Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The pewag Snox Pro chains are great winter weather chains if you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice. They're durable, give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

With these chains, installation is a snap. There's no need to crawl around on the ground to make connections - just tug the chains around your tire to get them into place, and then drive off. The Snox will self-tension while you're driving to tighten perfectly around your tires. Once you stop driving, the tensioners release, making these chains equally simple and quick to pull off when you reach dry pavement.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installation of pewag Snox Pro Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains

Grasp both ends of the red cord and pull outward to activate the self-tensioning system

1. Grasp the red cord on each side of the self-tensioning device and pull outward to activate.

Place the red self-tensioning system at the back of the tire and drape the chain along the face of the wheel to position the red bungee at the bottom of the tire

2. Position the red cord over your tire, pulling it to the back. Then tug the cord down to fit it around the bottom of the tire.

3. Drive forward 1/4 of a tire revolution, keeping your wheels straight.

Once the bungee has been placed completely around the tire, pull on your assembly to make sure the chains are snug

4. Pull the rest of the chain around your tire so that the cross chains are positioned on top of the tire tread.

5. Once the chains are properly positioned, drive forward. The Snox Pro chains will automatically tighten and center themselves as you drive. No manual adjustment is necessary.

Tensioners automatically disengage

The tensioners automatically disengage when your car comes to a stop. To remove the chains, you can simply pull them off, or you can press the quick-release latch, which provides more slack in the chains to allow even faster removal.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

These chains are amazing to say the least. 2012 GMC Terrain never needed to put chains on it, but we decided to take it on a snow trip. I have used chains in the past on other vehicles and all have been so hard to put on, on so many different levels. It made me hate to have to use them. Now the Pewag Snox Pro are the best chains I have ever used. WOW!!! They were on in less than 5-10 minutes and then taking them off was even easier. One snap of the lock, a few rough tugs, and pulled forward. Shook them of and packed them back up in the awesome case. Smooth ride considering I had chains on and great traction on snow and ice! I did not know I could love chains so much!

by:

Clever design and great instructions. I did a test mount. Have not yet used in snow.

by:
2012 Toyota RAV4

I got to test them out for the first time after 4 inches of snow going up a long, steep gravel road full of switchbacks and ice patches in Blue Ridge Mountains. They performed wonderfully and were pretty easy to put on. My only concern are the blue plastic parts that could be a weak point.

by:

You never need the snow chains until you really need them. I had to use these twice. Both times they were super easy to install.

by:
Chevrolet Tahoe

I was concerned about using chains not prescribed by Volvo when I read forums about what chains to use. I purchased these with the hope that I would not have to find out if they were the right chains.

It snowed heavily in Tahoe and I had to use them on my AWD XC70. They were perfect. The chains did not cause a problem with the lack of clearance in the front wheel well.

Putting them on took some strength to stretch the bungee around the tire. Taking them off was completely easy.

I would recommend these. The price is high, but worth it for the peace of mind that I won't damage my car's front steering or suspension.

by:

I bought these for my girlfriend. She is not quite strong enough to put them on to well. They are very easy to get off. I recommend these for "stronger" people because of the bungy cord backing. They work very well.

by:
2015 Ford Transit T150

Three stars only because I need snow to evaluate their performance. The chains apear to be of very high quality materials again how they hold up to use will be determined this winter. The purchase experience with etrailer was very good five stars for the whole experience.

by:

I only used them once since there was too much snow lately but was easy to put on tires and worked great. Thanks

by:

Outstanding customer service, fast response, great advice, fast shipping too!

Fit snugly. Will be a little difficult in the snow but with a pair of gloves on it is doable. The red plastic rim protectors would protect rim from metal on metal contact. However, with my M-sport rims and Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires, the red plastic doesn't even come into contact with the rim due to the extended lip of the tire...but this does mean that the chain touches the outside surface of the tire--see pics. A little off putting scarring the sticky looking surface of the tire...but it is inevitable.

