Question:
hi there - so BMW say they dont recommend chains for our size of tyre very helpful!, but the ones they do recommend for the x5 and x6 are to be put on the back. However, some shops have recommended that we should put it on the front as it is a 4wd. and then i have seen that the perfect solution is on all tyres. Would you mind advising if we should do front or back for our model. The tyre dimensions are below. front dimensions: 275/40R/20 back dimensions: 315/35R/20 cheers

Usually, when a vehicle manufacturer recommends against using tire chains, it's because there's limited clearance between the inside sidewall of the tire and the suspension/braking components of the vehicle. A chain that extends too far to the inside of the tire could cause severe damage to the vehicle.
I cannot recommend you do anything that would contradict BMW's advice regarding tire chain usage, that's a decision you'd need to make on your own. If you need to travel to areas where being equipped with tire chains is mandatory, I'd recommend using the Thule K-Summit Chains, part # TH02230K66. These chains mount to the tread of the tire and the front of the wheel only, so there's no need to worry about interference between the chain and anything to the inside of the tire.
Since BMW recommends installing the chains on the rear wheels only, that's what I'd recommend you do.
I've linked you to some FAQ articles and an install video showing the chains being installed on an older X5 model.
