yet had to use them. They are a quality product that I have kept for that purpose. I have ordered from trailer in the past and would do so in the future. Great customer service!

2018 Lexus RX 350

I bought these tires for a Christmas trip and drove a long 18 hours to visit family. I was very pleased with the service from staff at Etrailer as they understood my concern to have it shipped to me in time to make my trip. I tested the chains out for my lexus rx350 and the chains fit perfectly. I did not end up going through any snowing days so I did not have to use them thankfully, but I will keep them for any future trips and I am glad they fit my tires because my greatest concern was the fit as there were so many options online and trailer was one of the few that allowed me to find the right chains by choosing the type of car i have.

by:
2007 Honda Pilot

Chains arrived very quickly, faster than predicted and anticipated. Great communication from eTrailer, and lots of info on website

The chains do fit onto the front tires of my 2007 Honda Pilot EX, but I had to make an alteration to keep the interior hook from hitting the strut tube, which is very close to the tire. I flattened the "F" shape hook down to a much flatter profile, which seems to work, although it is still very close to the tube upon rotation.

I think these are a good product, but you might consider looking into the 'V' profile version as another option, if the clearances of the interior latch might be better.

Overall, fantastic company, great customer service, would highly recommend them. I will post pictures or updates as I use the chains more often.

2017 Toyota Highlander

I purchased the cables for a family trip to Telluride, CO. I am glad i did as the day before NW Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico we’re hammered with a massive winter storm. The cables were exactly what we needed to get us safely to our destination. The cables have held up flawlessly and have worked perfectly on our winter time family trips since then! I was pleasantly surprised on how well our 2wd 2017 Toyota Highlander performed with the snow cables on, and how well I was able to maintain traction and control. We took some of the sketchiest yet most beautiful roads on or way to Colorado! I led point with our caravan of 5 vehicles, and had the fewest issues with traction. I literally passed hundreds of vehicles, some more capable than our little 2wd rig. Thank you all for providing such a great product that helped keep my family safe!!!

by:
Honda Pilot

The product looks good and is well packaged. I need to wait for a good winter storm before I need to use them on my new AWD Honda Pilot TrailSport. So, I don't really know yet how easy they will be to install and how well they will improve traction, but I am planning for success.

2013 Kia Sorento

While I cannot make a comparison with other models of chains, I bought the PW 2029C as an alternative to the PW1046 which has a keeper tab for the abutments while the PW 2029C has a tensioner which provides for easier tightening in snowy road conditions, in my view, and keeps the lead chains flat against the sidewall, which the single keeper tab on the 1046 does not necessarily; although I did not experience slippage with the 1046, I worried about it.. So while both work well in my limited use, I feel much more secure with the PW2029C and its ease of assembly onto the tires, and in tightening the chains. Purchasing the multi-arm rubber adjuster I would also recommend for difficult and prolonged conditions. Customer Service at etrailer were helpful and knowledgeable and should be contacted with any questions prior to purchase.

2015 Ford Transit T250

Overall the tire chains seem pretty decent, but the way they assemble to the tire seems a sketchy. I put them on the other day to test fit them and they are extremely loose at their tightest setting. Luckily about the extra tensioners for 12 bucks which seems to help a ton. I’ve yet to use them other than in the driveway, I’m definatly a bit secpitcal about them coming loose or falling off. The carrying bag for it ripped on my first attempt to open it. Trailer was great for a supplier, quick shipping and great customer service, not 100% sold on the product tho

2015 Honda Pilot

Bought the Glacier cable chains and rubber adjusters for my '15 Pilot 4WD as a "just in case" part of my prep to drive up north to Idaho Falls but the trip didn't happen. Delivery was timely. Did a static fitting but did not roll on the cable chains. Looked good but hard to tell without rolling on them. So for now, they're in the bag nice and clean.

Thanks for the follow up.

Tire cable chains were useless when I needed them on Ice. They are a cable model with mini pipe on the cross cables, that roll not dig or scratch on ice. Can not use.

1. Super fast shipping - earlier than estimated delivery date.
2. Excellent customer service - they follow up with every process: after order received, after product shipped, after product delivered, follow-up and feedback. The website also share plenty of information about product review and instructions.
3. Great product - with easy carrying bag and detailed instruction.
4. Great price - this is the cheapest price I found online.

Will definitely recommend etrailer.com. :)

Did a dry test on my snow tire. the chains fit well, the only negative is that it is very difficult to latch the cable tightener onto the cable. I modified the opening with my grinder and it works well now.

by:

Just what I needed. Easy to use, fast on, fast off, and priced right. My vehicle has low clearance between the wheels and fender wells, so these cable chains are the way to go. I'd recommend them.