On the inside of the wheel/tire, my concern was contact with the knuckle, strut, end link, stabilizer, etc. It does get close to the stabilizer end link, but doesn't touch...my pictures are shown before self centering while driving...so the spacing to end link would only get greater as I installed in worst case scenario to compare.

by:

Excellent install instructions. For tire chains, easy to install, use, remove, store.

by:

Only had to use the tire chains once last winter for a short distance over the coast range in Oregon, which I think is a success. The chains appear to be well made, are easy to install and they performed well. I would buy them again.

by:

I drive a 1996 Corvette and have for the past 20 years - year round. And that makes driving near impossible in Connecticut winters and hilly terrains. Until I got my Pewag chains. When the snow accumulates, on go my Pewags and away I go. Snow covered roads, no problem, up and down hills, no problem. I can put my Pewags on both tires in less than ten minutes and I am good to go. Great product! I highly recommend Pewag chains.

by:

The 2nd time I used the chains, the tensioner on one chain would not release, so I could not flip the chains off, and I had to pay a roadside chain removal guy to cut them off. The 90-day warranty seems unreasonable for the price of these chains. I'm not going to buy Pewag chains to replace them.

by:

Worked great last year from mammoth California to Utah can’t wait to put them on again this year really easy to install.

by:

This is a gift, so I have no way of knowing yet if the chains are a great product. I am however quite pleased with the quick arrival and customer service. Thank you!

by:

I purchased this tire chains for my 2020 Mazda 3 Premium Hatchback. This was my first time ever driving in the snow. The chains was easy to put on and when driving it handles the snow pretty well! I struggled for a bit to bit it on because it was pouring snow and my hands was freezing. The product is a 9/10 overall! it damage one of my wheel (baby scratches) didn't bother me at all.

by:

Purchased these chains for a trip to the snow and for future use after buying a new vehicle. The chains were received promptly in a well designed carrying case, with a mat, gloves, and instructions for mounting the chains. I haven't had to use them = a Subaru Forester is a great AWD vehicle and handled some pretty dicey conditions with no issue - but carry them and feel confident I can mount and dismount them quickly. Instructions are clear and simple to follow.

by:

I ordered the SXP560 chains but received the SXP570 chains which are not for the size tires I have. I called customer service and they said they would resend the correct size and also send a mailing label to return the incorrect ones which would take about 1 hour to receive. However it's been about 12 hours and I still haven't received the return label. Note: If I receive the proper chains I will submit a new review.

by:

I can tell by looking at these Pewag tire chains that they are very high quality. Excellent craftsmanship! I haven't used them yet because it hasn't snowed but I rest assured knowing I have some of the best made tire chains out there.

by:

Product boasts being perfectly easy to pop on and roll away but the bungie is rather stiff and somewhat difficult to pull to the back of your tires. Once you DO get the red cable to the back, you need to perfectly align the chains to the top surface (treads) of your tire; otherwise, the bungie will pull and tear, ultimately breaking the chains inside of them.

That said, I do still recommend this product - when properly installed, they are very sturdy and get me out of my steep driveway like a champ. I also highly recommend etrailer (their customer service is awesome and they are very understanding when it comes to product flaws or user errors).

by:

This review is based on a one time use, (a three days of heavy snow in the mountains actually). These chains were a little difficult to install on my first test, but only took a few minutes on a dry sunny day before heading to the mountains. When the environment turned wet and cold, my hands took a biting even with heavy duty globes, I struggle a lot, but I managed to install the first one in 10 minutes and the second wheel in about 15 or more minutes. Once in placed they worked very good and had excellent traction and turning capabilities. These chains seem to be made of a high quality built and tough materials and hopefully will last a long time. The shipping was fast and product arrived in good condition.

by:

By design the installation and removal of this set of chains was quick and easy not to mention the great handling on the 2inches of compacted snow. They performed well on the ice as well once we were at a lower elevation level coming out of Mammoth.

  • Tire Chains for Trip to the Mountains in 2008 4WD Honda Pilot
In your owner's manual in the 'tire' section, Honda states that only Class S cable-style tire chains should be used on your Pilot.