Doing Business with Etrailer was easy in easy out....no gimmicks and free shipping was an early present. I hope I don't have to use the tire chains but if I do - I know I can count on them to do the job. The tire chains have improved over the years and these look like they can without any doubt do the job!

I just received the product and have not had a chance to try it out, but it looks sturdy and well-made. The instructions are thorough and easy to follow. Buying cable chains from etrailer.com has been a good experience. The website makes it easy to find the chains and cables that fit your auto's tires. Shipping was prompt. They seem to be a friendly and courteous bunch at etrailer.com.

This isn't an uncommon problem to have, and I have the perfect solution for you. • Low-Profile Class S Snow Chains for 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van 2500
The low-profile-type of snow chains referred to in the manual for your 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 Van with LT245\75R\16 tires are referred to as Class S snow chains. This type of chain is designed for vehicles whose wheel wells have limited clearance and where standard chains might interfere with brake or suspension components. Please note the chains you referenced, part # PW2029C, do not fit your tire size. The two linked articles on snow chains will provide you with some useful...

  • Using Adjusters with Glacier Cable Chains on 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe
Using the rubber adjusters with the # PW2029C Glacier Cable Snow Chains on your Santa Fe is not absolutely necessary, but I would highly recommend it. The adjusters will keep your chains in place and properly tensioned. For an 18 inch rim, you would use part # PW99, which is designed for 16-20 inch rims. Before purchasing or installing tire chains, be sure to read your owners manual and abide by any prohibitions or restrictions mentioned there. I have linked you to some informational...

  • Why Does Ford Exclude Tire Chains for 275/65-18 Tires on a 2016 Ford F-150
When a vehicle manufacturer states that chains cannot be used it is generally because there is a potential clearance issue between the inner sidewalls and vehicle components. However, in some places chains or cables are required by law. Since a vehicle manufacturer or dealer cannot tell you to break the law you would have to use a traction device of some kind. Cables such as # PW2028C which fit your 275/65-18 tires usually require the least clearance. For them I also recommend using rubber...

  • Which Axle Do Tire Chains Install On a 2008 Toyota Highlander
Your 2008 Toyota Highlander would be front wheel drive so you would want to install the tire chains on the front wheels. For maximum braking and turning traction you would want to have chains on all 4 wheels, but if only using one set the front axle would be the correct route. You will want to check the owners manual of you vehicle to determine if there are any tire chain restrictions for your vehicle.

  • How Long Do Cable Style Tire Chains Last
Cable style tire chains such as # PW2029C are for infrequent use. With infrequent use and care they can last several years. They are not the best option for more frequent use or areas that get a lot of snow and ice. A lot of factors will affect the life of any chains including road conditions and vehicle weight so an exact life span is not calculable. If at all possible make sure the cables are rinsed off with fresh water and dry before storing them. If you can tell me the tire size...

  • Tire Chains Recommended for 235/60-18 Tires on 2022 Honda CR-V
According to the owner's manual for your 2022 Honda CR-V, due to the limited clearance between the inner tire sidewall and the braking and suspension components, only cable style chains are recommended for your vehicle. The cables should be mounted on the front wheels only. To keep the maximum about of contact between the road and the cable chains, I'd recommend using Diagonal Allow Cable Snow Chains, part # TC729DC. The chains also include the rubber adjusters to keep the cable chains...

  • Tire Snow Chain Recommendations for 2011 BMW X5
Usually, when a vehicle manufacturer recommends against using tire chains, it's because there's limited clearance between the inside sidewall of the tire and the suspension/braking components of the vehicle. A chain that extends too far to the inside of the tire could cause severe damage to the vehicle. I cannot recommend you do anything that would contradict BMW's advice regarding tire chain usage, that's a decision you'd need to make on your own. If you need to travel to areas where...

  • Recommendation on Tire Cable Chains for a 2016 Acura MDX with 245/55-R19 Tire Size
When deciding if to use tire cables or chains you must consult the owner's manual of your vehicle for any restrictions or limitations. Some manufacturers will outright state that the use of cables or chains my cause damage that could void your vehicle's warranty. Although a manufacturer might discourage the use of chains, you need to follow the chain laws of the state you will be traveling through during winter conditions. If you decide to use chains or cables, the Glacier Cable Snow Tire...

  • Will Running Snow Chains On The Front Wheels Of A 2012 Toyota Highlander Damage The Vehicle?
Using only one set of chains on your 2012 Toyota Highlander will not hurt the engine. Typically just one set is used as you really only need chains on the drive wheels. If your Highlander is a front wheel drive model, this is where they should be used. However, if you have an all wheel drive model, we do recommend using the chains on the rear wheels. This is due to chains not lasting as long when they are on front wheels as turning will add some stress on them and wear them out quicker. With...
